If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

University Place How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all vendors give ruby grading laboratory records (aka diamond quality reports) to their customers. So my basic guidance to you is to keep your loan in your pocket when managing such jewelry experts.

Only buy a diamond involvement ring if it has the initial diamond quality record.

A laboratory report is an independent assessment of the 4Cs of a loosened diamond as well as includes a plotted layout of the rock's quality attributes as well as a graphic depiction of the stone's percentages. Having such a report permits you to compare diamonds of various qualities and eventually assists you make a more informed buying choice.

A store could reduce edges and also not provide a laboratory report or an unethical vendor could provide a phony one as a result of the moment, problem as well as expenditure he'll birth to obtaining a stone graded.

Yeah - there is a cost for rating a diamond (though that price is ultimately paid by the customer), plus the delivery and also insurance fees for sending out the ruby to the lab. And allow us not fail to remember the chance expense of a jewelry expert not having the diamond in his store for sale for a couple of weeks while the grading takes area.

However, a ruby grading record might additionally not be available since the prices to obtaining one may affect too greatly on the last price of the ring. For instance, a 0.3 ct diamond ring costing $250 claim, could cost around $75 to be graded and also have the record number inscribed on the band on the diamond. As you look for that ideal diamond involvement ring for your sweetie, you'll find that there is an alphabet soup of laboratories declaring to provide credible ruby rating reports. However I would just place my money on ...

The Premier Ruby Grading Laboratory Information

Yes, all ruby high quality records are not developed equal. Within the industry, it is an agreement that both premier laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Treasure Profession Laboratory) and also the AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Treasure Accreditation as well as Assurance Laboratory) likewise uses very pertained to records or "diamond certificates" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the strongest worldwide online reputation for independence as well as consistency. Due to their consistent color and also clarity strictness standards, the world's biggest and most expensive rubies have been sent there for rating years. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for round brilliant diamonds.

AGS utilizes the strictest cut criteria in the market. It utilizes a three-dimensional light performance metric that can quality several diamond shapes. In truth, it is the only cut grading system that is acknowledged by the clinical neighborhood.

Just what is even more, its Ruby Quality Document makes use of an unique as well as exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to evaluate the 4 Cs - a system which is much easier to understand compared to GIA's grading system. In reality, AGS even goes the extra action by corresponding their 0-10 rating scale to other kinds of ranking. As an example, the traditional VS1 ruby quality rating is a 3 on the AGS Ruby High Quality File.

Ruby Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Diamond grading is not standardized or regulated and also hence you might come across tier 2 laboratories that employ looser guidelines to the tier 1 grading laboratories discussed over. If you acquire a ruby that has actually been rated by a tier 2 laboratory, you could wind up paying more for a minimal top quality ruby. So as an example, a ruby rated a "F" in color at a tier 2 laboratory might obtain a G, H, or lower color score at a much more reputable laboratory. The sector additionally discounts rubies graded by lower well-known labs by regarding 15-30% or more. So either you only purchase a diamond graded by a rate 1 lab or you accept that you could be getting a lower quality ruby than what is stated on the report if that diamond is rated by a lower recognized laboratory.

2. Numerous huge store have huge agreements with lower known laboratories with "softer" ruby grading guidelines. Some of these softer labs placed "suggested substitute values" on the laboratory records - values which are higher than what shops plans sell the diamonds for. So a salesman in a store might state to you, "Check out the good deal you are getting right here. We are marketing you this ruby involvement ring for $2500 however the report says that the recommended substitute worth is $4000." Wow - just what a bargain - NOT! This is why it is better that you rely on only independent rate 1 laboratories.

Likewise remember that reputable diamond rating reports are not evaluations and also don't offer assessment figures. Diamond assessments are frequently blatantly filled with air as well as are not something you'll intend to rely upon.

3. Ruby records are riddled with please notes that specify that absolutely nothing is "accredited" or guaranteed as well as that the laboratories are not responsible for errors. In truth, the GIA uses a disclaimer of types on their site relating to making use of the word "license." The website says:

"It is wrong to state that pupils, grads, their services, or particular gemstones are "certified" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not license any individual or anything. Neither a trainee nor a grad that has actually been granted a certification or diploma, nor a treasure which has been graded or recognized by GIA has been certified by GIA".

So it is possible that you the consumer is left holding the bag ought to an inaccuracy in a report is later uncovered. Courts have actually regularly ruled that vendors, not laboratories, are accountable for such mistakes. Why? Due to the fact that the labs indicated beforehand that their reports could not be held accountable.

