A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Dupont to show you the copy of diamond certification.

Grading Rough Diamonds!

Dupont

Rubies are naturally readily available in an extremely vast array of colors. Many people find out about anemic rubies and GIA's shade grading system that is made use of to categorize a diamond's body shade ... you understand D, E, F, etc. This shade grading system is only used to identify one of the most common ruby body shade of yellow however anytime a ruby is discovered in an additional color like pink, blue, eco-friendly, and so on; after that this diamond is described as a "" elegant ruby"".

All-natural Fancy diamonds can be extremely pricey as well as sometimes much more costly compared to a comparable size anemic diamond. A really great instance of a Fancy diamond is the notorious 45.52 carat expensive deep blue diamond, the Hope Diamond, which gets on display in the Smithsonian Natural Background Museum in Washington, DC.

A color enhanced diamond is a 100% all-natural ruby that has had its color changed. And also most importantly, shade enhanced diamonds come in a very large option of colors at very economical costs!

A little history- For several, many years it has actually been popular that a diamond's color might be "" improved"" by putting a little colored substance on the surface area of a diamond and similar to magic ... a ruby that had a visible yellow-colored color would certainly transform to a much more appealing near anemic diamond. Sadly, this sort of shade improved ruby might transform back to its initial body shade if this tinted compound was unintentionally gotten rid of. In even more current years, the innovation of shade boosted rubies has actually gone incredibly high technology. It is currently possible to totally transform the shade of a diamond! These processes are considered permanent due to the fact that it does continue to be stable when revealed to everyday regular problems. The color will certainly not discolor if subjected to sunlight or be washed off by extreme chemicals.

Just how is it done? The wanted end result of any one of these therapies is to have a more valuable diamond. A less valuable diamond would certainly be a diamond that has a low body shade or often a reduced clearness. The shade improved diamond therapy business recognize if they begin with a particular kind of ruby and also procedure it for a specific amount of time that they must end up with a specific shade yet it does not always work by doing this. This is a scientific research that does need some art in their processes ... the only process that offers regular outcomes is the finish procedure.

The three processes are as adheres to- Refine # 1- HPHT Shade Improved Diamonds- High Pressure/ Heat (HPHT) treatment can enhance the shade of particular sorts of brownish diamonds and also therefore increase their value. General Electric has actually established a procedure that virtually is a mechanical simulation of a diamond's creation in nature. The shade improved diamond will be warmed up to a really high temperature level under a really high, stabilized stress. Faults in the crystal framework are after that reorganized causing an alteration of the ruby's shade. Due to the fact that the problems of HPHT are very similar to ruby's initial formation, just a well geared up laboratory will certainly be able to positively recognize this kind of color improved ruby. HPHT wased initially used to transform yellow-colored rubies right into more valuable fancy colored boosted rubies, today it is additionally used to change some out of favor brown rubies into even more preferable anemic colored improved rubies.

Refine # 2- Irradiated Color Improved Diamonds- OK ... do not begin obtaining all excited because you saw words irradiated! This is a 100% safe process that is really just like what is used to preserve food by exposing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color improved ruby process is carried out in several different methods but the outcomes are just the same. You start with a low color (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% all-natural ruby that has actually currently been cut and also brightened, after that it is subjected to a stream of rapid electrons. Throughout this component of the process the diamond will turn to an extremely dark shade because several of the atoms in the ruby's crystal framework have now been dislocated as well as this consequently has affected the method light travel through the ruby. Next the diamond goes through a controlled heating (annealing) process, this enables some of those atoms to transfer (partially fixed) in order to get a desired shade.

Process # 3- Covered Shade Boosted Diamonds- The layer on sleek diamonds describes a slim fabricated layer that modifies the shade of the ruby. The coating could either be of the wanted shade or could create a tinted interference-effect. Unfortunately in some cases this procedure is done to trick a customer. It is a relatively very easy process to do, it has actually been around for years (although the finishings products are far better currently), as well as it does not call for a whole lot of expensive advanced tools. Just recently, I've seen some pink covered diamonds on the marketplace, they are very appealing ... as well as naturally you would certainly need to acquire them knowing that they have actually been covered as well as follow your jewelry expert's guidelines about owning and looking after these color enhanced rubies. The finish could be related to the entire of a ruby's surface area, just the bottom of the diamond, or to a slim area near the girdle. A well-applied coating can change the color by one or even more color quality. Some layers could be removed with steaming in acid, strong cleaning remedies, or even household chemicals. Often dots or bigger areas of purple or blue ink are repainted on the ruby in order to help counteract a yellow-colored color. The diamond's setting will generally cover the dots, so they are tough to see in an installed rock.

So, is a color improved ruby right for you? Possibly ... all-natural fancy color diamonds can be attractive however they are pricey! Shade enhanced rubies are cost effective as well as permit many individuals to possess a vibrantly tinted diamond. Ask your regional jewelry expert if they have any Fancy rubies ... either natural or shade improved rubies. It is constantly interesting, as well as enjoyable, to take a look at something various!

