Rubies are produced 90 miles under the Earth's surface at temperatures of about 2200 levels Fahrenheit. Rubies are developed deep within the planet as well as eventually, over exceptionally long durations of time, press their method to the planet's surface, usually via volcanic eruptions.

The age of these diamonds from underneath the surface of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years of ages! Artificial diamonds are otherwise recognized as High Stress High Temperature Level (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) diamonds. The name of both these artificial diamonds originates from the processes utilized to develop them. Some of these artificial diamonds could either have better, minimal or comparable characteristics compared to that of a ruby. As a result, these synthetic diamonds are used for abrasives, reducing and polishing devices, as well as changes in power plant.

* Simulants

This color grading system is only used to identify the most typical ruby body shade of yellow nonetheless anytime a ruby is found in an additional color like pink, blue, green, etc.; then this diamond is referred to as a "" fancy diamond"".

All-natural Fancy rubies can be very pricey and sometimes extra expensive than a similar dimension anemic ruby. A great instance of a Fancy diamond is the infamous 45.52 carat weight elegant deep blue ruby, the Hope Diamond, which is on screen in the Smithsonian Nature Museum in Washington, DC.

A color boosted ruby is a 100% natural diamond that has had its shade altered. And also ideal of all, color enhanced diamonds been available in a really broad option of colors at really budget-friendly costs!

A little bit of background- For several, years it has been well known that a diamond's color could be "" boosted"" by placing a little bit of tinted substance on the surface of a diamond and also similar to magic ... a diamond that had a visible yellowish color would alter to an extra attractive near anemic diamond. Unfortunately, this sort of shade boosted diamond could alter back to its original body shade if this colored material was unintentionally gotten rid of. In more current years, the technology of color enhanced diamonds has actually gone very high technology. It is now feasible to totally alter the shade of a diamond! These procedures are taken into consideration long-term due to the fact that it does continue to be steady when exposed to day-to-day typical problems. The color will not discolor if revealed to sunlight or be washed off by harsh chemicals.

Exactly how is it done? The desired result of any one of these treatments is to have an extra marketable diamond. A much less marketable ruby would be a diamond that has a low body shade or occasionally a reduced clearness. The shade boosted diamond treatment business know if they start with a particular type of ruby and also procedure it for a particular quantity of time that they must wind up with a specific shade but it does not always work by doing this. This is a science that does require some art in their processes ... the only procedure that gives regular outcomes is the finishing process.

The three processes are as adheres to- Refine # 1- HPHT Color Improved Diamonds- High Pressure/ High Temperature Level (HPHT) treatment could boost the color of certain kinds of brownish rubies as well as hence boost their value. General Electric has actually developed a process that basically is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's creation in nature. The shade improved diamond will be heated up to an extremely heat under a very high, maintained stress. Mistakes in the crystal structure are after that repositioned resulting in a change of the ruby's shade. Due to the fact that the problems of HPHT are very comparable to ruby's initial development, just a well equipped laboratory will certainly have the ability to favorably recognize this kind of color enhanced ruby. HPHT was first utilized to transform yellowish rubies into even more valuable fancy colored enhanced rubies, and now it is additionally made use of to change some out of favor brownish rubies right into preferred colorless colored improved rubies.

Process # 2- Irradiated Color Enhanced Diamonds- OK ... do not begin obtaining all thrilled because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% risk-free process that is really much like what is used to maintain food by subjecting it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color improved ruby process is performed in several different methods but the results are all the very same. You start with a reduced color (P, Q, R, and so on) 100% natural ruby that has actually currently been reduced as well as polished, after that it is exposed to a stream of fast electrons. Throughout this component of the process the ruby will rely on an extremely dark shade because some of the atoms in the ruby's crystal framework have now been dislocated as well as this in turn has actually affected the method light travel through the ruby. Next the ruby experiences a controlled home heating (annealing) procedure, this enables several of those atoms to relocate (partly fixed) in order to acquire a wanted shade.