Thankfully, there are a pair methods to give yourself a lot more buyer defense:

A. You can fly to India where jewelry experts use a lifetime buyback plan to their clients. Too costly to fly?

B. You can find among the 20% of US jewelry experts who market completely bound diamonds. These are rubies that are sold with life time damage, life time trade-in as well as life time buyback policies.

C. Not as good a remedy as acquiring a fully bound ruby yet you could acquire a ruby that features a real "certification" and also not a record. "Licensed rubies do have warranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Certification Some sellers describe a "diamond report" as a "certified ruby" however technically this is not remedy. From a legal viewpoint, a ruby record is a simply an experienced point of view though in actuality, elements of a ruby grading report are not just point of views.

As an example, a diamond's carat weight (weight) could be precisely identified along with its cut quality by determining its optical effectiveness or by referring to a computer design. A certification on the other hand is a statement of fact - a record for which the provider approves lawful obligation as well as will make restitution to the customer for blunders.

Some top ruby grading labs offer both records and also certificates. AGS provides Diamond Top quality Records (non-certified reports) as well as also Ruby Quality Certificates. Diamond Quality Certificates are ready solely for AGS retail jewelry experts and also provides guaranties from participating American Gem Society participant shops.

GCAL accredits it's diamond grading likewise. Its 100% money-back guarantee policy is legitimate for a period of 2 years from the date on the applicable certification. This policy makes sure the precision of the cut, color and clarity grades and the carat weight.

A record or certificate need to will certainly have a number on it that could or could not be inscribed on a diamond. You will certainly have the ability to enter that number on the site of the certifying laboratory to check a record's validity.

Elements Of A Diamond Grading Record Ruby rating reports are always developing however specific component needs to stay the exact same. For example, the:

The Report #. This number is provided and recorded in a laboratory's document and also could or could not be etched on a diamond's band. You could go into the record number on a grading lab's web site to check the credibility of the diamond high quality record or to obtain more information about the ruby. Shape & Aspect Design: This is the outline and also the reducing style made use of for the aspect arrangement. There are 3 standard aspect styles - "great cut, step cut and also blended cutting style" and 12 fundamental forms which include notables such as rounded great and also princess cut" diamonds.

Dimensions: This describes dimension (not weight) of a ruby. Dimension consists of measurements such as size, width, weight and also size. A dimension is normally provided to the hundredth of a millimeter. Measurements play a massive duty in how a diamond glows.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is measured to the hundredth of a carat weight and some also supply such action to the thousandth of a carat weight (1.123 ct.). Carat is the most objective as well as the most convenient to comprehend of the 4Cs due to the fact that all one needs to do is weight the rock. Color Grade: This tells you the level of shade lack in the ruby. The less shade the greater the grade.

Rubies are normally graded from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the diamond. You ought to never see ruby color array such as (G-H, I-J-K, and more) on a ruby record. You need to just see shade arrays on assessments for stones that are installed.

Clearness Quality: Basically every ruby has internal imperfections called inclusions and also external blemishes called blemishes. A diamond is rated according to the dimension, type, location as well as quantity of these problems.

Quality grades vary from Perfect (FL) - Consisted Of. Labs use a couple professionals to grade the clearness of a diamond in order to create a more accurate reading.

Cut Grade: Extra current ruby records include a cut grade for typical round brilliant diamonds. Cut considers the radiance, fire and scintillation of the ruby. Cut quality varies from Superb - Poor.

Various other elements you might discover on a ruby record include the polish, proportion, fluorescence as well as proportion. Equipped with this information, you are better able making an assessment of the top quality of diamond that is mounted in an engagement ring.

Not all sellers give diamond grading lab reports (aka diamond top quality reports) to their customers. So my general recommendations to you is to keep your cash in your pocket when handling such jewelers.

Just acquire a ruby interaction ring if it has the original ruby top quality report.

A lab report is an independent examination of the 4Cs of a loose diamond and consists of an outlined representation of the stone's clarity qualities as well as a visuals representation of the rock's percentages. Having such a report permits you to contrast rubies of different high qualities as well as eventually assists you make a more notified buying decision.

A retailer might cut corners and also not give a laboratory record or an unscrupulous vendor may provide a phony one because of the moment, trouble and cost he'll bear to obtaining a stone rated.

