A wedding, or an engagement in  Catharpin, is one of the most important events in every couple’s life. One of the best ways of making the experience memorable is by choosing the right ring to symbolize the love you have for one another. While most couples would like to get the most beautiful ring they can lay their hands on, budgetary restrictions can be a challenge. However, it is possible to find an ideal ring based on your budget.

For anyone looking for precious diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings in Catharpin, they should consider going about the process carefully. There are various dealers in the market, some of who may sell you fake diamonds. Here are a few useful tips on what to look for when looking for precious diamonds for engagement or wedding rings.

Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in Catharpin. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Catharpin to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in Catharpin for you engagement or wedding.

Catharpin How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

To start our attribute on different sorts of gemstones, we will certainly begin with the most effective and most well known gemstone of them all the ruby. The ruby is the supreme gems. It has very few weak points as well as several toughness. It glows with its phenomenal value as well as emotional value. It is used in wedding event rings to represent unlimited love or utilized as gifts/jewelry to be given to enjoyed ones. But the diamond is a lot greater than its everlasting charm.

The diamond obtains its name from the Greek job adamas suggesting unequalled. In solidity, there is no contrast. The diamond rates in the Mohs range a 10 which is the hardest substance in the world. Its reducing resistance is 140 times that of the ruby as well as sapphire, the gems(Diamond) that are next in the Mohs scale in firmness. The ruby's optical properties such as appeal and also inflexibility make it distinct and also quickly differentiated from various other replicas. Enjoy!

* History of Diamonds

The very first tape-recorded diamond dates back around 800 B.C. in India. Some believe it also dated back 6,000 years earlier. The diamonds were utilized as ornamental purposes and as talismans to prevent bad and also offer protection in fight. During the Dark Ages, diamonds were also specified to be utilized as a clinical aid. Religious medical professionals also told clients that if they hold a diamond in a hand and also make the indicator of the cross would certainly, it would cure as well as illness as well as heal wounds.

Diamonds came to be more popular during the 19th century due to exploration of diamond down payments in South Africa. This discovery results in increased supply, improved cutting and also polishing techniques, and development in economic situation. In 1979, rock hounds found the Argyle pipe in Australia which to this date is the richest diamond down payment in the world. Argyle, ever since, alone is in charge of providing over one third of the globe's diamonds each year.

* Diamonds: Just how are they created?

Rubies includes an allotrope of carbons that are developed in high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. Diamonds are created 90 miles under the Earth's surface area at temperature levels of regarding 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Diamonds are formed deep within the earth and at some point, over incredibly long periods of time, press their means to the earth's surface area, generally through volcanic eruptions.

The age of these diamonds from underneath the surface of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years old! When diamonds are developed as well as begin their climb to the earth's surface, they undergo channels where the lava from the volcano increases to the surface, grabbing diamonds along the method as well as ultimately transferring them externally, where they are ultimately discovered as well as mined.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are 4 unique characteristics that determine the worth and also high quality of a ruby. These are the shade, cut, quality and also carat. Otherwise referred to as the 4 C's of a diamond. In the adhering to, we will certainly discuss these functions thoroughly.

* Shade

In the last e-newsletter, we touch based on the color of gems as being one of the most important function due to the fact that shade is one of the most noticeable attribute. The excellent ruby needs to appear clear as well as anemic but this is not the instance for all diamonds. Diamonds can come in any shade of the rainbow most typical color is a color of yellow or brown. The Geological Institute of America(GIA) have designed a guideline to quality diamond shade. This guideline consists of a lettering system that ranges from the alphabet D - Z. Please see below:

D E F No Color G H I J Almost Colorless K L M Faintly tinted, can't hardly be seen as well as generally yellow in shade N O P Q R Gently tinted, usually yellow. Could be seen with the nude eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, begins with yellow and advances to brown

* Clarity

The cut a ruby is identified by the ruby's proportion such as its shape, size as well as depth. The cut establishes what is called the diamond's "luster". Also if the diamond itself has best shade and clarity, with an inadequate cut the ruby will certainly have a dull brilliance. This is due to the fact that the cut identifies just how light travels within the ruby. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. has actually additionally developed a clarity grading system to place ruby clarity. This grading system includes Remarkable (Fl), Inside Flawless (IF), Very Very Slightly Consisted Of (VV1 or VV2), Really A Little Consisted Of(VS1 or VS2), A Little Included(SI1 or SI2), and Included(I1, I2, as well as I3). Although this system had actually been added to the diamond sector, it is not extensively used. This is due to the reality that it took a great deal of practice and also training to incorporate it.

