5 Tips on What To Look For When Buying Diamonds For Wedding Rings

A wedding, or an engagement in  Clearlake, is one of the most important events in every couple’s life. One of the best ways of making the experience memorable is by choosing the right ring to symbolize the love you have for one another. While most couples would like to get the most beautiful ring they can lay their hands on, budgetary restrictions can be a challenge. However, it is possible to find an ideal ring based on your budget.

For anyone looking for precious diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings in Clearlake, they should consider going about the process carefully. There are various dealers in the market, some of who may sell you fake diamonds. Here are a few useful tips on what to look for when looking for precious diamonds for engagement or wedding rings.

Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in Clearlake. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Clearlake to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in Clearlake for you engagement or wedding.

Clearlake How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

How are diamond cut grades assigned?

This is where things begin to obtain complicated. The methods made use of to quantitatively analyze the high quality of a cut vary. The way the GIA determines just what a ruby's cut quality should be, for example, differs in extremely certain means from the means other certifiers like the AGS do it. For the most parts, these companies do not disclose the specific information of the processes they use.

The shape of a ruby also makes a distinction relative to just how its cut quality is figured out. Although there are some standard criteria that continue to be the very same for any sort of diamond, the specific techniques utilized to grade a round diamond's cut are different from those utilized to grade a heart-shaped ruby's cut.

The rest of this explanation will certainly focus on rounded diamonds, as this is without a doubt one of the most typical diamond shape. One of the factors impacting the cut grade of a rounded ruby is the variety of aspects it has. Aspects are the flat, specified areas on the surface area of a ruby. The aspects on round diamonds are usually triangular. Presently, it's assumed that the ideal round diamond ought to have 33 elements on the crown (the section of the diamond that rests over the band, which itself is the best point of the ruby) and 25 on the pavilion (the lower, longer section of the diamond). When there are imperfections externally of the diamond, cutters may include extra elements in order to cover them. This causes a degradation in the general top quality of the cut.

While the aspect matter is typically agreed after as a great way of evaluating the top quality of a ruby cut, there are various other factors on which gemologists frequently disagree. Several of the various other factors made use of by some authorities in order to help figure out cut qualities consist of the elevation of the diamond's crown, the depth of the pavilion, the size of the table (the top of the crown), and also the angles of the crown as well as structure.

The American Standard criteria for rounded diamonds requires a crown height of 16.2%, pavilion depth of 43.1%, and also table size of 53% of the overall band diameter. The Ideal Fantastic standard, nevertheless, asks for 19.2% crown elevation, 40% structure depth, as well as 56.5% table diameter. While these differences might be challenging for novices to determine, they are a good illustration of the problems related to creating an easy evaluation of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some disagreements as to the exact percentages that constitute the best ruby cut, for prospective diamond customers, one of the most important point to recognize is that ruby qualifications given by companies like the AGS and GIA are reliable and purposeful. Respectable diamond vendors base the costs at which they deal rubies on the cut along with the remainder of the "four Cs." When you acquire a ruby, you do not have to stress over the understanding of what makes a great ruby cut transforming a lot that the value of your ruby will be substantially impacted.

Which ruby reduced quality represents the finest value?

Which sort of ruby is best for you mostly depends on your budget plan. For purchasers that want to acquire them, vendors usually advise rubies with the highest feasible cut qualities. Nonetheless, this could result from some self-involvement on their component.

The other 3 Cs have an influence on diamond prices also, so it could be tough to determine the precise distinction in rate in between a Perfect or Outstanding cut ruby as well as a Great cut. For casual buyers and budget-conscious investors alike, rubies with a Great or Good cut quality could represent a superb value. This is because, while they could be a lot more affordable compared to otherwise equal Perfect or Excellent cut diamonds, the visible difference in quality is very little.

At the exact same time, do not hesitate to utilize your discretion. If, for instance, you discover a diamond with an Ideal reduced score which has good scores in the various other categories as well as is still within your budget, then you should certainly consider it, as long as you're dealing with a credible supplier.

What You Should Know When Buying a Diamond Ring

Clearlake

Diamonds are naturally readily available in a very variety of shades. Most individuals know regarding anemic rubies and also GIA's color grading system that is used to identify a ruby's body shade ... you understand D, E, F, etc. This shade grading system is only used to categorize the most typical ruby body color of yellow nevertheless anytime a diamond is found in an additional color like pink, blue, green, and so on; then this diamond is described as a "" elegant diamond"".