Refine # 3- Coated Color Enhanced Diamonds- The covering on polished diamonds refers to a slim artificial layer that changes the color of the ruby. The layer could either be of the preferred shade or could cause a colored interference-effect. Unfortunately in some cases this process is done to deceive a purchaser. It is a fairly easy procedure to perform, it has been around for years (although the coatings products are better currently), and also it does not need a great deal of pricey high technology equipment. Just recently, I have actually seen some pink covered rubies on the market, they are very appealing ... as well as naturally you would certainly need to acquire them recognizing that they have been covered and follow your jewelry expert's guidelines concerning possessing and also looking after these color enhanced diamonds. The covering can be related to the entire of a ruby's surface, simply the bottom of the ruby, or to a slim zone near the band. A well-applied finishing can change the shade by several color grade. Some finishes could be removed through boiling in acid, strong cleaning services, or perhaps household chemicals. Occasionally dots or larger locations of purple or blue ink are repainted on the diamond in order to help combat a yellowish color. The ruby's setup will typically cover the dots, so they are difficult to see in a placed rock.

So, is a shade enhanced ruby right for you? Possibly ... all-natural elegant shade diamonds can be attractive but they are pricey! Shade boosted rubies are economical and also permit lots of people to possess a vibrantly tinted diamond. Ask your local jeweler if they have any Fancy diamonds ... either all-natural or shade enhanced rubies. It is always intriguing, and also enjoyable, to take a look at something various!

Under normal wear the irradiated and also HPHT color enhanced rubies will certainly have no worry of the color fading away. The only consideration will certainly be when you should have any type of sort of solution done on the piece of precious jewelry. If this type of shade boosted ruby is exposed to too much quantities of warmth it might affect the color. The jeweler will certainly should understand that the ruby is a shade enhanced diamond before any kind of work is done and after that the jewelry expert will certainly have the ability to pick the very best program of activity. Color boosted rubies are now also used as the little accent rubies around a bigger anemic diamond. There are lots of exciting items of precious jewelry available with tiny blue, yellow, black, or green shade enhanced diamonds.

Now that you understand about shade improved rubies and somebody tries to offer you on what they call a natural elegant colored diamond however it goes to an incredibly bargain price ... you will recognize that something just does not appear best concerning the deal. A record from a recognized grading lab must accompany 100% natural Fancy colored diamonds that are marketed as all-natural. If you handle a reputable firm as well as you have actually been assured concerning just what you are getting, after that you will lessen the opportunity of something negative occurring to you. Similar to any type of scenario entailing an expensive purchase of something that few individuals are experienceded in, education and learning must be a crucial part of your strategy. Yes, all ruby quality records are not developed equal. Within the industry, it is an agreement that both leading labs are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Gem Trade Lab) and also the AGS (American Treasure Culture Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Accreditation as well as Guarantee Laboratory) additionally offers extremely related to reports or "ruby certifications" as they are referred to by GCAL. The GIA has the best worldwide reputation for self-reliance and also consistency. Due to their continuous shade as well as clarity strictness standards, the world's largest as well as most expensive rubies have been sent there for grading years. In 2006, GIA-GTL added a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded great rubies.

AGS uses the most strict cut criteria in the industry. It utilizes a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that could quality numerous ruby shapes. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is acknowledged by the scientific neighborhood.

What is even more, its Diamond Top quality Record uses a distinct as well as proprietary 0 to 10 grading system to examine the 4 Cs - a system which is simpler to comprehend compared to GIA's grading system. In reality, AGS also goes the additional action by relating their 0-10 score range to other types of rating. As an example, the traditional VS1 diamond clarity rating is a 3 on the AGS Diamond Quality Document.

Ruby Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standard or regulated and therefore you could find rate 2 laboratories that employ looser standards to the rate 1 grading labs mentioned over. If you purchase a ruby that has actually been rated by a tier 2 lab, you may end up paying a lot more for a lower top quality diamond. So for example, a ruby rated a "F" in shade at a tier 2 lab could obtain a G, H, or lower color ranking at an extra reliable lab. The market also marks down diamonds graded by lower known laboratories by regarding 15-30% or more. So either you only get a ruby rated by a tier 1 lab or you approve that you could be buying a minimal top quality diamond compared to just what is mentioned on the report if that diamond is graded by a minimal well-known laboratory.