Under normal wear the irradiated as well as HPHT shade improved rubies will have no problems of the color fading away. The only consideration will certainly be when you should have any kind of kind of service done on the item of precious jewelry. If this kind of shade enhanced diamond is exposed to excessive amounts of warmth it may affect the shade. The jeweler will certainly should recognize that the ruby is a color enhanced ruby prior to any type of job is done and after that the jewelry expert will have the ability to choose on the ideal course of action. Color boosted diamonds are currently also used as the tiny accent diamonds around a bigger colorless diamond. There are many amazing items of fashion jewelry offered with small blue, yellow, black, or environment-friendly color enhanced rubies.

Now that you learn about color improved rubies and also somebody aims to market you on just what they call a natural expensive tinted diamond however it is at a super deal price ... you will certainly understand that something simply does not appear right regarding the deal. A record from a respected grading laboratory must come with all all-natural Fancy colored diamonds that are marketed as natural. If you deal with a reputable business and also you have been comforted concerning just what you are acquiring, then you will reduce the possibility of something negative taking place to you. Similar to any kind of scenario entailing an expensive purchase of something that few individuals are experienceded in, education needs to be a crucial part of your plan. This is also extra important if you intend to acquire a shade enhanced ruby. Bud Boland has remained in the fashion jewelry company for 40 years and has done every little thing from watchmaking, ruby setup, jewelry production, and also has been a Jeweler for nearly 35 years. He is a Grad Gemologist from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is also the location where he was an Instructor. He has educated concerning diamonds to hundreds of students from all around the globe

Dupont How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all sellers give diamond grading lab reports (aka ruby quality reports) to their consumers. So my general suggestions to you is to maintain your loan in your pocket when handling such jewelers.

Only acquire a diamond interaction ring if it includes the original diamond top quality record.

A lab report is an independent evaluation of the 4Cs of a loosened ruby and also includes a plotted representation of the rock's clarity qualities and a graphic representation of the stone's proportions. Having such a record enables you to contrast diamonds of various top qualities and ultimately aids you make a more informed buying decision.

A seller could reduce edges and also not offer a lab report or an underhanded seller may provide a fake one because of the time, difficulty as well as cost he'll birth to obtaining a rock graded.

Yeah - there is a price for rating a diamond (though that price is at some point paid by the customer), plus the delivery and insurance policy charges for sending the ruby to the laboratory. As well as allow us not fail to remember the possibility cost of a jeweler not having the ruby in his store available for a couple of weeks while the grading occurs.

Nevertheless, a ruby grading report could likewise not be available since the costs to obtaining one could impact as well greatly on the last price of the ring. As an example, a 0.3 ct diamond ring costing $250 claim, might cost around $75 to be rated and also have the report number etched on the band on the diamond. As you search for that excellent ruby engagement ring for your sweetheart, you'll discover that there is a hodgepodge of laboratories asserting to offer trusted diamond rating records. However I would only place my loan on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Lab Information

Yes, all diamond top quality reports are not produced equal. Within the industry, it is a consensus that both premier labs are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America's Treasure Trade Lab) and also the AGS (American Treasure Culture Laboratories).

The GCAL (Treasure Qualification as well as Guarantee Lab) likewise supplies highly related to records or "ruby certificates" as they are referred to by GCAL. The GIA has the strongest global reputation for self-reliance as well as uniformity. Because of their continuous color and also clarity strictness guidelines, the globe's largest and most expensive rubies have been sent there for grading decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL added a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded dazzling rubies.

AGS utilizes the most strict cut requirements in the industry. It utilizes a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that can quality a number of ruby forms. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is identified by the clinical area.

What is more, its Diamond Quality Paper makes use of a distinct as well as exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to examine the 4 Cs - a system which is much easier to understand compared to GIA's grading system. In truth, AGS even goes the added action by relating their 0-10 ranking scale to various other types of score. For example, the standard VS1 ruby clarity rating is a 3 on the AGS Diamond Quality File.

Ruby Reporting - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standardized or regulated and also for this reason you could discover rate 2 labs that employ looser guidelines to the tier 1 grading laboratories discussed above. If you purchase a ruby that has actually been rated by a rate 2 lab, you could end up paying extra for a lesser quality diamond. So as an example, a ruby rated a "F" in color at a rate 2 lab could get a G, H, or lower shade ranking at an extra credible lab. The sector also marks down diamonds rated by lower known laboratories by about 15-30% or even more. So either you only purchase a ruby rated by a tier 1 laboratory or you accept that you may be acquiring a lesser top quality ruby than what is stated on the report if that diamond is graded by a minimal recognized lab.