* Cut

The cut a diamond is determined by the ruby's percentage such as its form, width and deepness. The cut establishes what is called the diamond's "luster". Even if the diamond itself has ideal color and clearness, with a bad cut the ruby will certainly have a boring luster. This is due to the fact that the cut determines exactly how light trips within the diamond.

There are 3 kinds of cuts that can figure out the ruby's luster. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is unfathomable and also ideal cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a ruby that is too reduced, that light traveling with it is shed on the bottom of the stone and also does not come back into view. This cut makes a ruby appear drab as well as plain. A cut that is unfathomable is a cut that is as well high, that light taking a trip through it escapes with the sides as well as darkens the stone. An optimal cut is a best cut on a diamond that shows light to the top of the stone, providing it perfect sparkle.

* Carat

As stated on the last newsletter, a single carat weight(ct) considers about 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller carat rubies that evaluate less compared to a carat weight, it is shared as factors (pt). Factors are 1/100 of a carat. Carat weight of a diamond is vital due to that larger diamonds are rarer compared to smaller sized ones, so generally the larger the diamond the much more pricey it is. There is no standard grading system or layout that can show different carat weight. This is since there are so numerous variants of diamonds fit as well as cut, which makes rocks of comparable weight, look different.

* Replica Diamonds

Since diamonds are one of the most valuable and rarest of all the gems, efforts have been made to replicate and even improve diamonds making use of less costly options. A great deal of times, honest errors have been made and these choices or other gemstones such as spinel were sometimes puzzled with real rubies. Sometimes, some deceitful individuals aim to sell these choices to misfortunate buyers in order to revenue. Listed below we will go over about these choices and also ways to recognize them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

Synthetic rubies are diamonds that are grown made in a research laboratory. The very first known instances of ruby synthesis were declared to be recorded in between 1879 - 1928, but this was never ever verified. It had not been until the 1940's where study began in the USA, Sweden, Soviet Union started researching. Synthetic diamonds are or else understood as High Pressure Heat (HPHT) diamonds or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) diamonds. The name of both these artificial rubies derives from the processes used to develop them. Some of these synthetic diamonds could either have higher, lesser or similar attributes compared to that of a ruby. Therefore, these artificial rubies are made use of for abrasives, cutting and also brightening tools, and also switches in power plant.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond substances that are used to duplicate the look and also even the shape of a diamond. One of the most basic and also well understood simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at ordinary sight can glimmer more compared to a ruby and it is less thick, indicating that a 1 carat weight CZ will certainly be much larger compared to a 1 carat weight diamond. Nowadays, an extra preferred simulant is moissanite, which has all the same attributes of a diamond. These attributes include solidity (Moissanite-9.25 and also diamond-10 in Mohs range), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 and also diamond -2.42) as well as diffusion (Moissanite -.104 and ruby -.044). This makes it difficult to distinguish both at ordinary sight as well as would typically call for testers to inform the distinction. In the next area we will certainly review just how to identify moissanites as well as other replicas.

* Actual or Counterfeit?

An old method of recognizing diamonds is to do a scrape test. This requires scraping a ruby with an additional ruby which is destructive as well as is rarely used nowadays. The most effective as well as most dependable means to test for diamonds is to make use of testers that make use of thermal conductivity. These testers include battery powered thermistors mounted with a retracting copper pointer. This tester functions by infusing the warm onto the checked stone and afterwards the device measures the amount of heat that it conducts. However thermal conductivity testers works best to identify diamonds and also its various other simulants, it will not assist distinguish laboratory developed or artificial stones. To be able to recognize these, particular optical techniques are required. Laboratories use methods such as spectroscopy, microscopy and luminescence in order to identify a particular stones origin. The typical person could use loupes and microscopes to differentiate artificial stones. Natural diamonds normally have small flaws and defects such as incorporations or some kind of international material, which will not be found in synthetics.

Diamonds are naturally readily available in a really broad range of colors. The majority of people understand about colorless rubies as well as GIA's color grading system that is made use of to identify a diamond's body color ... you recognize D, E, F, etc. This shade grading system is just made use of to categorize the most usual diamond body color of yellow nonetheless anytime a diamond is located in another shade like pink, blue, green, and so on; then this ruby is described as a "" expensive diamond"".

All-natural Fancy diamonds can be really costly and also often times extra costly compared to a similar dimension anemic diamond. A very good example of a Fancy diamond is the notorious 45.52 carat elegant deep blue ruby, the Hope Ruby, which gets on display in the Smithsonian Natural History Gallery in Washington, DC.