2. Lots of large chain shops have massive contracts with lower well-known laboratories with "softer" diamond grading standards. Several of these softer laboratories put "suggested replacement worths" on the laboratory reports - worths which are greater compared to what stores plans market the rubies for. So a sales representative in a store may say to you, "Take a look at the fantastic deal you are obtaining right here. We are offering you this diamond interaction ring for $2500 however the report claims that the recommended replacement worth is $4000." Wow - what an offer - NOT! This is why it is better that you rely on just independent tier 1 laboratories.

Likewise remember that reputable diamond grading records are not assessments and don't use assessment figures. Diamond evaluations are often blatantly inflated and also are not something you'll desire to depend on.

3. Ruby records are riddled with disclaimers that define that absolutely nothing is "accredited" or ensured which the laboratories are not responsible for mistakes. As a matter of fact, the GIA uses a please note of types on their internet site concerning making use of words "certify." The web site says:

"It is incorrect to state that trainees, grads, their businesses, or certain gems are "accredited" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not license anyone or anything. Neither a trainee neither a grad who has actually been awarded a certification or diploma, nor a treasure which has been graded or identified by GIA has actually been certified by GIA".

So it is feasible that you the consumer is left holding the bag ought to an error in a report is later on uncovered. Courts have often ruled that sellers, not labs, are in charge of such errors. Why? Due to the fact that the labs suggested beforehand that their records couldn't be held accountable.

Luckily, there are a couple means to give yourself more buyer protection:

A. You could fly to India where jewelers offer a life time buyback plan to their clients. As well expensive to fly?

B. You can find among the 20% people jewelry experts that offer fully bound diamonds. These are rubies that are marketed with lifetime breakage, lifetime trade-in and also lifetime buyback plans.

C. Not as great a remedy as purchasing a fully adhered ruby yet you might acquire a diamond that has a real "certificate" and not a record. "Qualified diamonds do come with guaranties" albeit for much shorter periods.

Qualification Some vendors refer to a "ruby record" as a "licensed ruby" but technically this is not remedy. From a legal perspective, a diamond record is a simply a skilled opinion though in actuality, aspects of a diamond grading record are not simply point of views.

For example, a ruby's carat weight (weight) could be precisely determined along with its cut quality by gauging its optical performance or by describing a computer version. A certificate on the other hand is a declaration of reality - a document for which the company accepts legal responsibility and will certainly make restitution to the customer for errors.

Some leading ruby grading laboratories provide both reports as well as certificates. AGS provides Ruby Top quality Papers (non-certified records) and Diamond Quality Certificates. Diamond Quality Certifications are ready solely for AGS retail jewelers as well as uses guaranties from getting involved American Gem Society member stores.

GCAL accredits it's ruby grading additionally. Its 100% money-back guarantee plan is valid for a period of two years from the date on the relevant certification. This plan makes certain the accuracy of the cut, shade and also clarity qualities and also the carat weight.

A report or certificate should will have a number on it that might or might not be engraved on a ruby. You will have the ability to go into that number on the internet site of the accrediting lab to check a report's legitimacy.

Elements Of A Diamond Grading Report Diamond grading records are always developing but specific element must stay the same. As an example, the:

The Record #. This number is provided as well as recorded in a laboratory's record and could or may not be engraved on a diamond's band. You could get in the record number on a grading laboratory's website to inspect the authenticity of the ruby top quality report or to obtain even more information concerning the diamond. Forming & Aspect Design: This is the overview and the reducing style utilized for the facet arrangement. There are 3 standard aspect designs - "brilliant cut, step cut and also mixed cutting design" and 12 basic shapes that include notables such as round dazzling and princess cut" rubies.

Dimensions: This refers to size (not weight) of a ruby. Dimension consists of dimensions such as length, width, weight and size. A dimension is commonly detailed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Dimensions play a big duty in how a diamond glows.

Carat Weight: The weight of a diamond is gauged to the hundredth of a carat weight and some also give such step to the thousandth of a carat (1.123 ct.). Carat is one of the most objective as well as the simplest to recognize of the 4Cs because all one has to do is weight the rock. Shade Grade: This tells you the degree of shade absence in the diamond. The much less shade the higher the quality.

Diamonds are typically graded from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You ought to never ever see ruby shade variety such as (G-H, I-J-K, and also so on) on a ruby report. You should just see color ranges on evaluations for stones that are installed.