2. Several huge chain stores have significant agreements with lower known labs with "softer" diamond grading guidelines. Some of these softer labs placed "suggested replacement values" on the laboratory reports - values which are higher than what stores intends offer the diamonds for. So a salesperson in a chain store could claim to you, "Look at the lot you are obtaining right here. We are offering you this ruby involvement ring for $2500 yet the report claims that the recommended substitute worth is $4000." Wow - just what an offer - NOT! This is why it is much better that you rely on just independent rate 1 laboratories.

Also remember that trustworthy ruby grading records are not evaluations and also do not use assessment figures. Diamond evaluations are commonly blatantly inflated and also are not something you'll intend to rely upon.

3. Ruby reports are riddled with disclaimers that specify that nothing is "licensed" or ensured which the labs are not liable for mistakes. In truth, the GIA uses a disclaimer of kinds on their website regarding the usage of words "license." The website says:

"It is inaccurate to state that students, graduates, their organisations, or particular gems are "certified" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not certify any person or anything. Neither a trainee neither a graduate that has actually been granted a certification or diploma, nor a treasure which has been graded or determined by GIA has been certified by GIA".

So it is possible that you the customer is left holding the bag should an inaccuracy in a record is later uncovered. Courts have often ruled that vendors, not labs, are accountable for such mistakes. Why? Since the laboratories indicated in advance that their records couldn't be held accountable.

Luckily, there are a pair means to provide on your own extra customer security:

A. You could fly to India where jewelers offer a lifetime buyback plan to their clients. Too expensive to fly?

B. You might find one of the 20% of US jewelry experts that offer fully adhered diamonds. These are rubies that are marketed with life time breakage, life time trade-in and also lifetime buyback plans.

C. Not as good a treatment as acquiring a completely adhered ruby however you can acquire a diamond that comes with an actual "certificate" as well as not a record. "Licensed diamonds do have guaranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Accreditation Some vendors describe a "diamond record" as a "qualified ruby" yet practically this is not remedy. From a lawful standpoint, a ruby report is a just a professional point of view though in actuality, elements of a ruby grading report are not simply point of views.

For instance, a diamond's carat (weight) could be precisely figured out along with its cut grade by gauging its optical effectiveness or by describing a computer system design. A certification on the other hand is a statement of reality - a file for which the provider approves legal obligation as well as will make restitution to the customer for blunders.

Some leading diamond grading laboratories supply both records and also certificates. AGS offers Ruby Top quality Papers (non-certified reports) and likewise Diamond Top quality Certificates. Ruby High quality Certifications are prepared solely for AGS retail jewelers as well as supplies guaranties from taking part American Gem Culture member shops.

GCAL accredits it's diamond grading also. Its 100% money-back guarantee plan is legitimate for a period of 2 years from the date on the relevant certification. This policy makes sure the precision of the cut, shade and also quality qualities and the carat weight.

A report or certification must will have a number on it that may or might not be engraved on a ruby. You will certainly be able to get in that number on the internet site of the accrediting laboratory to examine a report's credibility.

Elements Of A Diamond Grading Record Ruby rating reports are constantly developing yet specific component must remain the exact same. For example, the:

The Report #. This number is given and also tape-recorded in a laboratory's document and also could or could not be inscribed on a diamond's girdle. You can enter the report number on a rating laboratory's website to examine the authenticity of the ruby top quality report or to obtain more info about the diamond. Forming & Aspect Style: This is the outline and the cutting design used for the aspect arrangement. There are 3 fundamental aspect designs - "fantastic cut, action cut and also mixed reducing design" as well as 12 fundamental shapes which include notables such as round brilliant and also princess cut" diamonds.

Measurements: This refers to dimension (not weight) of a ruby. Size includes dimensions such as length, size, weight and also size. A measurement is commonly noted to the hundredth of a millimeter. Measurements play a huge duty in just how a ruby sparkles.

Carat weight Weight: The weight of a ruby is determined to the hundredth of a carat weight and some also give such procedure to the thousandth of a carat weight (1.123 ct.). Carat is one of the most objective and also the easiest to comprehend of the 4Cs due to the fact that all one has to do is weight the rock. Color Quality: This tells you the level of color absence in the diamond. The much less color the higher the grade.

Rubies are commonly rated from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You should never see diamond color variety such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so forth) on a diamond report. You should only see shade ranges on assessments for rocks that are installed.

Clearness Grade: Basically every diamond has actually inner imperfections called incorporations and also outside imperfections called blemishes. A diamond is rated according to the dimension, type, location and also quantity of these defects.

Quality qualities vary from Perfect (FL) - Consisted Of. Labs make use of a pair experts to quality the clarity of a diamond in order to think of a much more precise reading.

Cut Grade: Extra current ruby reports include a cut grade for standard round fantastic diamonds. Cut thinks about the brilliance, fire and scintillation of the diamond. Cut quality varies from Exceptional - Poor.

Various other components you may discover on a ruby report consist of the polish, proportion, fluorescence and proportion. Equipped with this info, you are much better able making an analysis of the high quality of diamond that is mounted in an engagement ring.

What Are Color Improved Diamonds and Are They For You?

Dupont

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped.