A shade boosted diamond is a 100% natural diamond that has actually had its color changed. As well as most importantly, shade enhanced rubies can be found in an extremely vast option of shades at really affordable costs!

A little bit of background- For several, years it has been popular that a ruby's shade can be "" enhanced"" by placing a bit of colored compound externally of a ruby and also much like magic ... a ruby that had an obvious yellowish shade would certainly change to a more eye-catching near anemic diamond. Sadly, this sort of shade enhanced diamond can alter back to its original body shade if this colored compound was inadvertently gotten rid of. In more recent years, the technology of color improved rubies has gone incredibly high technology. It is currently feasible to completely change the color of a diamond! These procedures are considered irreversible due to the fact that it does continue to be stable when exposed to day-to-day typical problems. The shade will certainly not discolor if subjected to sunlight or be cleaned off by rough chemicals.

Just how is it done? The wanted end result of any one of these therapies is to have a much more valuable diamond. A much less marketable ruby would be a ruby that has a reduced body color or occasionally a lower clarity. The color enhanced diamond therapy firms recognize if they start with a particular kind of ruby as well as process it for a particular quantity of time that they must end up with a specific color yet it does not always work in this way. This is a scientific research that does require some art in their processes ... the only procedure that offers consistent results is the coating process.

The 3 processes are as follows- Process # 1- HPHT Color Boosted Diamonds- High Pressure/ High Temperature (HPHT) therapy could enhance the color of certain kinds of brown rubies as well as hence enhance their value. General Electric has developed a procedure that basically is a mechanical simulation of a diamond's production in nature. The color boosted ruby will certainly be warmed up to a very high temperature level under a really high, supported stress. Faults in the crystal structure are then repositioned causing a change of the diamond's shade. Because the problems of HPHT are extremely much like diamond's original development, just a well outfitted lab will certainly be able to positively recognize this kind of color enhanced ruby. HPHT was initially made use of to turn yellowish rubies right into even more marketable fancy colored enhanced rubies, now it is likewise used to change some unpopular brownish rubies right into preferred colorless tinted improved rubies.

Process # 2- Irradiated Color Enhanced Diamonds- OK ... do not begin obtaining all delighted because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% secure procedure that is really just like exactly what is made use of to preserve food by exposing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color improved ruby procedure is carried out in numerous different means however the results are all the same. You begin with a low shade (P, Q, R, and so on) 100% natural diamond that has actually already been cut and polished, after that it is exposed to a stream of fast electrons. During this part of the process the diamond will certainly look to a really dark shade due to the fact that some of the atoms in the diamond's crystal framework have actually now been disjointed and this in turn has actually affected the means light travel through the ruby. Next the diamond undergoes a controlled heating (annealing) process, this allows some of those atoms to move (partly fixed) in order to obtain a preferred color.

Refine # 3- Coated Color Improved Diamonds- The covering on refined rubies describes a slim artificial layer that modifies the shade of the diamond. The finishing can either be of the wanted shade or can cause a colored interference-effect. Regrettably in some cases this process is done to trick a purchaser. It is a fairly easy process to execute, it has actually been around for several years (although the coatings products are much better now), and it does not require a great deal of costly advanced equipment. Lately, I've seen some pink layered diamonds on the marketplace, they are very appealing ... and certainly you would certainly need to purchase them knowing that they have actually been layered and also follow your jeweler's standards regarding possessing and also looking after these color enhanced rubies. The layer could be put on the entire of a diamond's surface, just all-time low of the ruby, or to a narrow area near the girdle. A well-applied coating could change the color by several shade quality. Some finishings can be removed with boiling in acid, solid cleansing services, or perhaps family chemicals. In some cases dots or bigger locations of purple or blue ink are repainted on the diamond to assist counteract a yellowish shade. The ruby's setting will generally cover the dots, so they are hard to see in a mounted stone.

So, is a color boosted diamond right for you? Perhaps ... all-natural expensive shade rubies can be gorgeous however they are pricey! Color boosted rubies are affordable as well as allow lots of people to have a vibrantly tinted diamond. Ask your regional jeweler if they have any type of Fancy rubies ... either natural or color enhanced rubies. It is constantly interesting, as well as fun, to consider something different!

Under regular wear the irradiated and also HPHT color improved diamonds will have no troubles of the shade fading away. The only consideration will certainly be when you have to have any kind of service done on the item of fashion jewelry. If this type of color boosted diamond is subjected to excessive quantities of warm it could impact the color. The jeweler will certainly should know that the diamond is a color boosted diamond before any kind of job is done as well as then the jeweler will certainly have the ability to decide on the very best strategy. Shade improved rubies are currently additionally used as the small accent rubies around a larger anemic diamond. There are many exciting pieces of precious jewelry offered with small blue, yellow, black, or green color boosted diamonds.