Yeah - there is a rate for grading a diamond (though that expense is eventually paid by the consumer), plus the shipping as well as insurance coverage fees for sending the diamond to the laboratory. And allow us not neglect the chance cost of a jewelry expert not having the diamond in his store offer for sale for a few weeks while the grading occurs.

Nonetheless, a ruby rating record may likewise not be offered because the expenses to obtaining one may impact as well greatly on the final price of the ring. For instance, a 0.3 ct diamond ring costing $250 state, might set you back around $75 to be graded and have the record number inscribed on the girdle on the ruby. As you look for that perfect diamond engagement ring for your sweetheart, you'll find that there is an alphabet soup of laboratories asserting to supply credible ruby rating records. Yet I would only place my money on ...

The Premier Ruby Grading Lab Reports

Yes, all ruby high quality records are not developed equal. Within the market, it is a consensus that the 2 leading laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Gem Profession Lab) and the AGS (American Treasure Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Treasure Qualification and also Assurance Laboratory) likewise uses extremely regarded records or "ruby certifications" as they are referred to by GCAL. The GIA has the strongest worldwide credibility for independence and also uniformity. Due to their constant shade as well as clarity strictness guidelines, the globe's largest and most costly rubies have actually been sent there for rating decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL added a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded dazzling diamonds.

AGS makes use of the most strict cut standards in the market. It makes use of a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that could quality numerous ruby shapes. Actually, it is the only cut grading system that is acknowledged by the scientific area.

Exactly what is even more, its Ruby Top quality Document makes use of an one-of-a-kind and exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to review the 4 Cs - a system which is simpler to understand compared to GIA's grading system. Actually, AGS even goes the added step by relating their 0-10 rating range to various other forms of score. For instance, the standard VS1 ruby clearness score is a 3 on the AGS Ruby Quality Document.

So as an example, a diamond ranked a "F" in shade at a rate 2 lab could get a G, H, or lower shade score at a more reliable lab. The sector additionally marks down rubies rated by lower known labs by regarding 15-30% or even more. So either you just acquire a ruby graded by a rate 1 laboratory or you approve that you may be buying a minimal high quality ruby compared to exactly what is specified on the report if that ruby is rated by a minimal recognized laboratory.

2. Several huge store have massive agreements with lower known laboratories with "softer" ruby grading guidelines. A few of these softer laboratories put "suggested replacement values" on the laboratory reports - values which are higher compared to just what stores plans market the diamonds for. So a sales representative in a store could state to you, "Take a look at the large amount you are obtaining below. We are selling you this diamond involvement ring for $2500 yet the report states that the suggested substitute worth is $4000." Wow - just what a bargain - NOT! This is why it is much better that you trust only independent tier 1 labs.

Additionally remember that reliable diamond grading records are not appraisals and don't provide assessment numbers. Ruby evaluations are usually grossly inflated and are not something you'll wish to count on.

Spiritual medical professionals even informed clients that if they hold a ruby in a hand as well as make the indication of the cross would certainly, it would certainly cure and also health problem and also heal wounds.

Diamonds ended up being extra prominent during the 19th century as a result of discovery of diamond deposits in South Africa. This discovery brings about increased supply, enhanced reducing and polishing methods, and also growth in economic situation. In 1979, geologists found the Argyle pipe in Australia which to this date is the wealthiest ruby deposit on the planet. Argyle, because after that, alone is responsible for supplying over one third of the globe's rubies yearly.

* Diamonds: How are they created?

Rubies contains an allotrope of carbons that are created in high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. Rubies are created 90 miles under the Earth's surface area at temperature levels of regarding 2200 levels Fahrenheit. Rubies are developed deep within the planet and at some point, over exceptionally extended periods of time, push their way to the planet's surface area, generally through volcanic eruptions.

The age of these diamonds from beneath the surface of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years old! When diamonds are formed and also start their ascent to the earth's surface area, they go through channels where the lava from the volcano climbs to the surface area, getting diamonds along the means and eventually depositing them externally, where they are eventually located and also mined.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are 4 distinctive qualities that identify the value and also high quality of a ruby. These are the color, cut, clarity and also carat weight. Otherwise referred to as the 4 C's of a diamond. In the following, we will certainly discuss these functions in detail.