Natural Fancy diamonds can be really pricey and often times much more expensive compared to a similar dimension anemic ruby. A great example of a Fancy diamond is the infamous 45.52 carat fancy deep blue ruby, the Hope Ruby, which is on display screen in the Smithsonian Nature Museum in Washington, DC.

A color improved ruby is a 100% natural diamond that has had its shade altered. As well as finest of all, shade enhanced rubies been available in an extremely large option of shades at very budget-friendly rates!

A little bit of background- For lots of, several years it has been popular that a ruby's color can be "" boosted"" by placing a little tinted compound on the surface of a ruby and also similar to magic ... a ruby that had an obvious yellow-colored shade would certainly change to a much more appealing near anemic diamond. Regrettably, this sort of color boosted ruby might change back to its initial body shade if this tinted substance was unintentionally removed. In even more recent years, the modern technology of color enhanced diamonds has gone very high tech. It is now feasible to completely transform the color of a diamond! These processes are considered permanent because it does remain stable when exposed to everyday typical problems. The color will certainly not fade if exposed to sunshine or be cleaned off by rough chemicals.

How is it done? The preferred end result of any one of these treatments is to have a much more valuable diamond. A less marketable ruby would be a ruby that has a reduced body color or sometimes a reduced clearness. The shade improved diamond therapy firms know if they start with a specific kind of diamond as well as procedure it for a particular amount of time that they must finish up with a particular shade but it does not always function that way. This is a science that does require some art in their procedures ... the only process that provides constant outcomes is the coating procedure.

The 3 procedures are as complies with- Refine # 1- HPHT Shade Boosted Diamonds- High Pressure/ Heat (HPHT) therapy could boost the color of certain kinds of brown rubies and also hence raise their value. General Electric has developed a procedure that virtually is a mechanical simulation of a diamond's development in nature. The color enhanced diamond will certainly be warmed up to a very heat under a very high, supported stress. Faults in the crystal structure are then reorganized leading to a change of the ruby's shade. Since the problems of HPHT are really similar to diamond's initial formation, only a well equipped laboratory will be able to favorably identify this kind of color boosted diamond. HPHT was initially made use of to turn yellowish rubies right into more marketable fancy tinted improved diamonds, now it is likewise utilized to transform some out of favor brownish rubies right into preferred anemic colored boosted rubies.

Process # 2- Irradiated Shade Improved Diamonds- OK ... do not start obtaining all excited because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% secure procedure that is very just like just what is utilized to preserve food by revealing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The shade boosted ruby process is done in a number of different methods however the outcomes are just the same. You start with a reduced color (P, Q, R, and so on) 100% all-natural ruby that has already been reduced and polished, after that it is exposed to a stream of fast electrons. Throughout this part of the procedure the diamond will certainly look to a really dark color since several of the atoms in the diamond's crystal structure have actually currently been disjointed and also this in turn has actually impacted the method light passes with the ruby. Next the diamond undergoes a controlled heating (annealing) procedure, this permits some of those atoms to move (partly repaired) in order to acquire a preferred shade.

Refine # 3- Coated Shade Boosted Diamonds- The finish on sleek diamonds describes a slim synthetic layer that modifies the shade of the ruby. The layer can either be of the preferred shade or could create a colored interference-effect. Regrettably sometimes this procedure is done to deceive a customer. It is a fairly very easy procedure to execute, it has been around for several years (although the coverings materials are far better now), as well as it does not need a lot of expensive advanced tools. Recently, I have actually seen some pink layered diamonds on the market, they are extremely appealing ... as well as certainly you would certainly have to acquire them recognizing that they have been coated as well as follow your jewelry expert's standards concerning possessing and also looking after these color enhanced diamonds. The finishing can be related to the whole of a ruby's surface, just all-time low of the ruby, or to a narrow zone near the girdle. A well-applied layer could transform the color by one or more color grade. Some layers could be removed via boiling in acid, solid cleansing solutions, or perhaps house chemicals. Often dots or bigger areas of purple or blue ink are painted on the diamond to assist neutralize a yellow-colored shade. The diamond's setup will usually cover the dots, so they are hard to see in a placed stone.

So, is a color enhanced ruby right for you? Maybe ... all-natural fancy shade diamonds can be gorgeous but they are expensive! Color boosted rubies are budget-friendly as well as enable lots of people to possess a brilliantly tinted ruby. Ask your neighborhood jewelry expert if they have any Fancy rubies ... either all-natural or shade boosted rubies. It is always fascinating, and enjoyable, to check out something different!

