Rose Gold Diamond in University Place

5 Tips on What To Look For When Buying Diamonds For Wedding Rings

A wedding, or an engagement in  University Place, is one of the most important events in every couple’s life. One of the best ways of making the experience memorable is by choosing the right ring to symbolize the love you have for one another. While most couples would like to get the most beautiful ring they can lay their hands on, budgetary restrictions can be a challenge. However, it is possible to find an ideal ring based on your budget.

For anyone looking for precious diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings in University Place, they should consider going about the process carefully. There are various dealers in the market, some of who may sell you fake diamonds. Here are a few useful tips on what to look for when looking for precious diamonds for engagement or wedding rings.

Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in University Place. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in University Place to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in University Place for you engagement or wedding.

University Place How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all vendors supply ruby grading lab reports (aka diamond top quality reports) to their customers. So my general suggestions to you is to keep your money in your pocket when dealing with such jewelers.

Only buy a ruby engagement ring if it has the original ruby top quality report.

A laboratory record is an independent analysis of the 4Cs of a loose diamond and consists of a plotted representation of the rock's clarity features and a visuals representation of the stone's proportions. Having such a record allows you to compare diamonds of various qualities and also eventually helps you make a more educated purchasing choice.

A merchant may cut edges as well as not provide a lab report or an unscrupulous vendor could supply a fake one due to the time, trouble and expense he'll birth to obtaining a rock rated.

Yeah - there is a price for grading a diamond (though that price is eventually paid by the customer), plus the shipping as well as insurance costs for sending the diamond to the lab. And allow us not forget the opportunity price of a jewelry expert not having the diamond in his shop to buy for a couple of weeks while the grading takes place.

Nonetheless, a diamond rating report may additionally not be readily available due to the fact that the costs to obtaining one could affect too heavily on the final cost of the ring. For example, a 0.3 ct ruby ring setting you back $250 claim, might cost around $75 to be graded and have the record number engraved on the girdle on the ruby. As you search for that ideal ruby engagement ring for your sweetie, you'll locate that there is a hodgepodge of labs claiming to supply trusted diamond rating reports. But I would just place my cash on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Lab Information

Yes, all diamond quality reports are not created equivalent. Within the sector, it is an agreement that both premier laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Treasure Profession Laboratory) and the AGS (American Treasure Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Accreditation as well as Assurance Laboratory) also uses highly related to records or "ruby certificates" as they are referred to by GCAL. The GIA has the toughest worldwide reputation for self-reliance as well as uniformity. Because of their consistent color and clearness strictness standards, the world's largest and also most costly diamonds have actually been sent out there for rating decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL added a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded great rubies.

AGS makes use of the most strict cut standards in the sector. It uses a three-dimensional light performance metric that could quality a number of ruby forms. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is identified by the scientific community.

Just what is even more, its Diamond Top quality File makes use of a special and also proprietary 0 to 10 grading system to assess the 4 Cs - a system which is much easier to comprehend compared to GIA's grading system. Actually, AGS even goes the extra step by relating their 0-10 ranking range to various other kinds of ranking. For instance, the traditional VS1 diamond quality ranking is a 3 on the AGS Diamond Top Quality Document.

Diamond Reporting - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standard or regulated as well as therefore you may discover rate 2 labs that utilize looser standards to the rate 1 grading labs discussed over. If you purchase a ruby that has been graded by a tier 2 lab, you might finish up paying a lot more for a minimal top quality diamond. So for instance, a ruby ranked a "F" in color at a tier 2 lab may obtain a G, H, or lower color score at a much more respectable laboratory. The sector likewise marks down rubies graded by lower known labs by regarding 15-30% or even more. So either you only purchase a diamond graded by a tier 1 laboratory or you approve that you may be buying a lesser top quality diamond compared to just what is stated on the report if that diamond is rated by a lesser well-known laboratory.

2. Lots of big store have massive contracts with lesser well-known laboratories with "softer" diamond grading guidelines. Some of these softer labs put "suggested replacement worths" on the laboratory records - worths which are greater than what stores means sell the diamonds for. So a sales representative in a store could state to you, "Take a look at the lot you are getting here. We are offering you this ruby involvement ring for $2500 but the report claims that the recommended replacement worth is $4000." Wow - just what a bargain - NOT! This is why it is much better that you rely on just independent rate 1 labs.

