The Big 4 Cs For Loose Diamonds

Just how are ruby cut grades assigned?

This is where points begin to get complicated. The techniques utilized to quantitatively analyze the high quality of a cut vary. The way the GIA determines just what a ruby's cut quality need to be, for instance, varies in extremely specific means from the way various other certifiers like the AGS do it. In many instances, these companies do not divulge the exact details of the procedures they use.

The shape of a diamond likewise makes a difference with regard to how its cut quality is established. Although there are some standard standards that stay the same for any type of diamond, the exact methods utilized to grade a round diamond's cut are various from those utilized to quality a heart-shaped ruby's cut.

The remainder of this description will focus on round rubies, as this is by much the most usual ruby shape. One of the variables affecting the cut grade of a round ruby is the number of elements it has. Elements are the flat, defined locations externally of a diamond. The aspects on round rubies are generally triangular. Presently, it's assumed that the suitable round diamond ought to have 33 aspects on the crown (the area of the diamond that sits above the girdle, which itself is the best factor of the ruby) and also 25 on the structure (the reduced, longer section of the diamond). When there are imperfections externally of the ruby, cutters may include extra facets in order to cover them. This causes a destruction in the general high quality of the cut.

While the aspect count is normally set as a great way of judging the high quality of a ruby cut, there are various other factors on which jewelers often differ. A few of the other factors used by some authorities to help determine cut qualities include the height of the diamond's crown, the depth of the structure, the diameter of the table (the top of the crown), and also the angles of the crown and also pavilion.

The American Criterion standard for rounded rubies calls for a crown height of 16.2%, structure depth of 43.1%, and also table size of 53% of the total band size. The Perfect Dazzling benchmark, nevertheless, requires 19.2% crown height, 40% pavilion depth, and 56.5% table size. While these differences might be challenging for beginners to discern, they are a good image of the difficulties linked with developing an easy evaluation of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some disagreements about the exact proportions that comprise the excellent ruby cut, for potential diamond buyers, the most vital point to recognize is that diamond qualifications supplied by organizations like the AGS as well as GIA are credible as well as purposeful. Reliable ruby vendors base the costs at which they deal rubies on the cut along with the remainder of the "4 Cs." When you purchase a ruby, you do not need to bother with the understanding of just what makes a good diamond cut changing so a lot that the value of your ruby will be substantially influenced.

Which ruby reduced quality stands for the best value?

Which type of ruby is best for you greatly depends on your budget. For purchasers that want to purchase them, suppliers typically suggest rubies with the highest possible cut grades. Nevertheless, this might be due to some self-involvement on their part.

The various other three Cs have an influence on ruby rates also, so it can be challenging to determine the exact distinction in price between a Suitable or Outstanding cut ruby and an Extremely Great cut. For informal purchasers and budget-conscious capitalists alike, rubies with an Extremely Excellent or Excellent cut grade could stand for a superb worth. This is because, while they could be extra cost effective than or else comparable Suitable or Excellent cut rubies, the noticeable difference in quality is minimal.

At the same time, don't hesitate to utilize your discernment. If, for instance, you stumble upon a ruby with a Suitable reduced ranking which has good rankings in the various other classifications as well as is still within your budget, after that you should certainly consider it, as long as you're handling a reputable vendor.

Sterling

Diamonds are naturally readily available in a very wide variety of shades. The majority of people learn about colorless diamonds as well as GIA's color grading system that is used to classify a diamond's body color ... you know D, E, F, and so on. This color grading system is only utilized to classify the most typical diamond body shade of yellow however anytime a ruby is discovered in an additional shade like pink, blue, eco-friendly, etc.; after that this ruby is referred to as a "" elegant ruby"".

All-natural Fancy rubies could be extremely expensive and also numerous times a lot more costly than a similar size colorless ruby. A great instance of a Fancy diamond is the notorious 45.52 carat weight elegant deep blue diamond, the Hope Diamond, which gets on screen in the Smithsonian Nature Gallery in Washington, DC.

A shade boosted ruby is a 100% all-natural diamond that has actually had its shade changed. And ideal of all, color improved diamonds been available in an extremely vast selection of colors at really affordable rates!