Currently that you find out about shade boosted diamonds and a person attempts to sell you on just what they call an all-natural elegant tinted ruby yet it is at an extremely bargain rate ... you will certainly know that something simply does not seem ideal regarding the offer. A report from a revered grading laboratory should go along with 100% natural Fancy tinted rubies that are marketed as all-natural. If you deal with a trustworthy firm and also you have been guaranteed concerning just what you are buying, after that you will decrease the opportunity of something poor happening to you. Just like any type of scenario including a pricey acquisition of something that not many people are experienceded in, education and learning needs to be an important part of your strategy. This is even much more essential if you plan to acquire a color enhanced diamond. Bud Boland has remained in the jewelry company for 40 years as well as has actually done every little thing from watchmaking, ruby setting, precious jewelry making, and also has actually been a Jeweler for virtually 35 years. He is a Grad Jeweler from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is likewise the place where he was an Instructor. He has actually educated regarding rubies to numerous students from all over the world

Ways To Acquire Diamonds When Purchasing Wholesale.

Not all vendors supply diamond grading lab records (aka diamond high quality records) to their consumers. So my general recommendations to you is to keep your loan in your pocket when handling such jewelry experts.

Only buy a diamond involvement ring if it comes with the original diamond top quality report.

A lab report is an independent evaluation of the 4Cs of a loosened diamond as well as consists of an outlined layout of the stone's quality characteristics and a visuals representation of the stone's proportions. Having such a report permits you to compare diamonds of different qualities and also inevitably helps you make an even more notified purchasing decision.

A merchant might cut edges and also not give a laboratory report or an unscrupulous seller may provide a fake one due to the moment, trouble and expense he'll birth to obtaining a stone graded.

Yeah - there is a price for rating a ruby (though that expense is ultimately paid by the consumer), plus the delivery as well as insurance charges for sending out the diamond to the lab. And let us not fail to remember the chance price of a jeweler not having the ruby in his shop up for sale for a few weeks while the grading happens.

Nevertheless, a diamond rating record might likewise not be readily available because the prices to obtaining one could impact as well greatly on the last price of the ring. For instance, a 0.3 ct diamond ring setting you back $250 state, may cost around $75 to be rated and have the record number etched on the girdle on the diamond. As you look for that ideal ruby engagement ring for your sweetie, you'll discover that there is an alphabet soup of labs asserting to supply trusted ruby rating reports. However I would only place my money on ...

The Premier Ruby Grading Lab Information

Yes, all ruby top quality records are not produced equal. Within the market, it is a consensus that both premier labs are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America's Treasure Profession Laboratory) and also the AGS (American Treasure Culture Laboratories).

The GCAL (Treasure Accreditation and also Assurance Lab) additionally offers extremely pertained to records or "diamond certificates" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the best worldwide online reputation for freedom and also consistency. Due to their consistent shade as well as clearness strictness standards, the globe's biggest and most pricey rubies have actually been sent out there for grading years. In 2006, GIA-GTL added a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded fantastic rubies.

AGS uses the most strict cut criteria in the industry. It utilizes a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that can grade numerous ruby shapes. In reality, it is the only cut grading system that is acknowledged by the scientific community.

Exactly what is even more, its Diamond Top quality Paper makes use of an one-of-a-kind as well as proprietary 0 to 10 grading system to assess the 4 Cs - a system which is less complicated to comprehend compared to GIA's grading system. As a matter of fact, AGS even goes the added step by relating their 0-10 score range to various other types of ranking. As an example, the conventional VS1 diamond clarity rating is a 3 on the AGS Diamond Quality File.

Diamond Reporting - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standardized or regulated and for this reason you could come throughout tier 2 laboratories that use looser standards to the tier 1 grading laboratories stated above. If you buy a diamond that has actually been graded by a rate 2 lab, you might finish up paying more for a minimal high quality ruby. So for instance, a ruby ranked a "F" in color at a tier 2 laboratory might get a G, H, or reduced shade rating at an extra trustworthy lab. The industry likewise marks down rubies graded by lesser well-known laboratories by about 15-30% or more. So either you just purchase a ruby rated by a rate 1 laboratory or you accept that you may be acquiring a minimal high quality diamond than exactly what is specified on the record if that diamond is rated by a minimal recognized laboratory.