Likewise remember that reputable ruby rating records are not appraisals as well as don't provide assessment figures. Ruby appraisals are commonly grossly inflated and are not something you'll intend to count on.

3. Diamond records are filled with please notes that specify that absolutely nothing is "certified" or ensured as well as that the laboratories are not accountable for mistakes. Actually, the GIA uses a please note of sorts on their website regarding making use of words "license." The site claims:

"It is incorrect to state that students, graduates, their businesses, or certain gems are "licensed" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of America does not certify any individual or anything. Neither a pupil neither a graduate that has been granted a certification or diploma, neither a treasure which has been graded or determined by GIA has actually been licensed by GIA".

So it is feasible that you the consumer is left holding the bag must an inaccuracy in a record is later on found. Courts have often ruled that sellers, not laboratories, are accountable for such errors. Why? Since the laboratories suggested ahead of time that their reports could not be held accountable.

Fortunately, there are a pair ways to offer on your own much more purchaser defense:

A. You could fly to India where jewelry experts use a lifetime buyback policy to their consumers. Too expensive to fly?

B. You can locate among the 20% people jewelry experts that offer totally bound rubies. These are rubies that are offered with lifetime breakage, lifetime trade-in and lifetime buyback plans.

C. Not as excellent a solution as buying a totally adhered diamond however you might buy a ruby that has a real "certification" and not a record. "Qualified rubies do include guaranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Certification Some sellers describe a "ruby record" as a "licensed diamond" yet practically this is not deal with. From a lawful standpoint, a diamond report is a merely an experienced point of view though in reality, aspects of a diamond grading report are not simply viewpoints.

For instance, a diamond's carat (weight) could be accurately established in addition to its cut quality by gauging its optical efficiency or by referring to a computer version. A certification on the various other hand is a declaration of reality - a document for which the provider accepts lawful duty and will certainly make restitution to the customer for errors.

Some leading ruby grading labs provide both reports and also certificates. AGS uses Ruby Top quality Papers (non-certified records) as well as Diamond Top quality Certificates. Ruby Quality Certificates are prepared exclusively for AGS retail jewelry experts as well as supplies guaranties from taking part American Gem Culture member shops.

GCAL certifies it's diamond grading also. Its 100% money-back guarantee plan is valid for a period of 2 years from the date on the relevant certificate. This policy makes sure the accuracy of the cut, color and quality grades and also the carat weight.

A record or certificate must will have a number on it that may or could not be etched on a ruby. You will be able to go into that number on the web site of the accrediting laboratory to examine a record's credibility.

Elements Of A Ruby Grading Report Ruby grading records are always advancing yet certain component must stay the exact same. As an example, the:

The Record #. This number is given and videotaped in a lab's record and also could or could not be engraved on a ruby's band. You could go into the report number on a rating laboratory's website to inspect the credibility of the ruby high quality report or to obtain even more info regarding the ruby. Forming & Aspect Style: This is the overview and the cutting design utilized for the facet plan. There are 3 basic aspect styles - "great cut, step cut and also mixed cutting design" as well as 12 basic shapes which include notables such as round fantastic and also princess cut" rubies.

Dimensions: This refers to size (not weight) of a diamond. Dimension includes measurements such as size, width, weight as well as size. A dimension is generally provided to the hundredth of a millimeter. Measurements play a big function in exactly how a diamond shines.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is determined to the hundredth of a carat weight as well as some even supply such step to the thousandth of a carat (1.123 ct.). Carat is the most unbiased as well as the easiest to comprehend of the 4Cs since all one has to do is weight the rock. Color Quality: This tells you the level of shade lack in the diamond. The less color the greater the quality.

Rubies are normally rated from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the diamond. You ought to never ever see ruby shade array such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so forth) on a ruby record. You should only see shade varieties on assessments for stones that are installed.

Clarity Grade: Basically every diamond has inner imperfections called incorporations and also outside imperfections called acnes. A ruby is graded according to the dimension, kind, place and also quantity of these flaws.

Clarity qualities range from Remarkable (FL) - Included. Labs make use of a pair professionals to quality the clearness of a ruby in order to think of a much more precise reading.

Cut Quality: Extra recent ruby reports consist of a cut grade for typical round fantastic rubies. Cut considers the luster, fire as well as scintillation of the diamond. Cut grade ranges from Outstanding - Poor.