Under normal wear the irradiated and also HPHT shade enhanced rubies will certainly have not a problem of the color fading away. The only consideration will certainly be when you should have any kind of sort of service done on the item of precious jewelry. If this kind of color boosted diamond is exposed to extreme quantities of heat it may impact the color. The jeweler will need to recognize that the diamond is a color enhanced ruby prior to any work is done then the jeweler will certainly be able to decide on the ideal program of action. Color enhanced rubies are now additionally made use of as the little accent diamonds around a larger colorless diamond. There are numerous interesting pieces of precious jewelry available with tiny blue, yellow, black, or eco-friendly shade improved diamonds.

Currently that you understand about shade improved rubies and also a person attempts to market you on just what they call an all-natural expensive tinted diamond however it is at an incredibly deal cost ... you will understand that something simply does not appear appropriate regarding the deal. A report from a recognized grading laboratory must go along with 100% natural Fancy tinted rubies that are marketed as all-natural. If you deal with a credible company as well as you have actually been assured concerning exactly what you are acquiring, then you will certainly lessen the possibility of something poor happening to you. Just like any type of situation involving a pricey acquisition of something that not numerous individuals are well versed in, education and learning ought to be a crucial part of your plan. This is also extra vital if you plan to buy a color enhanced diamond. Bud Boland has been in the fashion jewelry business for 40 years and has done whatever from watchmaking, ruby setup, fashion jewelry making, and has been a Jeweler for virtually 35 years. He is a Graduate Jeweler from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is additionally the area where he was a Trainer. * Background of Diamonds

The first recorded diamond go back around 800 B.C. in India. Some think it even went back 6,000 years ago. The rubies were used as attractive functions and as amulets to prevent evil and provide protection in battle. Throughout the Dark Ages, rubies were even stated to be used as a clinical help. Spiritual medical professionals also informed patients that if they hold a diamond in a hand and also make the sign of the cross would certainly, it would cure as well as health problem and also recover wounds.

Diamonds came to be extra preferred throughout the 19th century as a result of exploration of diamond down payments in South Africa. This discovery leads to boosted supply, improved reducing as well as polishing techniques, as well as development in economy. In 1979, geologists found the Argyle pipe in Australia which to this date is the wealthiest ruby deposit worldwide. Argyle, considering that then, alone is accountable for providing over one third of the world's diamonds each year.

* Diamonds: Exactly how are they created?

Rubies includes an allotrope of carbons that are developed in high-pressure, high-temperature problems. Rubies are generated 90 miles under the Earth's surface at temperatures of regarding 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Rubies are developed deep within the planet and also at some point, over exceptionally long periods of time, press their method to the earth's surface, generally via volcanic eruptions.

The age of these rubies from underneath the surface area of the planet are from 1 to 3.3 billion years old! When diamonds are created and also start their climb to the planet's surface area, they experience channels where the magma from the volcano climbs to the surface area, getting diamonds along the means and also ultimately transferring them externally, where they are ultimately found and also mined.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are four distinctive characteristics that determine the value and high quality of a diamond. These are the shade, cut, clearness and carat weight. Or else called the 4 C's of a diamond. In the following, we will chat about these functions carefully.

* Color

In the last e-newsletter, we touch based on the shade of gemstones as being the most vital feature due to the truth that shade is the most apparent feature. The ideal diamond must appear clear and also anemic but this is not the situation for all diamonds. Diamonds can be available in any shade of the rainbow most usual shade is a color of yellow or brownish. The Geological Institute of The U.S.A.(GIA) have actually developed a guideline to grade ruby shade. This standard is composed of a text system that varies from the alphabet D - Z. Please see below:

D E F No Shade G H I J Virtually Colorless K L M Faintly tinted, cannot hardly be seen and typically yellow in shade N O P Q R Gently tinted, generally yellow. Can be seen with the nude eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, starts from yellow as well as advances to brown

* Clearness

The cut a diamond is identified by the ruby's proportion such as its shape, size and also depth. The cut identifies exactly what is called the diamond's "brilliance". Even if the diamond itself has best shade and clearness, with a bad cut the diamond will have a dull brilliance. This is since the cut establishes just how light journeys within the ruby. The Gemological Institute of America has actually also developed a clearness grading system to rate ruby clarity. This grading system includes Remarkable (Fl), Inside Perfect (IF), Really Very A Little Consisted Of (VV1 or VV2), Extremely A Little Included(VS1 or VS2), Somewhat Consisted Of(SI1 or SI2), and also Consisted Of(I1, I2, as well as I3). Although this system had actually been added to the ruby industry, it is not widely used. This is because of that it took a great deal of practice and training to integrate it.