Clarity Quality: Essentially every diamond has interior imperfections called incorporations and also outside imperfections called blemishes. A diamond is rated according to the size, kind, location and also amount of these defects.

Clearness grades vary from Perfect (FL) - Included. Labs make use of a couple professionals to quality the clearness of a diamond in order to create a much more precise reading.

Cut Quality: More current diamond reports include a cut grade for basic round dazzling rubies. Cut takes right into factor to consider the brilliance, fire as well as scintillation of the ruby. Cut grade ranges from Excellent - Poor.

Various other aspects you could come across on a diamond record include the polish, proportion, fluorescence and also proportion. Equipped with this details, you are much better able making an evaluation of the quality of ruby that is placed in an involvement ring.

University Place How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Just how are diamond cut grades appointed?

This is where points begin to get complicated. The methods made use of to quantitatively analyze the top quality of a cut vary. The means the GIA determines just what a ruby's cut quality should be, for instance, differs in very certain methods from the means various other certifiers like the AGS do it. In many cases, these organizations don't reveal the specific details of the procedures they make use of.

The form of a diamond additionally makes a distinction relative to how its cut grade is determined. Although there are some standard criteria that stay the exact same for any kind of type of diamond, the exact techniques made use of to grade a round diamond's cut are various from those utilized to quality a heart-shaped diamond's cut.

The rest of this explanation will certainly focus on round diamonds, as this is by far one of the most usual ruby shape. One of the elements influencing the cut quality of a round ruby is the variety of elements it has. Aspects are the level, defined locations externally of a ruby. The aspects on round rubies are typically triangular. Presently, it's thought that the suitable round ruby should have 33 aspects on the crown (the section of the ruby that rests over the girdle, which itself is the largest factor of the ruby) and 25 on the structure (the reduced, longer section of the ruby). When there are flaws on the surface of the diamond, cutters may add extra elements in order to obscure them. This leads to a destruction in the overall top quality of the cut.

While the aspect count is generally decideded upon as an excellent way of evaluating the high quality of a ruby cut, there are various other factors on which gemologists often disagree. Several of the various other aspects utilized by some authorities in order to help determine cut grades consist of the elevation of the ruby's crown, the depth of the structure, the size of the table (the top of the crown), and also the angles of the crown and pavilion.

The American Requirement standard for round diamonds requires a crown height of 16.2%, pavilion deepness of 43.1%, as well as table diameter of 53% of the complete girdle diameter. The Suitable Great benchmark, nonetheless, calls for 19.2% crown height, 40% structure deepness, and 56.5% table diameter. While these distinctions could be tough for beginners to discern, they are a good illustration of the problems related to developing a basic assessment of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some arguments about the specific percentages that constitute the excellent ruby cut, for potential ruby buyers, one of the most essential thing to recognize is that diamond certifications offered by companies like the AGS and also GIA are reliable and also significant. Reputable diamond vendors base the rates at which they deal diamonds on the cut along with the remainder of the "four Cs." When you purchase a ruby, you do not need to stress about the understanding of just what makes a good ruby cut altering a lot that the value of your diamond will certainly be substantially affected.

Which ruby cut grade stands for the most effective value?

Which kind of diamond is best for you greatly depends upon your spending plan. For buyers that want to purchase them, vendors typically recommend diamonds with the greatest feasible cut grades. However, this could result from some self-involvement on their component.

The other three Cs have an effect on ruby rates as well, so it can be tough to gauge the precise distinction in price between a Suitable or Exceptional cut diamond and a Really Good cut. For laid-back purchasers and budget-conscious financiers alike, rubies with an Excellent or Excellent cut quality can stand for a superb value. This is because, while they could be much more budget friendly than or else equivalent Suitable or Excellent cut diamonds, the noticeable distinction in quality is minimal.

At the same time, do not hesitate to use your discretion. If, for instance, you find a ruby with a Suitable cut ranking which has great rankings in the other groups as well as is still within your budget, then you must absolutely consider it, as long as you're dealing with a respectable supplier.

How Do You Know If The Ruby Is Phony Or Genuine Ruby?

University Place

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