Other elements you may encounter on a diamond record consist of the polish, symmetry, fluorescence and also proportion. Equipped with this info, you are much better able to make an evaluation of the quality of diamond that is mounted in an interaction ring.

Phony Or Real Diamond And Is This Right For You

Rubies are naturally readily available in an extremely vast array of colors. The majority of people find out about colorless rubies as well as GIA's color grading system that is utilized to identify a diamond's body shade ... you recognize D, E, F, and so on. This shade grading system is just utilized to categorize the most common ruby body color of yellow nevertheless anytime a ruby is discovered in another color like pink, blue, eco-friendly, etc.; then this ruby is referred to as a "" fancy ruby"".

Natural Fancy rubies could be extremely expensive as well as lots of times more costly compared to a similar dimension anemic ruby. A really good example of a Fancy ruby is the notorious 45.52 carat weight expensive deep blue diamond, the Hope Diamond, which gets on screen in the Smithsonian Nature Gallery in Washington, DC.

A shade enhanced diamond is a 100% natural diamond that has had its color changed. And most importantly, color enhanced rubies been available in a very broad choice of colors at extremely economical costs!

A little bit of history- For many, years it has actually been popular that a diamond's color might be "" boosted"" by placing a little bit of colored material on the surface area of a diamond and also similar to magic ... a ruby that had a recognizable yellowish shade would alter to a much more eye-catching near anemic diamond. Unfortunately, this kind of shade improved ruby can change back to its original body shade if this tinted material was inadvertently gotten rid of. In more current years, the modern technology of color improved diamonds has actually gone extremely advanced. It is currently possible to entirely alter the color of a ruby! These procedures are taken into consideration permanent since it does stay stable when subjected to everyday normal conditions. The color will not discolor if exposed to sunshine or be cleaned off by extreme chemicals.

Just how is it done? The preferred outcome of any of these treatments is to have a more marketable diamond. A less marketable ruby would be a ruby that has a reduced body color or in some cases a reduced clarity. The shade improved ruby treatment business know if they start with a particular sort of diamond and also procedure it for a certain amount of time that they should wind up with a certain shade yet it does not always work this way. This is a scientific research that does need some art in their procedures ... the only process that provides consistent results is the covering procedure.

The 3 processes are as follows- Refine # 1- HPHT Shade Boosted Diamonds- High Stress/ Heat (HPHT) treatment could boost the color of particular kinds of brown rubies and also therefore increase their value. General Electric has actually developed a procedure that virtually is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's creation in nature. The color improved ruby will certainly be warmed up to an extremely heat under a very high, stabilized stress. Mistakes in the crystal framework are after that repositioned leading to an alteration of the ruby's color. Due to the fact that the problems of HPHT are extremely much like ruby's original development, just a well geared up laboratory will certainly be able to positively identify this kind of shade boosted diamond. HPHT wased initially used to transform yellowish rubies into more valuable fancy tinted improved diamonds, and now it is also used to change some out of favor brown rubies right into preferred colorless colored improved rubies.

Refine # 2- Irradiated Color Boosted Diamonds- OK ... do not start obtaining all thrilled since you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% safe process that is extremely similar to what is utilized to maintain food by subjecting it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color enhanced diamond procedure is carried out in several various ways however the outcomes are just the same. You begin with a reduced shade (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% natural ruby that has actually already been reduced and brightened, after that it is exposed to a stream of quick electrons. During this component of the procedure the ruby will count on a very dark color because some of the atoms in the ruby's crystal framework have currently been dislocated as well as this then has actually affected the means light go through the diamond. Next the ruby experiences a controlled home heating (annealing) process, this allows a few of those atoms to move (partly fixed) in order to obtain a preferred color.

Refine # 3- Covered Shade Boosted Diamonds- The finish on sleek rubies describes a thin artificial layer that modifies the color of the ruby. The covering can either be of the preferred shade or could create a colored interference-effect. Unfortunately sometimes this procedure is done to deceive a buyer. It is a reasonably easy process to perform, it has actually been around for years (although the coatings materials are better now), as well as it does not need a great deal of expensive advanced tools. Lately, I have actually seen some pink layered rubies on the marketplace, they are very eye-catching ... and obviously you would certainly have to buy them knowing that they have actually been coated and also follow your jeweler's guidelines concerning possessing and caring for these shade enhanced rubies. The finish can be put on the whole of a ruby's surface, just all-time low of the ruby, or to a narrow area near the girdle. A well-applied coating can alter the color by several color grade. Some finishes could be eliminated via steaming in acid, strong cleaning remedies, and even home chemicals. Occasionally dots or larger areas of purple or blue ink are paintinged on the diamond to assist combat a yellow-colored shade. The ruby's setup will normally cover the dots, so they are challenging to see in an installed stone.