2. Many huge store have substantial contracts with lesser recognized laboratories with "softer" diamond grading guidelines. Some of these softer laboratories put "recommended replacement worths" on the laboratory records - worths which are greater compared to exactly what stores means offer the rubies for. So a salesman in a chain store may say to you, "Look at the wonderful bargain you are obtaining here. We are marketing you this ruby involvement ring for $2500 however the record says that the recommended replacement worth is $4000." Wow - exactly what a deal - NOT! This is why it is better that you rely on only independent rate 1 labs.

Likewise bear in mind that credible diamond grading records are not assessments and don't use appraisal figures. Diamond assessments are typically blatantly filled with air and also are not something you'll want to count on.

3. Diamond records are filled with please notes that specify that absolutely nothing is "accredited" or ensured and also that the labs are not accountable for errors. Actually, the GIA offers a disclaimer of types on their site concerning the use of the word "certify." The internet site states:

"It is inaccurate to state that trainees, grads, their services, or specific gemstones are "licensed" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of America does not certify any person or anything. Neither a pupil neither a graduate that has actually been granted a certification or diploma, neither a gem which has been graded or recognized by GIA has actually been licensed by GIA".

So it is possible that you the consumer is left holding the bag should an inaccuracy in a report is later found. Courts have actually regularly ruled that vendors, not labs, are accountable for such errors. Why? Because the labs suggested beforehand that their reports could not be held liable.

Thankfully, there are a couple ways to give on your own a lot more buyer security:

A. You can fly to India where jewelry experts offer a life time buyback plan to their clients. Too pricey to fly?

B. You could discover one of the 20% people jewelry experts that offer fully bonded rubies. These are rubies that are offered with lifetime breakage, life time trade-in as well as lifetime buyback plans.

C. Not as good a treatment as purchasing a completely bound ruby yet you can acquire a ruby that features a real "certification" and also not a report. "Certified diamonds do have guaranties" albeit for much shorter periods.

Certification Some vendors refer to a "diamond record" as a "certified ruby" yet technically this is not deal with. From a legal point ofview, a ruby report is a just an experienced point of view though in reality, aspects of a diamond grading report are not simply point of views.

For instance, a ruby's carat (weight) can be precisely established in addition to its cut grade by measuring its optical efficiency or by describing a computer system design. A certification on the various other hand is a declaration of reality - a document for which the issuer approves legal obligation as well as will make restitution to the consumer for blunders.

Some leading ruby grading labs provide both records and certificates. AGS provides Ruby Top quality Documents (non-certified reports) as well as Diamond Quality Certificates. Ruby High quality Certifications are ready specifically for AGS retail jewelers and also uses guaranties from taking part American Gem Culture participant shops.

GCAL licenses it's ruby grading additionally. Its 100% money-back warranty plan is legitimate for a duration of two years from the day on the applicable certificate. This policy guarantees the precision of the cut, color and clearness grades and the carat weight.

A record or certification must will certainly have a number on it that may or could not be inscribed on a diamond. You will be able to get in that number on the site of the accrediting lab to inspect a record's legitimacy.

Components Of A Diamond Grading Record Diamond grading reports are constantly developing yet certain aspect needs to continue to be the same. For example, the:

The Report #. This number is offered and also taped in a lab's document as well as might or might not be engraved on a ruby's girdle. You can get in the record number on a rating lab's internet site to inspect the credibility of the ruby top quality record or to obtain more details about the ruby. Forming & Aspect Style: This is the summary and also the reducing design used for the facet setup. There are 3 fundamental facet designs - "brilliant cut, action cut and mixed reducing design" as well as 12 standard shapes which include notables such as round great and princess cut" diamonds.

Measurements: This refers to size (not weight) of a ruby. Size includes measurements such as size, width, weight and also diameter. A measurement is generally listed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Measurements play a big role in just how a ruby shines.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is measured to the hundredth of a carat and some even provide such procedure to the thousandth of a carat (1.123 ct.). Carat is one of the most unbiased as well as the easiest to recognize of the 4Cs because all one has to do is weight the stone. Color Grade: This informs you the level of color absence in the diamond. The less shade the higher the quality.

Diamonds are normally graded from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the diamond. You ought to never see ruby color array such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so on) on a ruby record. You should only see color arrays on assessments for stones that are placed.

Clarity Grade: Virtually every ruby has actually inner imperfections called additions as well as outside imperfections called acnes. A diamond is graded according to the size, type, place and amount of these flaws.

5 Tips on What To Look For When Buying Diamonds For Wedding Rings

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.

The Big 4 Cs For Loose Diamonds

Catharpin