A little bit of background- For lots of, numerous years it has actually been well understood that a diamond's color could be "" enhanced"" by putting a little tinted material on the surface of a diamond and much like magic ... a ruby that had an obvious yellow-colored shade would certainly transform to a much more eye-catching near anemic diamond. Regrettably, this kind of shade enhanced ruby can change back to its original body shade if this colored material was accidentally removed. In more recent years, the innovation of shade boosted diamonds has actually gone exceptionally advanced. It is now feasible to completely alter the color of a ruby! These processes are considered permanent due to the fact that it does continue to be steady when subjected to everyday typical conditions. The color will certainly not discolor if exposed to sunshine or be washed off by harsh chemicals.

Just how is it done? The preferred outcome of any one of these treatments is to have an extra marketable diamond. A much less marketable diamond would certainly be a diamond that has a low body color or in some cases a reduced quality. The shade boosted ruby therapy business know if they start with a specific sort of diamond and also process it for a certain quantity of time that they must wind up with a particular color but it does not always function by doing this. This is a scientific research that does need some art in their processes ... the only process that offers consistent results is the finishing process.

The three procedures are as complies with- Refine # 1- HPHT Shade Improved Diamonds- High Stress/ High Temperature (HPHT) treatment can boost the shade of certain kinds of brownish diamonds and therefore boost their value. General Electric has established a process that practically is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's creation in nature. The shade boosted ruby will certainly be warmed up to a really high temperature level under a very high, maintained pressure. Mistakes in the crystal framework are after that repositioned resulting in a change of the diamond's color. Because the problems of HPHT are really much like ruby's initial development, just a well furnished laboratory will have the ability to favorably determine this kind of shade enhanced ruby. HPHT was initially used to turn yellow-colored rubies right into more valuable fancy colored improved rubies, today it is also utilized to change some unpopular brown diamonds into preferred anemic colored boosted diamonds.

Refine # 2- Irradiated Color Boosted Diamonds- OK ... do not start obtaining all excited because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% risk-free process that is really similar to exactly what is used to maintain food by revealing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color enhanced diamond process is done in several different methods however the outcomes are all the same. You start with a low color (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% natural diamond that has already been reduced and also brightened, then it is exposed to a stream of quick electrons. During this component of the procedure the ruby will certainly count on a really dark color due to the fact that several of the atoms in the ruby's crystal framework have actually now been dislocated and also this subsequently has influenced the way light go through the ruby. Next the diamond undergoes a controlled home heating (annealing) process, this permits some of those atoms to move (partly fixed) in order to obtain a wanted shade.

Refine # 3- Coated Color Improved Diamonds- The layer on sleek diamonds refers to a thin man-made layer that changes the shade of the diamond. The coating could either be of the wanted color or could create a tinted interference-effect. However sometimes this process is done to trick a purchaser. It is a reasonably easy procedure to do, it has actually been around for several years (although the layers materials are better currently), and also it does not call for a whole lot of costly high technology equipment. Lately, I've seen some pink coated rubies on the marketplace, they are very attractive ... as well as obviously you would certainly need to buy them understanding that they have been layered and follow your jewelry expert's standards regarding possessing and also looking after these color boosted diamonds. The layer could be used to the entire of a ruby's surface area, simply all-time low of the ruby, or to a narrow area near the girdle. A well-applied layer could transform the shade by one or even more shade quality. Some coatings could be removed via steaming in acid, solid cleansing remedies, and even household chemicals. Occasionally dots or bigger locations of purple or blue ink are paintinged on the diamond to help neutralize a yellow-colored shade. The ruby's setting will generally cover the dots, so they are challenging to see in an installed rock.

So, is a shade improved ruby right for you? Perhaps ... all-natural expensive shade diamonds can be lovely yet they are expensive! Shade boosted rubies are budget-friendly as well as permit numerous people to have a vibrantly colored diamond. Ask your neighborhood jewelry expert if they have any kind of Fancy diamonds ... either natural or color boosted diamonds. It is constantly interesting, and also enjoyable, to consider something different!

Under typical wear the irradiated and HPHT shade enhanced rubies will certainly have no problems of the shade fading away. The only consideration will be when you have to have any kind of service done on the piece of precious jewelry. If this kind of color boosted diamond is subjected to too much amounts of heat it could affect the color. The jewelry expert will should recognize that the diamond is a shade enhanced ruby before any work is done and after that the jeweler will have the ability to make a decision on the very best course of activity. Shade improved diamonds are currently likewise made use of as the tiny accent rubies around a larger anemic ruby. There are numerous exciting pieces of fashion jewelry offered with little blue, yellow, black, or eco-friendly shade boosted diamonds.