So, is a color enhanced ruby right for you? Possibly ... natural fancy shade diamonds can be attractive however they are expensive! Shade improved diamonds are inexpensive and also permit many individuals to have a vibrantly tinted ruby. Ask your regional jewelry expert if they have any type of Fancy diamonds ... either all-natural or color boosted rubies. It is always intriguing, as well as fun, to check out something different!

Under normal wear the irradiated as well as HPHT color boosted diamonds will certainly have not a problem of the color fading away. The only factor to consider will be when you have to have any sort of service done on the piece of jewelry. If this type of shade boosted diamond is exposed to extreme quantities of warm it might influence the color. The jewelry expert will certainly should understand that the diamond is a shade improved ruby prior to any kind of work is done then the jewelry expert will have the ability to select the most effective strategy. Shade improved diamonds are currently likewise utilized as the tiny accent rubies around a larger anemic diamond. There are numerous amazing items of precious jewelry available with tiny blue, yellow, black, or green shade enhanced diamonds.

Since you understand about shade boosted rubies and also a person aims to offer you on just what they call an all-natural fancy tinted diamond but it is at an incredibly bargain cost ... you will know that something simply does not seem best concerning the offer. A record from a revered grading lab need to go along with natural Fancy tinted diamonds that are marketed as all-natural. If you handle a reliable business and also you have actually been reassured about exactly what you are buying, after that you will reduce the opportunity of something negative taking place to you. Similar to any kind of situation involving a costly purchase of something that few individuals are well versed in, education ought to be a crucial part of your strategy. This is much more important if you plan to acquire a color enhanced diamond. Bud Boland has remained in the precious jewelry business for 40 years and has done whatever from watchmaking, diamond setup, jewelry making, and also has been a Jeweler for almost 35 years. He is a Graduate Gemologist from GIA (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.), which is additionally the place where he was a Trainer.

Rubies are naturally readily available in an extremely wide variety of shades. Lots of people recognize regarding anemic rubies and GIA's color grading system that is utilized to classify a diamond's body color ... you know D, E, F, etc. This color grading system is only utilized to identify the most typical ruby body color of yellow however anytime a ruby is located in another shade like pink, blue, environment-friendly, and so on; then this ruby is described as a "" fancy ruby"".

Natural Fancy diamonds can be very expensive and also sometimes much more costly compared to a similar size anemic diamond. An extremely excellent instance of a Fancy ruby is the notorious 45.52 carat weight fancy deep blue diamond, the Hope Diamond, which is on screen in the Smithsonian Nature Museum in Washington, DC.

A shade boosted ruby is a 100% natural ruby that has actually had its shade transformed. And also most importantly, shade enhanced rubies come in a very wide choice of shades at very cost effective prices!

A little history- For lots of, years it has been popular that a diamond's color can be "" boosted"" by placing a bit of colored material on the surface of a diamond and similar to magic ... a ruby that had a visible yellow-colored color would certainly transform to a more attractive near colorless ruby. Unfortunately, this sort of color enhanced diamond might alter back to its original body shade if this colored material was inadvertently removed. In more current years, the innovation of shade improved rubies has gone very advanced. It is currently feasible to entirely alter the color of a diamond! These processes are considered permanent due to the fact that it does stay stable when exposed to everyday normal conditions. The shade will certainly not fade if subjected to sunshine or be cleaned off by rough chemicals.

How is it done? The preferred outcome of any one of these treatments is to have an extra marketable ruby. A much less marketable ruby would certainly be a ruby that has a reduced body shade or sometimes a lower quality. The shade boosted ruby treatment companies recognize if they start with a specific sort of ruby and also process it for a specific quantity of time that they should wind up with a particular shade however it does not constantly function by doing this. This is a science that does require some art in their procedures ... the only process that gives regular outcomes is the layer process.