* Color

In the last e-newsletter, we touch based on the shade of gems as being one of the most vital function as a result of the reality that color is one of the most obvious feature. The perfect diamond should appear clear and also colorless however this is not the situation for all rubies. Diamonds could can be found in any kind of color of the rainbow most usual color is a color of yellow or brown. The Geological Institute of The U.S.A.(GIA) have devised a standard to quality ruby shade. This standard contains a lettering system that varies from the alphabet D - Z. Please see below:

D E F No Color G H I J Virtually Colorless K L M Faintly colored, can't hardly be seen and usually yellow in color N O P Q R Lightly tinted, generally yellow. Could be seen with the naked eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, begins with yellow and also proceeds to brownish

* Clarity

The cut a diamond is established by the diamond's percentage such as its shape, width and also depth. The cut identifies just what is called the ruby's "radiance". Also if the diamond itself has best color and also clearness, with an inadequate cut the ruby will have a dull sparkle. This is due to the fact that the cut determines exactly how light trips within the diamond. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. has additionally developed a clearness grading system to rate ruby quality. This grading system includes Perfect (Fl), Inside Remarkable (IF), Extremely Really A Little Included (VV1 or VV2), Very Somewhat Included(VS1 or VS2), A Little Included(SI1 or SI2), as well as Consisted Of(I1, I2, and also I3). Although this system had actually been added to the ruby sector, it is not extensively utilized. This is due to that it took a great deal of practice and training to incorporate it.

* Cut

The cut a diamond is identified by the diamond's percentage such as its shape, width and deepness. The cut determines just what is called the ruby's "brilliance". Even if the ruby itself has excellent color as well as quality, with a bad cut the ruby will certainly have a dull brilliance. This is since the cut determines just how light trips within the ruby.

There are 3 sorts of cuts that could identify the ruby's sparkle. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is unfathomable and ideal cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a ruby that is too reduced, that light traveling via it is shed under of the rock and also does not come back into sight. This cut makes a ruby appear lifeless as well as plain. A cut that is too deep is a cut that is expensive, that light traveling through it runs away through the sides and darkens the rock. An optimal cut is an ideal cut on a diamond that mirrors light to the top of the rock, giving it perfect radiance.

* Carat weight

As mentioned on the last e-newsletter, a single carat(ct) considers regarding 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller carat diamonds that weigh less than a carat, it is expressed as factors (pt). Points are 1/100 of a carat weight. Carat weight of a ruby is essential due to that larger diamonds are rarer than smaller sized ones, so essentially the larger the diamond the much more pricey it is. There is no typical grading system or layout that can show different carat weight. This is since there are numerous variations of rubies fit and cut, which makes stones of similar weight, look various.

* Replica Diamonds

Because diamonds are the most useful and rarest of all the gems, efforts have actually been made to duplicate and even enhance diamonds using cheaper alternatives. A great deal of times, truthful mistakes have been made and these alternatives or other gemstones such as spinel were in some cases perplexed with real rubies. In many cases, some deceitful people aim to sell these choices to misfortunate buyers in order to profit. Listed below we will certainly review concerning these choices as well as ways to recognize them.

* Artificial Diamonds

Synthetic diamonds are diamonds that are grown made in a lab. The initial known situations of ruby synthesis were declared to be recorded between 1879 - 1928, but this was never ever validated. It had not been until the 1940's where research started in the United States, Sweden, Soviet Union started researching. Artificial diamonds are otherwise referred to as High Stress Heat (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) diamonds. The name of both these synthetic rubies stems from the procedures utilized to create them. A few of these artificial diamonds can either have greater, lower or similar attributes than that of a ruby. Consequently, these artificial diamonds are used for abrasives, cutting and also brightening devices, as well as changes in power stations.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond compounds that are used to replicate the appearance as well as the shape of a ruby. One of the most standard and popular simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at plain sight could shimmer even more compared to a ruby and it is much less thick, implying that a 1 carat weight CZ will be a lot larger compared to a 1 carat weight diamond. Nowadays, a much more prominent simulant is moissanite, which has just the same attributes of a ruby. These characteristics include firmness (Moissanite-9.25 and diamond-10 in Mohs range), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 and also ruby -2.42) and diffusion (Moissanite -.104 as well as ruby -.044). This makes it hard to set apart both at simple view and would typically call for testers to inform the difference. In the following area we will discuss the best ways to recognize moissanites and also other replicas.

* Genuine or Counterfeit?

An old method of determining diamonds is to do a scratch examination. This requires scraping a ruby with another ruby which is devastating and also is seldom utilized nowadays. The most effective and most reliable means to check for rubies is to make use of testers that use thermal conductivity. Fake Or Actual Diamond And Also Is This Right For You

University Place

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification
