5 Tips on What To Look For When Buying Diamonds For Wedding Rings

A wedding, or an engagement in  Sterling, is one of the most important events in every couple’s life. One of the best ways of making the experience memorable is by choosing the right ring to symbolize the love you have for one another. While most couples would like to get the most beautiful ring they can lay their hands on, budgetary restrictions can be a challenge. However, it is possible to find an ideal ring based on your budget.

For anyone looking for precious diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings in Sterling, they should consider going about the process carefully. There are various dealers in the market, some of who may sell you fake diamonds. Here are a few useful tips on what to look for when looking for precious diamonds for engagement or wedding rings.

Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in Sterling. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Sterling to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in Sterling for you engagement or wedding.

Sterling How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all vendors offer ruby grading laboratory records (also known as diamond top quality records) to their consumers. So my general advice to you is to maintain your cash in your pocket when managing such jewelry experts.

Just buy a diamond involvement ring if it comes with the original diamond top quality record.

A lab report is an independent examination of the 4Cs of a loose ruby and also consists of an outlined representation of the stone's clearness features and a graphic representation of the rock's percentages. Having such a report allows you to compare rubies of various high qualities and ultimately helps you make an even more educated getting decision.

A retailer may reduce corners and not offer a lab report or an unethical seller could supply a fake one as a result of the time, difficulty as well as expenditure he'll birth to obtaining a rock rated.

Yeah - there is a price for grading a ruby (though that expense is at some point paid by the customer), plus the delivery and also insurance costs for sending the diamond to the lab. And let us not forget the opportunity cost of a jewelry expert not having the diamond in his shop available for a couple of weeks while the grading takes place.

However, a ruby rating record might additionally not be offered due to the fact that the prices to obtaining one could impact also greatly on the final cost of the ring. For instance, a 0.3 ct diamond ring costing $250 say, might cost around $75 to be graded as well as have the record number engraved on the girdle on the ruby. As you look for that perfect diamond involvement ring for your sweetheart, you'll locate that there is a hodgepodge of labs claiming to provide respectable diamond grading records. However I would only put my cash on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Lab Reports

Yes, all ruby high quality reports are not produced equivalent. Within the sector, it is an agreement that the 2 premier laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Gem Profession Lab) as well as the AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Qualification and also Assurance Laboratory) likewise offers extremely concerned records or "diamond certificates" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the toughest international credibility for self-reliance and consistency. Because of their continuous shade and also quality strictness standards, the globe's largest as well as most costly rubies have been sent out there for rating decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded brilliant diamonds.

AGS makes use of the strictest cut requirements in the industry. It uses a three-dimensional light performance metric that could quality numerous diamond forms. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is identified by the clinical community.

What is more, its Diamond High quality Paper utilizes an unique as well as proprietary 0 to 10 grading system to assess the 4 Cs - a system which is less complicated to understand than GIA's grading system. In truth, AGS also goes the added action by corresponding their 0-10 rating scale to other types of ranking. As an example, the standard VS1 diamond clearness score is a 3 on the AGS Diamond Top Quality File.

Ruby Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Diamond grading is not standard or controlled as well as therefore you may encounter tier 2 laboratories that use looser standards to the rate 1 grading labs stated above. If you acquire a diamond that has been graded by a rate 2 lab, you might finish up paying more for a minimal quality ruby. So as an example, a diamond rated a "F" in color at a rate 2 laboratory may get a G, H, or reduced shade ranking at an extra reputable laboratory. The market also marks down diamonds graded by lower recognized labs by about 15-30% or even more. So either you only purchase a diamond graded by a rate 1 lab or you approve that you may be getting a lower high quality diamond compared to just what is mentioned on the report if that diamond is rated by a minimal well-known laboratory.