The 3 procedures are as complies with- Refine # 1- HPHT Color Boosted Diamonds- High Pressure/ High Temperature Level (HPHT) therapy could boost the color of certain kinds of brown rubies and therefore increase their worth. General Electric has actually developed a process that quite a lot is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's production in nature. The color improved diamond will be warmed up to a really heat under an extremely high, maintained pressure. Mistakes in the crystal framework are then repositioned causing an alteration of the ruby's shade. Because the conditions of HPHT are very much like diamond's initial formation, only a well furnished laboratory will be able to favorably recognize this kind of shade boosted diamond. HPHT wased initially made use of to turn yellowish rubies right into even more marketable fancy tinted boosted rubies, and now it is additionally made use of to change some unpopular brown diamonds right into more preferable colorless tinted enhanced rubies.

Refine # 2- Irradiated Color Boosted Diamonds- OK ... do not begin obtaining all excited since you saw words irradiated! This is a 100% secure procedure that is really just like what is utilized to maintain food by subjecting it to a stream of Gamma rays. The shade enhanced ruby procedure is carried out in several various means but the results are just the same. You begin with a low color (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% natural diamond that has already been cut and also polished, then it is subjected to a stream of fast electrons. During this component of the procedure the diamond will rely on an extremely dark shade due to the fact that a few of the atoms in the ruby's crystal structure have currently been disjointed and also this subsequently has impacted the means light travel through the ruby. Next the diamond experiences a controlled home heating (annealing) process, this enables a few of those atoms to move (partially fixed) in order to acquire a desired shade.

Process # 3- Layered Color Boosted Diamonds- The layer on refined diamonds describes a thin synthetic layer that modifies the shade of the ruby. The finishing could either be of the wanted shade or can trigger a tinted interference-effect. Regrettably often this procedure is done to deceive a purchaser. It is a fairly simple process to do, it has actually been around for several years (although the layers materials are a lot better currently), and it does not require a whole lot of pricey high tech devices. Recently, I've seen some pink covered diamonds on the market, they are very attractive ... and also naturally you would have to buy them knowing that they have been covered and also follow your jeweler's guidelines regarding having and looking after these shade boosted rubies. The covering can be related to the whole of a diamond's surface, simply the bottom of the diamond, or to a slim zone near the girdle. A well-applied layer could change the color by several shade grade. Some coatings can be removed via steaming in acid, strong cleaning services, or perhaps household chemicals. In some cases dots or larger locations of purple or blue ink are repainted on the ruby to aid combat a yellowish color. The ruby's setting will normally cover the dots, so they are tough to see in a mounted stone.

So, is a shade improved diamond right for you? Perhaps ... natural elegant shade diamonds could be stunning however they are expensive! Shade improved rubies are inexpensive and allow lots of people to possess a vibrantly tinted ruby. Ask your local jewelry expert if they have any kind of Fancy rubies ... either all-natural or color boosted rubies. It is constantly intriguing, and also enjoyable, to check out something various!

Under typical wear the irradiated and HPHT color enhanced diamonds will certainly have no troubles of the shade fading away. The only consideration will be when you should have any type of type of solution done on the item of precious jewelry. If this sort of shade boosted ruby is revealed to too much amounts of warmth it could affect the shade. The jeweler will certainly have to know that the diamond is a color boosted diamond prior to any type of work is done and afterwards the jeweler will be able to choose the very best strategy. Color enhanced rubies are currently also made use of as the small accent diamonds around a larger anemic diamond. There are many interesting pieces of precious jewelry offered with little blue, yellow, black, or environment-friendly shade enhanced rubies.

Now that you learn about shade enhanced rubies as well as somebody aims to sell you on just what they call an all-natural expensive colored ruby but it is at a super deal price ... you will know that something just does not appear best about the deal. A record from a reputable grading lab must accompany natural Fancy colored rubies that are marketed as all-natural. If you deal with a reputable firm and you have actually been reassured concerning what you are purchasing, then you will minimize the opportunity of something poor taking place to you. As with any type of situation entailing a costly acquisition of something that few individuals are experienceded in, education and learning should be an important part of your strategy. This is also more crucial if you intend to buy a shade enhanced diamond. Bud Boland has been in the precious jewelry service for 40 years and also has actually done every little thing from watchmaking, diamond setting, precious jewelry making, and also has been a Gemologist for virtually 35 years. He is a Grad Gemologist from GIA (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.), which is also the area where he was a Trainer. He has instructed concerning rubies to thousands of trainees from around the globe

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