* Cut

The cut a diamond is determined by the diamond's percentage such as its shape, width as well as deepness. The cut establishes just what is called the ruby's "brilliance". Even if the diamond itself has best shade as well as clearness, with a poor cut the ruby will have a plain radiance. This is because the cut determines just how light journeys within the ruby.

There are 3 kinds of cuts that could determine the ruby's sparkle. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is also deep as well as ideal cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a diamond that is also low, that light traveling via it is shed under of the rock as well as does not return right into sight. This cut makes a diamond appear lifeless and also boring. A cut that is unfathomable is a cut that is also high, that light taking a trip with it escapes via the sides and darkens the rock. An excellent cut is an excellent cut on a diamond that reflects light to the top of the rock, giving it ideal brilliance.

* Carat

As specified on the last e-newsletter, a single carat weight(ct) weighs about 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller sized carat weight rubies that consider much less compared to a carat weight, it is revealed as points (pt). Factors are 1/100 of a carat weight. Carat weight of a ruby is vital because of the truth that larger rubies are rarer compared to smaller sized ones, so generally the larger the diamond the extra costly it is. There is no standard grading system or diagram that could reveal various carat weight. This is since there are a lot of variations of rubies fit and cut, makings rocks of comparable weight, look various.

* Imitation Diamonds

Given that diamonds are one of the most valuable and rarest of all the gemstones, initiatives have been made to replicate or also improve diamonds making use of less costly choices. A great deal of times, sincere errors have actually been made and these choices or other gems such as spinel were sometimes perplexed with actual diamonds. In many cases, some deceitful individuals attempt to sell these alternatives to misfortunate customers in order to revenue. Listed below we will certainly review concerning these choices and also methods to determine them.

* Artificial Diamonds

Synthetic diamonds are diamonds that are expanded manufactured in a lab. The very first recognized situations of ruby synthesis were asserted to be documented in between 1879 - 1928, however this was never validated. It had not been up until the 1940's where study began in the USA, Sweden, Soviet Union started researching. Artificial diamonds are otherwise known as High Pressure Heat (HPHT) diamonds or Chemical Vapor Deposit (CVD) diamonds. The name of both these synthetic rubies obtains from the procedures made use of to develop them. Some of these artificial diamonds might either have better, minimal or comparable attributes than that of a ruby. Consequently, these synthetic diamonds are utilized for abrasives, reducing as well as polishing tools, and also switches in power terminals.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond materials that are used to reproduce the look as well as the shape of a diamond. The most fundamental as well as popular simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at simple view could glimmer greater than a diamond as well as it is much less dense, suggesting that a 1 carat CZ will be a lot bigger than a 1 carat ruby. Nowadays, a much more popular simulant is moissanite, which has just the same features of a diamond. These features include solidity (Moissanite-9.25 and diamond-10 in Mohs scale), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 as well as diamond -2.42) and dispersion (Moissanite -.104 and diamond -.044). This makes it tough to distinguish both at simple view and also would certainly frequently call for testers to discriminate. In the next section we will review how you can determine moissanites and also other replicas.

* Real or Counterfeit?

An old technique of recognizing diamonds is to do a scrape test. This requires scraping a ruby with another diamond which is damaging as well as is rarely used nowadays. The very best as well as most reputable way to examine for diamonds is to utilize testers that utilize thermal conductivity. These testers contain battery powered thermistors placed with a retracting copper idea. This tester works by infusing the warm into the evaluated rock then the tool determines the amount of warmth that it performs. Nevertheless thermal conductivity testers functions best to identify rubies and also its other simulants, it will certainly not help identify laboratory developed or synthetic stones. To be able to determine these, specific optical techniques are required. Laboratories use methods such as spectroscopy, microscopy and luminescence in order to identify a certain stones beginning. The ordinary individual can use loupes and microscopes to identify artificial stones. All-natural diamonds usually have minor flaws and flaws such as incorporations or some kind of foreign product, which will certainly not be found in synthetics.

Fake Or Real Ruby And Is This Right For You

Clearlake

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