2. Lots of big chain shops have significant contracts with lesser known labs with "softer" diamond grading standards. A few of these softer laboratories placed "recommended replacement worths" on the lab reports - worths which are above just what shops intends offer the rubies for. So a salesperson in a store might state to you, "Take a look at the lot you are getting below. We are marketing you this ruby involvement ring for $2500 yet the report states that the recommended replacement value is $4000." Wow - exactly what a bargain - NOT! This is why it is much better that you rely on just independent rate 1 laboratories.

Also bear in mind that reliable ruby rating reports are not assessments and do not use evaluation figures. Diamond evaluations are commonly grossly inflated and also are not something you'll desire to rely upon.

3. Ruby reports are riddled with please notes that define that absolutely nothing is "certified" or ensured and also that the labs are not answerable for errors. Actually, the GIA supplies a disclaimer of sorts on their internet site pertaining to the use of words "certify." The site claims:

"It is incorrect to state that trainees, graduates, their services, or certain gemstones are "certified" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of America does not license anybody or anything. Neither a student neither a graduate that has actually been awarded a certification or diploma, nor a gem which has been graded or identified by GIA has actually been certified by GIA".

So it is possible that you the customer is left holding the bag should an error in a record is later discovered. Courts have actually regularly ruled that vendors, not laboratories, are accountable for such mistakes. Why? Since the laboratories showed in advance that their reports couldn't be held liable.

Thankfully, there are a pair ways to offer on your own more buyer protection:

A. You could fly to India where jewelry experts offer a life time buyback plan to their consumers. Also costly to fly?

B. You could find among the 20% people jewelry experts who sell completely bonded rubies. These are rubies that are marketed with life time damage, life time trade-in and also life time buyback policies.

C. Not as good a treatment as acquiring a completely bound diamond but you might acquire a diamond that has an actual "certification" and also not a record. "Licensed diamonds do include guaranties" albeit for shorter durations.

Qualification Some vendors describe a "ruby report" as a "licensed diamond" however technically this is not deal with. From a legal point ofview, a diamond report is a just a professional viewpoint though in reality, aspects of a ruby grading record are not simply viewpoints.

For instance, a ruby's carat weight (weight) can be accurately identified along with its cut grade by measuring its optical efficiency or by describing a computer system design. A certificate on the other hand is a statement of reality - a record for which the company accepts lawful duty and also will certainly make restitution to the customer for mistakes.

Some top diamond grading laboratories provide both records and certificates. AGS provides Diamond Quality Records (non-certified records) and also Diamond Quality Certificates. Ruby Quality Certifications are prepared exclusively for AGS retail jewelers and provides guaranties from participating American Treasure Society participant stores.

GCAL accredits it's diamond grading likewise. Its 100% money-back warranty policy stands for a period of 2 years from the day on the suitable certification. This policy ensures the accuracy of the cut, color and also clearness qualities as well as the carat weight.

A report or certificate ought to will have a number on it that may or may not be engraved on a diamond. You will certainly be able to get in that number on the web site of the accrediting lab to examine a record's validity.

Aspects Of A Diamond Grading Record Diamond grading records are always progressing however specific element should stay the same. For instance, the:

The Record #. This number is given as well as videotaped in a lab's document and might or might not be inscribed on a ruby's band. You could get in the record number on a grading laboratory's web site to examine the authenticity of the ruby quality report or to obtain even more details about the diamond. Shape & Element Style: This is the overview as well as the reducing style utilized for the aspect setup. There are 3 standard aspect designs - "great cut, step cut and mixed cutting style" and also 12 standard forms that include notables such as round fantastic and also princess cut" rubies.

Measurements: This describes dimension (not weight) of a ruby. Size consists of dimensions such as length, size, weight and also size. A dimension is usually detailed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Dimensions play a massive role in exactly how a diamond sparkles.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is measured to the hundredth of a carat weight and some even supply such action to the thousandth of a carat (1.123 ct.). Carat is the most objective and also the simplest to recognize of the 4Cs because all one has to do is weight the stone. Color Grade: This informs you the level of color lack in the ruby. The less color the higher the grade.

