Ozona How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Diamonds are normally offered in an extremely wide variety of shades. Lots of people understand about colorless diamonds and GIA's color grading system that is made use of to classify a diamond's body color ... you recognize D, E, F, and so on. This color grading system is just made use of to classify the most common ruby body color of yellow however anytime a diamond is discovered in an additional shade like pink, blue, green, etc.; after that this diamond is referred to as a "" fancy ruby"".

All-natural Fancy rubies could be very pricey and also many times more pricey than a comparable size anemic ruby. A great instance of a Fancy ruby is the infamous 45.52 carat expensive deep blue diamond, the Hope Ruby, which gets on screen in the Smithsonian Natural Background Museum in Washington, DC.

A color enhanced ruby is a 100% natural ruby that has had its color changed. And best of all, shade improved diamonds come in a very broad option of colors at extremely inexpensive rates!

A little bit of background- For lots of, several years it has been popular that a ruby's shade could be "" boosted"" by placing a little bit of colored substance externally of a ruby as well as simply like magic ... a diamond that had a noticeable yellow-colored shade would certainly alter to an extra appealing near anemic diamond. Unfortunately, this kind of shade boosted diamond might change back to its original body color if this tinted material was accidentally eliminated. In even more current years, the technology of color improved rubies has actually gone exceptionally advanced. It is now possible to totally change the shade of a ruby! These procedures are considered permanent because it does continue to be stable when exposed to day-to-day regular conditions. The shade will not fade if subjected to sunlight or be cleaned off by rough chemicals.

Exactly how is it done? The preferred end result of any of these treatments is to have a more valuable diamond. A much less marketable diamond would be a ruby that has a low body shade or occasionally a lower clearness. The color improved diamond therapy companies know if they begin with a specific kind of diamond as well as process it for a certain quantity of time that they should wind up with a particular shade however it does not always function by doing this. This is a scientific research that does need some art in their processes ... the only procedure that offers regular outcomes is the covering procedure.

The 3 procedures are as adheres to- Process # 1- HPHT Color Enhanced Diamonds- High Stress/ Heat (HPHT) treatment can improve the shade of particular kinds of brownish diamonds and also therefore increase their worth. General Electric has created a procedure that virtually is a mechanical simulation of a diamond's creation in nature. The color improved diamond will certainly be warmed up to a very heat under a really high, supported pressure. Mistakes in the crystal structure are after that rearranged resulting in an alteration of the ruby's color. Since the problems of HPHT are very just like diamond's initial development, only a well outfitted laboratory will have the ability to favorably recognize this type of shade improved diamond. HPHT wased initially made use of to turn yellow-colored diamonds into even more valuable fancy tinted improved diamonds, today it is also utilized to change some unpopular brownish diamonds right into even more preferable colorless tinted enhanced rubies.

Process # 2- Irradiated Color Boosted Diamonds- OK ... do not begin obtaining all delighted since you saw words irradiated! This is a 100% secure process that is extremely just like just what is utilized to maintain food by revealing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color enhanced ruby process is performed in several various ways yet the outcomes are just the same. You start with a low shade (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% natural diamond that has currently been cut as well as polished, after that it is subjected to a stream of rapid electrons. Throughout this part of the process the ruby will certainly transform to a really dark color because several of the atoms in the diamond's crystal framework have now been dislocated and this subsequently has influenced the method light passes via the diamond. Next the ruby experiences a controlled home heating (annealing) process, this permits a few of those atoms to relocate (partly fixed) in order to get a wanted shade.

Refine # 3- Layered Color Improved Diamonds- The layer on sleek diamonds describes a slim man-made layer that modifies the color of the ruby. The finish can either be of the preferred color or could cause a tinted interference-effect. Unfortunately occasionally this procedure is done to deceive a buyer. It is a relatively easy process to do, it has actually been around for years (although the coverings products are far better currently), as well as it does not need a great deal of expensive advanced equipment. Just recently, I've seen some pink covered rubies on the marketplace, they are extremely eye-catching ... as well as of program you would certainly have to acquire them knowing that they have actually been covered and also follow your jewelry expert's guidelines regarding having and caring for these shade improved diamonds. The layer could be put on the whole of a ruby's surface area, simply the bottom of the ruby, or to a slim zone near the girdle. A well-applied coating could transform the color by one or more color grade. Some coatings could be removed via boiling in acid, solid cleaning options, and even home chemicals. Occasionally dots or larger locations of purple or blue ink are painted on the ruby to aid neutralize a yellowish shade. The diamond's setup will typically cover the dots, so they are hard to see in a mounted stone.

So, is a color boosted ruby right for you? Perhaps ... natural expensive shade diamonds can be lovely yet they are costly! Color enhanced rubies are inexpensive and allow many individuals to possess a brightly colored diamond. Ask your neighborhood jeweler if they have any Fancy rubies ... either natural or shade improved diamonds. It is constantly interesting, and enjoyable, to look at something different!

Under regular wear the irradiated and HPHT shade improved diamonds will have no worry of the shade fading away. The only factor to consider will be when you should have any kind of sort of solution done on the piece of fashion jewelry. If this kind of color improved diamond is revealed to too much amounts of heat it could impact the shade. The jewelry expert will need to know that the diamond is a shade improved ruby before any work is done and after that the jeweler will certainly have the ability to make a decision on the very best training course of activity. Color enhanced rubies are now additionally made use of as the little accent rubies around a bigger colorless diamond. There are lots of interesting items of jewelry available with tiny blue, yellow, black, or environment-friendly shade boosted rubies.

Currently that you recognize regarding shade improved diamonds and somebody tries to market you on just what they call an all-natural fancy colored diamond however it goes to an extremely bargain cost ... you will certainly recognize that something just does not sound best about the deal. A record from a revered grading laboratory ought to accompany natural Fancy colored rubies that are marketed as all-natural. If you manage a respectable business and you have actually been reassured about exactly what you are buying, then you will decrease the possibility of something poor occurring to you. Just like any type of circumstance entailing a pricey acquisition of something that not numerous people are well versed in, education needs to be a crucial part of your strategy. This is a lot more important if you prepare to acquire a shade improved diamond. Bud Boland has remained in the precious jewelry service for 40 years as well as has done whatever from watchmaking, diamond setting, precious jewelry production, and has actually been a Jeweler for virtually 35 years. He is a Grad Gemologist from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is additionally the area where he was a Trainer. Ozona

To begin our attribute on different sorts of gems, we will certainly start with the best as well as most well known gemstone of them all the diamond. The ruby is the ultimate gems. It has extremely few weak points and numerous toughness. It shines with its remarkable worth and nostalgic value. It is used in wedding event rings to stand for limitless love or used as gifts/jewelry to be provided to liked ones. Yet the ruby is so a lot more than its eternal appeal.

The ruby acquires its name from the Greek work adamas implying unequalled. In firmness, there is no contrast. The diamond rates in the Mohs range a 10 which is the hardest compound in the world. Its cutting resistance is 140 times that of the ruby and sapphire, the gemstones(Corundum) that are next in the Mohs scale in solidity. The diamond's optical homes such as gloss and inflexibility make it distinct and conveniently distinguished from various other replicas. Appreciate!

* History of Diamonds

The first taped ruby go back around 800 B.C. in India. Some believe it also dated back 6,000 years earlier. The diamonds were made use of as attractive objectives as well as as amulets to ward off evil and also give security in battle. During the Dark Ages, rubies were even mentioned to be made use of as a medical aid. Spiritual doctors also informed individuals that if they hold a ruby in a hand as well as make the indicator of the cross would certainly, it would treat and disease as well as recover injuries.

Rubies became extra preferred during the 19th century as a result of discovery of diamond deposits in South Africa. This discovery results in enhanced supply, enhanced cutting and brightening methods, and also development in economic situation. In 1979, geologists located the Argyle pipe in Australia which to this day is the wealthiest ruby down payment on the planet. Argyle, ever since, alone is in charge of supplying over one third of the world's diamonds annually.

* Diamonds: Just how are they created?

Diamonds is composed of an allotrope of carbons that are created in high-pressure, high-temperature problems. Rubies are produced 90 miles under the Earth's surface at temperature levels of regarding 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Diamonds are created deep within the earth and also eventually, over extremely long periods of time, press their method to the planet's surface, typically through volcanic eruptions.

The age of these rubies from underneath the surface of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years old! When rubies are developed and also start their ascent to the planet's surface area, they go via channels where the lava from the volcano climbs to the surface area, getting diamonds in the process as well as at some point depositing them externally, where they are at some point located and also mined.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are four distinctive qualities that determine the worth and also quality of a ruby. These are the shade, cut, clarity and carat. Or else known as the 4 C's of a diamond. In the adhering to, we will certainly discuss these attributes in detail.

* Shade

In the last newsletter, we touch based on the color of gems as being the most important function as a result of the truth that shade is the most apparent attribute. The ideal ruby must show up clear and also anemic however this is not the case for all rubies. Diamonds could be available in any kind of color of the rainbow most typical shade is a shade of yellow or brownish. The Geological Institute of America(GIA) have actually developed a standard to quality diamond shade. This guideline includes a text system that varies from the alphabet D - Z. Please see listed below:

D E F No Shade G H I J Almost Anemic K L M Faintly colored, can not hardly be seen and also typically yellow in color N O P Q R Lightly tinted, generally yellow. Can be seen with the naked eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, starts from yellow and also progresses to brown

* Clearness

The cut a diamond is identified by the diamond's proportion such as its form, width as well as deepness. The cut establishes exactly what is called the ruby's "radiance". Even if the ruby itself has excellent shade and clarity, with an inadequate cut the ruby will certainly have a boring luster. This is due to the fact that the cut figures out just how light trips within the ruby. The Gemological Institute of America has also developed a quality grading system to rate ruby clearness. This grading system consists of Flawless (Fl), Inside Perfect (IF), Very Extremely Slightly Included (VV1 or VV2), Very Somewhat Included(VS1 or VS2), Somewhat Included(SI1 or SI2), and also Included(I1, I2, as well as I3). Although this system had actually been added to the diamond market, it is not commonly used. This is due to that it took a great deal of practice and also training to incorporate it.

* Cut

The cut a diamond is established by the diamond's proportion such as its form, size and deepness. The cut establishes just what is called the diamond's "luster". Also if the ruby itself has best color and also clearness, with an inadequate cut the diamond will have a dull luster. This is since the cut figures out just how light travels within the ruby.

There are 3 kinds of cuts that can establish the ruby's sparkle. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is as well deep and ideal cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a diamond that is also low, that light traveling with it is shed on the bottom of the stone and also does not come back into view. This cut makes a ruby show up drab and also dull. A cut that is unfathomable is a cut that is expensive, that light traveling via it escapes via the sides as well as dims the stone. An ideal cut is an ideal cut on a ruby that mirrors light to the top of the rock, offering it best sparkle.

* Carat

As specified on the last e-newsletter, a single carat weight(ct) considers concerning 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller carat weight rubies that consider less than a carat, it is revealed as points (pt). Points are 1/100 of a carat weight. Carat weight of a ruby is very important due to that bigger diamonds are rarer compared to smaller sized ones, so generally the larger the diamond the extra pricey it is. There is no common grading system or layout that can show different carat weight. This is since there are so numerous variants of rubies in form and cut, which makes rocks of comparable weight, look various.

* Imitation Diamonds

Considering that rubies are the most important and rarest of all the gemstones, initiatives have been made to duplicate and even enhance diamonds using more economical options. A whole lot of times, sincere errors have been made and also these choices or various other gems such as spinel were in some cases perplexed with genuine diamonds. In many cases, some dishonest people attempt to market these choices to misfortunate buyers in order to earnings. Below we will go over regarding these alternatives and also means to identify them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

Artificial rubies are rubies that are expanded produced in a lab. The first known situations of diamond synthesis were asserted to be documented between 1879 - 1928, but this was never ever confirmed. It had not been up until the 1940's where study started in the USA, Sweden, Soviet Union started researching. Artificial rubies are or else called High Stress High Temperature (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Deposit (CVD) rubies. The name of both these synthetic rubies originates from the procedures made use of to develop them. Some of these synthetic diamonds can either have greater, lesser or similar attributes compared to that of a ruby. As a result, these artificial rubies are made use of for abrasives, reducing and polishing devices, and also changes in power plant.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond compounds that are used to reproduce the look as well as the form of a ruby. The most basic as well as well understood simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at ordinary sight could sparkle greater than a ruby and it is much less dense, suggesting that a 1 carat CZ will be much larger than a 1 carat ruby. Nowadays, a much more popular simulant is moissanite, which has just the same features of a diamond. These features consist of solidity (Moissanite-9.25 as well as diamond-10 in Mohs range), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 and diamond -2.42) and also diffusion (Moissanite -.104 and also ruby -.044). This makes it hard to distinguish the two at plain view as well as would frequently require testers to inform the distinction. In the following section we will certainly discuss just how to determine moissanites as well as other replicas.

* Genuine or Phony?

An old technique of identifying rubies is to do a scrape test. This requires scraping a diamond with another ruby which is destructive and is hardly ever used nowadays. The very best and most reputable method to examine for rubies is to use testers that make use of thermal conductivity. These testers are composed of battery powered thermistors installed with a retractable copper pointer. This tester functions by infusing the warmth onto the tested rock and afterwards the device determines the amount of warmth that it carries out. However thermal conductivity testers works best to identify rubies as well as its various other simulants, it will certainly not help identify laboratory developed or artificial stones. To be able to identify these, certain optical strategies are needed. Laboratories make use of methods such as spectroscopy, microscopy and also luminescence in order to determine a particular stones origin. The typical individual could utilize loupes as well as microscopic lens to distinguish synthetic stones. All-natural diamonds usually have small flaws and defects such as additions or some type of foreign product, which will not be located in synthetics.

Ozona How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
