Ask for Proof of Certification

The Big 4 Cs For Loose Diamonds

Exactly how are diamond cut qualities assigned?

This is where points begin to get made complex. The approaches made use of to quantitatively assess the quality of a cut vary. The way the GIA determines just what a ruby's cut grade need to be, for instance, varies in very specific means from the method various other certifiers like the AGS do it. Most of the times, these organizations do not disclose the exact information of the procedures they utilize.

The shape of a ruby likewise makes a difference with respect to exactly how its cut quality is figured out. Although there are some standard criteria that continue to be the same for any kind of kind of diamond, the precise methods made use of to quality a round ruby's cut are different from those utilized to quality a heart-shaped diamond's cut.

The rest of this explanation will certainly concentrate on round rubies, as this is without a doubt one of the most usual ruby form. One of the factors impacting the cut quality of a rounded diamond is the number of facets it has. Elements are the flat, defined locations externally of a diamond. The aspects on round rubies are generally triangular. Currently, it's thought that the optimal round diamond need to have 33 facets on the crown (the section of the ruby that sits above the band, which itself is the widest factor of the ruby) and 25 on the pavilion (the reduced, much longer section of the ruby). When there are flaws externally of the ruby, cutters may include extra elements in order to cover them. This results in a deterioration in the total top quality of the cut.

While the aspect count is typically decideded upon as a great way of judging the quality of a diamond cut, there are various other factors on which gemologists regularly disagree. Several of the various other variables made use of by some authorities to help identify cut grades include the height of the diamond's crown, the depth of the pavilion, the size of the table (the top of the crown), as well as the angles of the crown and structure.

The American Standard benchmark for round rubies calls for a crown height of 16.2%, pavilion depth of 43.1%, and table diameter of 53% of the complete girdle diameter. The Ideal Great criteria, however, asks for 19.2% crown height, 40% structure depth, and 56.5% table size. While these distinctions might be difficult for novices to recognize, they are a great illustration of the difficulties connected with producing a straightforward analysis of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some arguments about the precise percentages that constitute the ideal diamond cut, for possible diamond buyers, one of the most important point to understand is that diamond accreditations given by organizations like the AGS and also GIA are reliable as well as purposeful. Trusted diamond suppliers base the rates at which they acquire and also offer diamonds on the cut along with the remainder of the "4 Cs." When you acquire a ruby, you do not need to fret about the assumption of just what makes a good ruby cut changing a lot that the worth of your diamond will be substantially influenced.

Which diamond cut grade stands for the best worth?

Which kind of diamond is best for you mainly depends upon your budget. For buyers that agree to buy them, suppliers normally advise rubies with the greatest possible cut qualities. Nonetheless, this could result from some self-involvement on their part.

The various other 3 Cs have an effect on ruby rates also, so it can be difficult to assess the precise difference in cost between a Suitable or Excellent cut diamond as well as a Great cut. For laid-back customers and also budget-conscious investors alike, rubies with a Great or Excellent cut quality can stand for an exceptional worth. This is because, while they can be extra economical compared to or else equal Perfect or Superb cut diamonds, the visible distinction in high quality is very little.

At the same time, don't hesitate to utilize your discernment. If, as an example, you come throughout a diamond with an Ideal reduced rating which has great rankings in the other classifications and also is still within your budget, after that you ought to certainly consider it, as long as you're taking care of a respectable vendor.

Sekiu How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all sellers provide ruby grading lab reports (aka diamond high quality reports) to their customers. So my basic recommendations to you is to keep your loan in your pocket when managing such jewelers.

Just acquire a ruby interaction ring if it includes the original diamond top quality record.

A laboratory record is an independent examination of the 4Cs of a loose diamond and consists of an outlined diagram of the stone's quality characteristics and a visuals representation of the rock's percentages. Having such a record enables you to contrast diamonds of different qualities as well as inevitably assists you make an even more informed buying decision.

A seller could reduce corners as well as not provide a lab record or an unscrupulous seller might offer a phony one since of the time, problem as well as expense he'll bear to obtaining a rock rated.

Yeah - there is a rate for grading a diamond (though that price is eventually paid by the customer), plus the shipping and insurance coverage charges for sending out the ruby to the laboratory. And also allow us not forget the opportunity price of a jeweler not having the diamond in his store available for sale for a couple of weeks while the grading occurs.

However, a ruby grading record may likewise not be offered due to the fact that the costs to getting one may impact also heavily on the last rate of the ring. As an example, a 0.3 ct diamond ring costing $250 state, could cost around $75 to be rated as well as have the record number etched on the band on the ruby. As you look for that suitable ruby interaction ring for your sweetheart, you'll locate that there is a hodgepodge of labs claiming to give respectable diamond grading records. However I would just put my loan on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Lab News

Yes, all diamond high quality records are not created equivalent. Within the sector, it is a consensus that both premier labs are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America's Treasure Trade Lab) as well as the AGS (American Treasure Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Accreditation and Guarantee Lab) likewise supplies extremely concerned reports or "ruby certifications" as they are referred to by GCAL. The GIA has the best international credibility for independence as well as uniformity. As a result of their consistent shade as well as clarity strictness standards, the globe's largest as well as most expensive rubies have actually been sent there for rating decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded fantastic diamonds.

AGS makes use of the strictest cut criteria in the industry. It makes use of a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that can quality several ruby forms. In truth, it is the only cut grading system that is acknowledged by the clinical area.

Just what is more, its Ruby Top quality Paper utilizes an unique and proprietary 0 to 10 grading system to assess the 4 Cs - a system which is easier to understand than GIA's grading system. Actually, AGS also goes the additional step by relating their 0-10 score range to various other kinds of score. As an example, the conventional VS1 diamond clarity score is a 3 on the AGS Ruby High Quality Paper.

Ruby Reporting - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standard or controlled and thus you may encounter rate 2 laboratories that utilize looser guidelines to the rate 1 grading labs discussed above. If you get a ruby that has been graded by a tier 2 laboratory, you might finish up paying a lot more for a minimal top quality diamond. So for instance, a diamond ranked a "F" in color at a tier 2 laboratory could obtain a G, H, or lower color rating at a more respectable laboratory. The market additionally discounts rubies rated by lower well-known labs by regarding 15-30% or even more. So either you only get a ruby rated by a rate 1 lab or you approve that you could be buying a minimal top quality diamond than what is mentioned on the record if that ruby is graded by a lesser well-known lab.

2. Several large store have big contracts with lower well-known laboratories with "softer" diamond grading guidelines. Some of these softer laboratories put "suggested replacement worths" on the lab records - worths which are above exactly what stores means market the rubies for. So a salesperson in a store could claim to you, "Look at the lot you are obtaining here. We are selling you this ruby engagement ring for $2500 however the report claims that the suggested substitute value is $4000." Wow - just what a deal - NOT! This is why it is much better that you trust just independent rate 1 laboratories.

Also remember that trusted diamond grading records are not evaluations and don't offer appraisal numbers. Diamond appraisals are typically grossly filled with air and are not something you'll desire to rely upon.

3. Ruby reports are riddled with please notes that define that absolutely nothing is "certified" or assured and also that the laboratories are not accountable for errors. As a matter of fact, the GIA offers a please note of kinds on their web site relating to using the word "certify." The internet site claims:

"It is wrong to state that pupils, graduates, their organisations, or specific gems are "accredited" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not license any individual or anything. Neither a pupil neither a grad who has been granted a certification or diploma, neither a treasure which has been graded or recognized by GIA has actually been certified by GIA".

So it is possible that you the consumer is left holding the bag should an inaccuracy in a report is later on found. Courts have frequently ruled that sellers, not laboratories, are accountable for such mistakes. Why? Since the laboratories showed in advance that their reports couldn't be held accountable.

The good news is, there are a couple ways to offer yourself extra customer security:

A. You can fly to India where jewelers offer a lifetime buyback plan to their clients. As well expensive to fly?

B. You might find among the 20% people jewelers who offer fully bonded diamonds. These are rubies that are marketed with lifetime damage, lifetime trade-in as well as lifetime buyback plans.

C. Not as great a solution as buying a fully adhered ruby however you can buy a diamond that has an actual "certificate" as well as not a record. "Licensed rubies do feature warranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Certification Some vendors refer to a "diamond record" as a "qualified diamond" however practically this is not deal with. From a lawful point ofview, a ruby report is a just a professional opinion though in actuality, elements of a diamond grading record are not just viewpoints.

As an example, a diamond's carat (weight) could be precisely established as well as its cut grade by measuring its optical efficiency or by referring to a computer version. A certificate on the various other hand is a statement of fact - a record for which the issuer approves legal obligation as well as will certainly make restitution to the consumer for errors.

Some leading diamond grading labs supply both reports and certificates. AGS provides Diamond Top quality Records (non-certified reports) as well as additionally Diamond Top quality Certificates. Ruby Quality Certifications are ready specifically for AGS retail jewelers and supplies warranties from getting involved American Gem Culture participant stores.

GCAL certifies it's ruby grading also. Its 100% money-back warranty policy is legitimate for a duration of two years from the date on the applicable certification. This plan guarantees the precision of the cut, color and clarity grades and the carat weight.

A report or certificate should will have a number on it that may or may not be engraved on a diamond. You will certainly be able to enter that number on the web site of the licensing lab to inspect a report's credibility.

Components Of A Ruby Grading Report Diamond rating reports are constantly progressing yet particular element should continue to be the same. As an example, the:

The Report #. This number is offered as well as recorded in a lab's document and might or could not be engraved on a ruby's girdle. You could get in the record number on a rating laboratory's website to inspect the credibility of the diamond quality record or to get even more details about the diamond. Forming & Facet Style: This is the summary and the reducing design made use of for the facet setup. Color Grade: This tells you the level of shade lack in the ruby. The less color the greater the grade.

Rubies are usually graded from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the diamond. You need to never see diamond shade variety such as (G-H, I-J-K, and more) on a ruby report. You need to only see shade arrays on assessments for stones that are mounted.

Quality Quality: Virtually every ruby has actually internal blemishes called inclusions and also exterior blemishes called imperfections. A ruby is rated according to the size, type, location and also amount of these problems.

Clarity grades vary from Flawless (FL) - Included. Labs use a pair professionals to quality the quality of a ruby in order to generate a much more exact analysis.

Cut Grade: Much more current diamond records consist of a cut grade for standard round fantastic rubies. Cut considers the radiance, fire and scintillation of the diamond. Cut quality varies from Superb - Poor.

Various other aspects you may come across on a diamond report include the gloss, balance, fluorescence and also proportion. Equipped with this info, you are better able to make an assessment of the top quality of diamond that is placed in an interaction ring.

To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Sekiu to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in Sekiu for you engagement or wedding.

Sekiu How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Rubies are normally available in a very large range of shades. Many people understand about anemic diamonds and also GIA's shade grading system that is made use of to identify a ruby's body color ... you understand D, E, F, etc. This color grading system is only utilized to identify the most usual ruby body color of yellow nevertheless anytime a ruby is found in an additional color like pink, blue, environment-friendly, etc.; after that this diamond is referred to as a "" fancy ruby"".

Natural Fancy rubies can be extremely pricey as well as lot of times a lot more pricey than a comparable dimension colorless diamond. An excellent instance of a Fancy ruby is the infamous 45.52 carat weight fancy deep blue ruby, the Hope Diamond, which is on screen in the Smithsonian Natural Background Museum in Washington, DC.

A shade boosted diamond is a 100% natural ruby that has actually had its color changed. As well as most importantly, shade boosted rubies been available in a really vast choice of shades at very affordable costs!

A little background- For many, years it has actually been well recognized that a diamond's shade could be "" improved"" by placing a little bit of tinted substance on the surface of a diamond and much like magic ... a ruby that had a visible yellow-colored shade would certainly alter to an extra appealing near anemic ruby. However, this sort of shade enhanced ruby might alter back to its initial body shade if this tinted material was unintentionally eliminated. In more recent years, the innovation of color boosted diamonds has gone exceptionally advanced. It is now feasible to totally change the shade of a ruby! These processes are thought about permanent because it does stay stable when subjected to everyday normal conditions. The shade will not fade if exposed to sunlight or be cleaned off by extreme chemicals.

Just how is it done? The desired outcome of any of these therapies is to have a much more valuable ruby. A less marketable diamond would be a diamond that has a low body shade or in some cases a lower clearness. The color boosted ruby therapy firms understand if they start off with a particular kind of ruby and also procedure it for a particular quantity of time that they need to wind up with a specific shade but it does not constantly work by doing this. This is a scientific research that does require some art in their procedures ... the only procedure that gives constant results is the covering procedure.

The three processes are as follows- Refine # 1- HPHT Shade Boosted Diamonds- High Stress/ High Temperature Level (HPHT) therapy could improve the shade of particular kinds of brownish diamonds and therefore boost their value. General Electric has created a process that virtually is a mechanical simulation of a diamond's creation in nature. The color enhanced ruby will certainly be warmed up to an extremely high temperature under a very high, stabilized pressure. Mistakes in the crystal structure are then repositioned leading to a modification of the ruby's shade. Because the problems of HPHT are very comparable to diamond's initial development, just a well furnished lab will have the ability to favorably determine this type of shade enhanced ruby. HPHT wased initially utilized to transform yellowish rubies right into even more valuable fancy tinted enhanced rubies, and now it is also utilized to change some undesirable brown diamonds right into even more preferable colorless tinted boosted diamonds.

Refine # 2- Irradiated Shade Improved Diamonds- OK ... do not start obtaining all thrilled because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% secure procedure that is really just like what is used to preserve food by subjecting it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color enhanced diamond process is performed in a number of various methods however the outcomes are just the same. You begin with a low shade (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% all-natural diamond that has actually currently been cut and also polished, after that it is revealed to a stream of rapid electrons. Throughout this component of the procedure the ruby will certainly look to a very dark shade due to the fact that some of the atoms in the ruby's crystal structure have actually currently been dislocated as well as this consequently has actually affected the method light go through the diamond. Next the ruby undergoes a regulated heating (annealing) procedure, this allows a few of those atoms to move (partially fixed) in order to get a preferred color.

Process # 3- Layered Shade Enhanced Diamonds- The coating on polished rubies describes a slim synthetic layer that changes the color of the ruby. The finish can either be of the wanted shade or could cause a colored interference-effect. Regrettably in some cases this process is done to deceive a purchaser. It is a relatively easy process to perform, it has been around for several years (although the finishings materials are much better now), and also it does not need a lot of pricey advanced equipment. Lately, I've seen some pink layered rubies on the marketplace, they are very attractive ... and of course you would certainly have to buy them recognizing that they have been coated and also follow your jeweler's standards regarding owning as well as taking care of these color enhanced rubies. The covering could be related to the whole of a ruby's surface area, simply all-time low of the ruby, or to a slim zone near the girdle. A well-applied layer could alter the shade by one or more shade quality. Some finishings could be removed via steaming in acid, solid cleaning services, or also home chemicals. In some cases dots or bigger areas of purple or blue ink are painted on the ruby to help neutralize a yellow-colored shade. The ruby's setting will generally cover the dots, so they are hard to see in a placed rock.

So, is a shade improved ruby right for you? Maybe ... all-natural elegant shade rubies could be stunning yet they are expensive! Color improved diamonds are budget friendly as well as permit many individuals to possess a brilliantly colored diamond. Ask your neighborhood jewelry expert if they have any kind of Fancy rubies ... either natural or color boosted diamonds. It is constantly interesting, and fun, to look at something different!

Under normal wear the irradiated and also HPHT color boosted diamonds will certainly have not a problem of the shade fading away. The only factor to consider will certainly be when you have to have any kind of sort of service done on the piece of jewelry. If this kind of color boosted diamond is exposed to too much quantities of heat it may impact the shade. The jeweler will certainly require to recognize that the ruby is a color improved ruby before any work is done and afterwards the jewelry expert will be able to pick the finest program of activity. Shade enhanced rubies are currently additionally used as the little accent diamonds around a bigger colorless diamond. There are lots of amazing items of fashion jewelry readily available with little blue, yellow, black, or eco-friendly color enhanced diamonds.

Currently that you learn about shade improved diamonds and somebody attempts to sell you on exactly what they call an all-natural fancy tinted diamond yet it is at an extremely deal rate ... you will certainly recognize that something simply does not sound ideal about the deal. A report from a revered grading lab need to accompany 100% natural Fancy colored rubies that are marketed as natural. If you take care of a trusted firm and you have actually been assured regarding exactly what you are acquiring, then you will certainly minimize the possibility of something bad taking place to you. Similar to any situation entailing an expensive acquisition of something that very few people are experienceded in, education must be a vital part of your plan. This is even much more essential if you prepare to buy a color boosted ruby. The Big 4 Cs For Loose Diamonds

Sekiu

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