Rubies are commonly rated from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You ought to never ever see diamond shade array such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so on) on a diamond report. You should only see shade varieties on evaluations for rocks that are mounted.

Clarity Grade: Virtually every diamond has actually inner flaws called inclusions and also exterior flaws called acnes. A diamond is graded according to the size, kind, place as well as amount of these imperfections.

Clearness grades range from Perfect (FL) - Consisted Of. Labs utilize a couple professionals to quality the quality of a ruby in order to develop a more precise reading.

Cut Quality: Much more recent diamond records include a cut grade for typical round dazzling rubies. Cut thinks about the brilliance, fire as well as scintillation of the diamond. Cut grade ranges from Excellent - Poor.

Other aspects you may encounter on a diamond report include the polish, balance, fluorescence as well as percentage. Equipped with this information, you are better able to earn an evaluation of the quality of diamond that is placed in an engagement ring.

What You Should Know When Buying a Diamond Ring

Sterling

Diamonds are naturally offered in an extremely vast array of shades. Many people know regarding colorless diamonds and GIA's shade grading system that is utilized to identify a ruby's body shade ... you know D, E, F, etc. This shade grading system is only utilized to categorize one of the most common ruby body shade of yellow however anytime a diamond is discovered in an additional color like pink, blue, eco-friendly, and so on; after that this diamond is referred to as a "" fancy diamond"".

All-natural Fancy rubies can be really expensive as well as lots of times more pricey than a comparable dimension colorless ruby. An excellent example of a Fancy ruby is the notorious 45.52 carat fancy deep blue ruby, the Hope Ruby, which is on display in the Smithsonian Natural Background Gallery in Washington, DC.

A shade enhanced diamond is a 100% all-natural ruby that has had its color changed. And also most importantly, shade enhanced rubies come in a really large option of shades at very cost effective costs!

A little bit of background- For numerous, lots of years it has been well recognized that a ruby's color might be "" enhanced"" by putting a little colored compound externally of a diamond and also similar to magic ... a diamond that had a visible yellow-colored color would alter to a much more appealing near anemic ruby. Sadly, this type of shade improved ruby might change back to its initial body shade if this tinted substance was inadvertently eliminated. In even more recent years, the modern technology of color improved rubies has actually gone exceptionally advanced. It is currently possible to totally alter the color of a diamond! These processes are considered irreversible because it does stay secure when exposed to everyday regular problems. The shade will not fade if exposed to sunshine or be cleaned off by extreme chemicals.

How is it done? The preferred result of any of these treatments is to have a much more valuable diamond. A less valuable ruby would be a diamond that has a low body color or sometimes a reduced quality. The color improved diamond therapy firms recognize if they begin with a particular kind of diamond and also procedure it for a certain amount of time that they must wind up with a certain shade but it does not always function that method. This is a science that does require some art in their processes ... the only procedure that offers consistent results is the finishing procedure.

The 3 processes are as adheres to- Refine # 1- HPHT Shade Improved Diamonds- High Stress/ Heat (HPHT) therapy could improve the color of specific sorts of brownish rubies as well as therefore boost their value. General Electric has actually established a process that practically is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's production in nature. The shade enhanced diamond will be warmed up to an extremely heat under a really high, maintained stress. Mistakes in the crystal structure are then reorganized causing an alteration of the diamond's shade. Due to the fact that the problems of HPHT are extremely much like diamond's original formation, just a well furnished laboratory will certainly be able to positively recognize this type of shade enhanced ruby. HPHT was initially made use of to transform yellowish rubies into more marketable fancy colored improved diamonds, now it is likewise used to transform some out of favor brownish rubies into even more preferable colorless tinted improved diamonds.

Process # 2- Irradiated Color Enhanced Diamonds- OK ... do not start obtaining all thrilled since you saw words irradiated! This is a 100% risk-free procedure that is really comparable to what is utilized to protect food by subjecting it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color boosted ruby process is carried out in numerous various methods yet the results are all the exact same. You begin with a low color (P, Q, R, and so on) 100% natural diamond that has actually currently been cut as well as brightened, then it is revealed to a stream of rapid electrons. Throughout this part of the procedure the ruby will certainly turn to an extremely dark shade due to the fact that several of the atoms in the ruby's crystal framework have actually currently been dislocated and this then has actually influenced the way light passes through the diamond. Next the ruby undergoes a controlled home heating (annealing) procedure, this permits several of those atoms to move (partially fixed) in order to get a desired shade.

Process # 3- Layered Shade Improved Diamonds- The finishing on polished rubies refers to a slim synthetic layer that modifies the color of the diamond. The coating could either be of the wanted shade or could cause a tinted interference-effect. Sadly sometimes this procedure is done to trick a customer. It is a reasonably very easy procedure to carry out, it has actually been around for lots of years (although the finishings materials are better currently), and also it does not need a whole lot of pricey advanced tools. Recently, I have actually seen some pink layered rubies on the marketplace, they are very eye-catching ... and certainly you would certainly need to buy them recognizing that they have been covered and also follow your jewelry expert's standards regarding having and looking after these shade enhanced diamonds. The finishing can be related to the entire of a ruby's surface area, simply all-time low of the ruby, or to a narrow zone near the band. A well-applied finish can alter the shade by several color quality. Some coatings can be eliminated with steaming in acid, solid cleaning services, or even home chemicals. Sometimes dots or bigger areas of purple or blue ink are repainted on the diamond in order to help counteract a yellow-colored shade. The ruby's setup will typically cover the dots, so they are tough to see in a placed rock.

So, is a shade enhanced ruby right for you? Perhaps ... all-natural fancy shade diamonds can be beautiful however they are pricey! Shade improved diamonds are budget-friendly as well as allow lots of people to have a vibrantly colored ruby. Ask your regional jewelry expert if they have any Fancy rubies ... either natural or shade enhanced diamonds. It is constantly intriguing, and also enjoyable, to look at something different!

Under regular wear the irradiated and also HPHT shade enhanced rubies will have not a problem of the color fading away. The only factor to consider will be when you should have any kind of sort of solution done on the item of jewelry. If this sort of shade improved diamond is subjected to too much amounts of warm it might affect the shade. The jeweler will require to recognize that the diamond is a shade boosted ruby before any work is done then the jeweler will certainly be able to choose on the very best training course of action. Color enhanced rubies are now also used as the little accent diamonds around a bigger colorless diamond. There are several amazing pieces of fashion jewelry available with tiny blue, yellow, black, or eco-friendly shade boosted diamonds.

Since you learn about shade enhanced rubies and a person attempts to sell you on just what they call a natural expensive colored ruby however it goes to an extremely deal cost ... you will understand that something just does not seem best about the offer. A record from a revered grading laboratory must go along with all natural Fancy colored rubies that are marketed as all-natural. If you deal with a trustworthy firm as well as you have been assured regarding just what you are purchasing, then you will certainly minimize the opportunity of something negative happening to you. As with any kind of situation involving an expensive acquisition of something that few people are experienceded in, education should be a crucial part of your strategy. This is even extra important if you prepare to buy a color enhanced diamond. Bud Boland has actually been in the jewelry company for 40 years and also has done whatever from watchmaking, diamond setting, jewelry making, and has actually been a Jeweler for virtually 35 years. He is a Graduate Gemologist from GIA (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.), which is also the location where he was an Instructor. He has actually taught regarding rubies to thousands of trainees from throughout the globe

Not all vendors offer diamond grading lab records (also known as ruby quality records) to their consumers. So my basic suggestions to you is to keep your cash in your pocket when managing such jewelers.

Just purchase a ruby interaction ring if it includes the original diamond quality report.

A lab record is an independent assessment of the 4Cs of a loose diamond and also includes a plotted representation of the stone's clearness attributes as well as a graphic depiction of the stone's proportions. Having such a record enables you to contrast rubies of different top qualities as well as inevitably assists you make an even more notified purchasing choice.

A retailer might cut edges and also not offer a lab record or an unethical vendor could give a fake one because of the moment, trouble and also cost he'll bear to getting a stone rated.

Yeah - there is a rate for grading a ruby (though that cost is at some point paid by the consumer), plus the shipping and insurance fees for sending the diamond to the laboratory. As well as let us not neglect the chance price of a jeweler not having the ruby in his shop for sale for a couple of weeks while the grading happens.

Nevertheless, a ruby rating report could likewise not be readily available due to the fact that the expenses to obtaining one might influence too heavily on the final cost of the ring. For example, a 0.3 ct diamond ring setting you back $250 state, might set you back around $75 to be rated and also have the report number engraved on the girdle on the ruby. As you search for that suitable diamond engagement ring for your sweetheart, you'll find that there is an alphabet soup of labs declaring to provide trustworthy diamond rating reports. However I would only put my money on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Lab Reports

Yes, all ruby high quality records are not created equivalent. Within the sector, it is an agreement that the 2 leading laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America's Gem Trade Lab) as well as the AGS (American Gem Culture Laboratories).

The GCAL (Treasure Certification and Assurance Laboratory) additionally offers very regarded reports or "ruby certifications" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the strongest worldwide online reputation for freedom and also consistency. As a result of their consistent shade as well as quality strictness standards, the globe's biggest as well as most expensive rubies have been sent there for rating years. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for round great diamonds.

AGS utilizes the strictest cut requirements in the market. It uses a three-dimensional light performance metric that can grade several diamond forms. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is identified by the clinical community.

What is even more, its Diamond Quality Document utilizes a special as well as exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to evaluate the 4 Cs - a system which is easier to understand compared to GIA's grading system. Actually, AGS even goes the added action by corresponding their 0-10 ranking scale to other types of ranking. For example, the traditional VS1 ruby clearness score is a 3 on the AGS Ruby Quality Document.

Diamond Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standardized or regulated and therefore you may come throughout tier 2 laboratories that utilize looser guidelines to the tier 1 grading labs pointed out above. If you purchase a ruby that has actually been rated by a rate 2 laboratory, you may wind up paying extra for a minimal high quality diamond. So for instance, a ruby ranked a "F" in shade at a tier 2 lab may obtain a G, H, or lower color score at a more respectable lab. The market likewise discounts rubies rated by lower well-known laboratories by concerning 15-30% or even more. So either you only buy a diamond graded by a tier 1 laboratory or you accept that you may be purchasing a minimal high quality diamond compared to exactly what is stated on the record if that diamond is graded by a lower well-known lab.

2. Lots of big store have big agreements with lower known labs with "softer" ruby grading standards. Several of these softer laboratories placed "recommended substitute worths" on the laboratory records - worths which are higher than just what shops plans sell the diamonds for. So a sales representative in a store could claim to you, "Check out the fantastic deal you are getting here. We are selling you this diamond involvement ring for $2500 but the report states that the recommended substitute value is $4000." Wow - just what a deal - NOT! This is why it is much better that you rely on just independent tier 1 labs.

Also keep in mind that trustworthy diamond rating records are not appraisals and do not offer evaluation figures. Diamond appraisals are frequently grossly filled with air as well as are not something you'll wish to count on.

3. Ruby records are riddled with please notes that specify that absolutely nothing is "certified" or guaranteed which the laboratories are not answerable for errors. In reality, the GIA uses a disclaimer of kinds on their web site pertaining to making use of the word "accredit." The website says:

"It is wrong to state that trainees, grads, their organisations, or specific gems are "accredited" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not certify any individual or anything. Neither a trainee neither a graduate who has been awarded a certification or diploma, nor a gem which has been rated or determined by GIA has actually been certified by GIA".

So it is feasible that you the consumer is left holding the bag must an inaccuracy in a record is later on found. Courts have actually regularly ruled that vendors, not labs, are accountable for such mistakes. Why? Due to the fact that the labs suggested in advance that their reports could not be held liable.

Thankfully, there are a pair methods to offer yourself more purchaser security:

A. You might fly to India where jewelry experts supply a life time buyback plan to their customers. As well expensive to fly?

B. You might discover one of the 20% people jewelers that offer completely adhered diamonds. These are diamonds that are sold with life time damage, lifetime trade-in and lifetime buyback plans.

C. Not as excellent a remedy as purchasing a fully adhered diamond however you might get a diamond that comes with an actual "certificate" and also not a report. "Licensed diamonds do come with warranties" albeit for shorter durations.

Accreditation Some sellers describe a "ruby record" as a "licensed ruby" but technically this is not fix. From a lawful perspective, a diamond report is a merely a skilled opinion though in reality, elements of a ruby rating record are not just point of views.

For instance, a ruby's carat weight (weight) can be accurately identified in addition to its cut grade by determining its optical performance or by referring to a computer system version. A certification on the various other hand is a declaration of fact - a document for which the company approves legal responsibility as well as will make restitution to the consumer for blunders.

Some leading ruby grading laboratories supply both reports as well as certificates. AGS offers Ruby Quality Papers (non-certified reports) as well as also Ruby High quality Certificates. Ruby Top quality Certificates are prepared solely for AGS retail jewelers as well as supplies guaranties from getting involved American Gem Culture participant shops.

GCAL accredits it's diamond grading additionally. Its 100% money-back assurance plan stands for a period of two years from the date on the relevant certificate. This policy ensures the accuracy of the cut, color as well as clarity grades and the carat weight.

A record or certificate ought to will certainly have a number on it that could or could not be etched on a ruby. You will certainly have the ability to get in that number on the internet site of the accrediting lab to inspect a record's validity.

Aspects Of A Diamond Grading Report Ruby grading reports are constantly developing but certain element needs to remain the exact same. For example, the:

The Report #. This number is offered and also videotaped in a laboratory's document and could or could not be etched on a ruby's band. You could get in the report number on a grading lab's website to check the authenticity of the diamond high quality report or to obtain even more info regarding the ruby. Shape & Aspect Style: This is the summary and the reducing design used for the aspect setup. There are 3 standard aspect styles - "brilliant cut, action cut as well as combined cutting style" as well as 12 fundamental shapes which include notables such as rounded brilliant and also princess cut" diamonds.

Dimensions: This describes size (not weight) of a diamond. Dimension includes dimensions such as size, size, weight as well as diameter. A measurement is commonly detailed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Dimensions play a significant function in exactly how a ruby sparkles.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is measured to the hundredth of a carat and some also offer such action to the thousandth of a carat (1.123 ct.). Carat is one of the most objective and the simplest to understand of the 4Cs due to the fact that all one needs to do is weight the rock. Color Quality: This tells you the level of color absence in the ruby. The much less shade the greater the grade.

Diamonds are typically graded from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You should never ever see diamond shade array such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so on) on a ruby report. You ought to only see color varieties on assessments for stones that are installed.

Clearness Quality: Basically every ruby has interior flaws called inclusions and also external blemishes called acnes. A diamond is graded according to the dimension, kind, place and amount of these problems.

Clearness grades range from Flawless (FL) - Included. Labs make use of a couple specialists to quality the clearness of a ruby in order to think of a more accurate reading.

Cut Grade: More current ruby records include a cut grade for typical round dazzling diamonds. Cut takes into consideration the brilliance, fire and also scintillation of the ruby. Cut quality varies from Excellent - Poor.

Other components you may discover on a diamond report include the gloss, balance, fluorescence and proportion. Equipped with this details, you are better able to earn an evaluation of the quality of diamond that is installed in an involvement ring.

These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. Sterling How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.

How You Can Acquire Diamonds When Getting Wholesale.

Sterling