Now that you learn about color boosted diamonds and someone aims to offer you on just what they call a natural elegant tinted diamond but it is at an incredibly deal price ... you will recognize that something simply does not sound right concerning the deal. A record from a recognized grading lab should accompany natural Fancy tinted rubies that are marketed as all-natural. If you manage a credible firm and you have been guaranteed about exactly what you are purchasing, after that you will certainly lessen the possibility of something negative happening to you. Similar to any situation entailing an expensive acquisition of something that very few individuals are experienceded in, education should be an important part of your plan. This is much more important if you intend to buy a shade improved ruby. Bud Boland has actually been in the jewelry service for 40 years as well as has actually done whatever from watchmaking, diamond setting, precious jewelry making, and has been a Jeweler for virtually 35 years. He is a Graduate Jeweler from GIA (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.), which is additionally the location where he was a Trainer. There are four distinctive features that determine the value as well as high quality of a diamond. These are the shade, cut, clearness and also carat. Or else called the 4 C's of a ruby. In the complying with, we will certainly speak about these features in information.

* Color

In the last e-newsletter, we touch based on the shade of gems as being the most crucial function as a result of the fact that shade is the most noticeable feature. The excellent ruby should appear clear and also colorless but this is not the situation for all diamonds. Rubies could be available in any type of color of the rainbow most common color is a color of yellow or brown. The Geological Institute of The U.S.A.(GIA) have designed a standard to grade ruby color. This standard contains a lettering system that varies from the alphabet D - Z. Please see below:

D E F No Shade G H I J Nearly Colorless K L M Faintly colored, can not rarely be seen as well as usually yellow in color N O P Q R Lightly tinted, normally yellow. Can be seen with the nude eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, begins with yellow and also proceeds to brownish

* Quality

The cut a diamond is identified by the ruby's proportion such as its form, size and depth. The cut identifies just what is called the diamond's "sparkle". Even if the diamond itself has excellent color and quality, with a poor cut the ruby will certainly have a boring brilliance. This is due to the fact that the cut determines exactly how light journeys within the ruby. The Gemological Institute of America has actually likewise devised a clarity grading system to rank ruby clarity. This grading system includes Perfect (Fl), Internally Flawless (IF), Very Really Somewhat Included (VV1 or VV2), Very A Little Included(VS1 or VS2), Slightly Consisted Of(SI1 or SI2), as well as Included(I1, I2, and also I3). Although this system had been added to the diamond industry, it is not widely utilized. This is due to the truth that it took a great deal of technique as well as training to incorporate it.

* Cut

The cut a ruby is determined by the diamond's proportion such as its form, size and depth. The cut establishes what is called the diamond's "sparkle". Even if the diamond itself has excellent shade and quality, with a bad cut the ruby will certainly have a boring radiance. This is due to the fact that the cut figures out how light travels within the diamond.

There are 3 sorts of cuts that could establish the ruby's sparkle. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is as well deep and also excellent cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a ruby that is also low, that light traveling through it is lost under of the rock and does not return right into view. This cut makes a diamond show up drab and also dull. A cut that is as well deep is a cut that is expensive, that light traveling via it runs away with the sides as well as dims the stone. An ideal cut is an excellent cut on a diamond that shows light to the top of the rock, offering it best sparkle.

* Carat

As stated on the last e-newsletter, a single carat(ct) evaluates regarding 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller sized carat diamonds that evaluate much less than a carat weight, it is revealed as factors (pt). Factors are 1/100 of a carat. Carat weight of a ruby is essential due to that larger diamonds are rarer compared to smaller sized ones, so primarily the larger the diamond the extra costly it is. There is no standard grading system or representation that could reveal various carat weight. This is due to the fact that there are many variants of diamonds fit as well as cut, that makes stones of similar weight, look different.

* Replica Diamonds

Considering that rubies are the most important and also rarest of all the gems, efforts have actually been made to replicate or also improve diamonds using less costly choices. A lot of times, honest mistakes have actually been made and these options or various other gems such as spinel were occasionally confused with real diamonds. In many cases, some unethical people aim to market these alternatives to misfortunate buyers in order to revenue. Listed below we will certainly go over concerning these choices and also ways to recognize them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

Artificial diamonds are rubies that are grown manufactured in a lab. The initial well-known instances of diamond synthesis were declared to be documented in between 1879 - 1928, yet this was never validated. It had not been till the 1940's where study began in the USA, Sweden, Soviet Union started investigating. Artificial diamonds are otherwise referred to as High Pressure High Temperature Level (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) diamonds. The name of both these synthetic rubies stems from the processes used to develop them. Several of these artificial diamonds can either have better, minimal or comparable features compared to that of a ruby. Therefore, these synthetic diamonds are utilized for abrasives, cutting and also polishing tools, and also changes in power terminals.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond materials that are used to reproduce the appearance and also also the shape of a ruby. The most basic as well as popular simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at ordinary sight can glimmer greater than a diamond as well as it is less thick, suggesting that a 1 carat CZ will certainly be much bigger than a 1 carat weight ruby. Nowadays, a much more prominent simulant is moissanite, which has just the same qualities of a ruby. These qualities include solidity (Moissanite-9.25 and diamond-10 in Mohs scale), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 as well as diamond -2.42) as well as dispersion (Moissanite -.104 and also ruby -.044). This makes it hard to distinguish the 2 at simple view and also would certainly often need testers to discriminate. In the next area we will go over ways to determine moissanites and also other imitations.

* Real or Fake?

An old technique of recognizing rubies is to do a scrape test. This needs scraping a diamond with another diamond which is damaging and also is hardly ever made use of nowadays. The ideal as well as most trustworthy way to check for diamonds is to utilize testers that make use of thermal conductivity. These testers consist of battery powered thermistors installed with a retractable copper suggestion. This tester works by infusing the warm onto the checked rock then the gadget determines the amount of warmth that it conducts. Nonetheless thermal conductivity testers works best to distinguish diamonds as well as its other simulants, it will not assist differentiate laboratory developed or artificial stones. To be able to identify these, specific optical strategies are required. Laboratories make use of techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy and also luminescence in order to establish a certain rocks origin. The typical person could use loupes and microscopic lens to differentiate artificial rocks. Natural diamonds generally have minor blemishes and also flaws such as inclusions or some kind of foreign product, which will not be discovered in synthetics.

What You Need To Know When Buying a Diamond Ring

How are diamond cut qualities appointed?

This is where points start to get complicated. The methods utilized to quantitatively evaluate the quality of a cut differ. The method the GIA identifies just what a diamond's cut quality ought to be, for instance, differs in extremely details ways from the means various other certifiers like the AGS do it. In the majority of cases, these organizations do not disclose the exact information of the procedures they utilize.

The form of a diamond likewise makes a distinction relative to how its cut quality is determined. Although there are some fundamental criteria that stay the exact same for any kind of diamond, the specific methods utilized to grade a round ruby's cut are various from those used to quality a heart-shaped ruby's cut.

The rest of this explanation will certainly focus on rounded rubies, as this is by far the most common ruby form. Among the factors impacting the cut quality of a rounded diamond is the number of aspects it has. Elements are the level, defined locations externally of a diamond. The aspects on round diamonds are typically triangular. Currently, it's assumed that the ideal round diamond ought to have 33 facets on the crown (the section of the diamond that rests above the band, which itself is the best factor of the ruby) as well as 25 on the pavilion (the reduced, much longer area of the diamond). When there are flaws externally of the diamond, cutters may include added aspects in order to obscure them. This results in a degradation in the overall high quality of the cut.

While the facet count is generally decideded upon as a great way of evaluating the top quality of a ruby cut, there are various other points on which jewelers regularly differ. Some of the various other elements made use of by some authorities to assist identify cut qualities consist of the height of the ruby's crown, the depth of the structure, the size of the table (the top of the crown), as well as the angles of the crown and structure.

The American Requirement criteria for rounded diamonds asks for a crown elevation of 16.2%, structure depth of 43.1%, and table size of 53% of the complete band diameter. The Suitable Brilliant standard, however, requires 19.2% crown elevation, 40% pavilion deepness, as well as 56.5% table size. While these differences might be challenging for beginners to discern, they are a good illustration of the troubles connected with developing a simple evaluation of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some disagreements regarding the precise percentages that constitute the perfect ruby cut, for possible ruby customers, one of the most vital thing to comprehend is that ruby certifications offered by companies like the AGS as well as GIA are trustworthy and also significant. Credible ruby vendors base the costs at which they deal rubies on the cut along with the remainder of the "4 Cs." When you purchase a ruby, you do not need to bother with the perception of just what makes a good ruby cut altering a lot that the value of your diamond will certainly be significantly impacted.

Which ruby reduced grade represents the most effective worth?

Which kind of diamond is best for you largely relies on your budget. For purchasers who want to purchase them, vendors typically suggest diamonds with the highest possible cut grades. Nevertheless, this might be because of some self-involvement on their component.

The other three Cs have an impact on diamond costs too, so it can be hard to gauge the exact difference in price between an Ideal or Excellent cut ruby and also an Excellent cut. For casual buyers as well as budget-conscious capitalists alike, rubies with an Excellent or Great cut grade could stand for an excellent value. This is because, while they could be much more cost effective than or else equivalent Perfect or Superb cut diamonds, the noticeable distinction in top quality is marginal.

At the same time, don't hesitate to use your discretion. If, as an example, you come throughout a diamond with an Ideal reduced score which has great ratings in the other categories and also is still within your budget plan, after that you ought to absolutely consider it, as long as you're dealing with a reputable vendor.

Rubies are developed deep within the earth and also eventually, over incredibly extended periods of time, press their means to the earth's surface area, generally via volcanic eruptions.

The age of these diamonds from under the surface area of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years of ages! Even if the ruby itself has ideal shade as well as quality, with a poor cut the ruby will have a boring luster. This is because the cut identifies exactly how light journeys within the ruby. The Gemological Institute of America has actually also created a clearness grading system to place ruby clarity. This grading system consists of Remarkable (Fl), Inside Remarkable (IF), Extremely Really A Little Consisted Of (VV1 or VV2), Very A Little Consisted Of(VS1 or VS2), Somewhat Consisted Of(SI1 or SI2), and Included(I1, I2, and also I3). Although this system had actually been added to the ruby sector, it is not widely made use of. This is due to the fact that it took a great deal of practice as well as training to incorporate it.

A shallow cut is a cut of a diamond that is also low, that light taking a trip with it is shed on the bottom of the rock and also does not return right into sight. This cut makes a diamond show up drab and also plain. A cut that is also deep is a cut that is expensive, that light traveling with it leaves via the sides as well as darkens the stone. A perfect cut is a best cut on a ruby that mirrors light to the top of the stone, giving it ideal sparkle.

* Carat

As mentioned on the last e-newsletter, a single carat weight(ct) weighs regarding 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller carat weight diamonds that consider less than a carat weight, it is revealed as factors (pt). Points are 1/100 of a carat. Carat weight of a diamond is vital as a result of that bigger rubies are rarer than smaller ones, so essentially the larger the diamond the extra expensive it is. There is no standard grading system or diagram that can reveal different carat weight. This is because there are numerous variants of diamonds fit and also cut, that makes rocks of comparable weight, look different.

Sometimes, some dishonest people aim to offer these choices to misfortunate purchasers in order to profit. Listed below we will certainly discuss concerning these alternatives as well as ways to identify them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

The very first recognized situations of ruby synthesis were claimed to be documented between 1879 - 1928, however this was never verified. It wasn't till the 1940's where study started in the United States, Sweden, Soviet Union began researching. A few of these synthetic rubies could either have greater, lesser or comparable features than that of a diamond. Consequently, these synthetic rubies are made use of for abrasives, reducing and polishing devices, and also switches in power terminals.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond materials that are used to duplicate the appearance or even the form of a diamond. One of the most fundamental and well known simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at simple view can shimmer greater than a ruby as well as it is much less thick, meaning that a 1 carat weight CZ will be much larger compared to a 1 carat ruby. Nowadays, an extra preferred simulant is moissanite, which has all the exact same attributes of a diamond. These features consist of firmness (Moissanite-9.25 and diamond-10 in Mohs range), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 and also diamond -2.42) as well as dispersion (Moissanite -.104 and also diamond -.044). This makes it tough to differentiate both at plain view and also would certainly typically require testers to discriminate. In the following section we will certainly review how you can determine moissanites and other imitations.

* Actual or Fake?

An old method of recognizing diamonds is to do a scratch test. This requires scratching a ruby with an additional diamond which is damaging as well as is seldom made use of nowadays. The most effective as well as most reputable way to evaluate for rubies is to use testers that make use of thermal conductivity. These testers consist of battery powered thermistors mounted with a retracting copper tip. This tester works by injecting the warmth onto the examined stone then the gadget gauges the amount of warm that it conducts. Nonetheless thermal conductivity testers functions best to identify rubies and also its various other simulants, it will not help identify lab created or synthetic rocks. To be able to determine these, particular optical methods are needed. Laboratories utilize strategies such as spectroscopy, microscopy and also luminescence in order to identify a specific stones origin. The typical individual could use loupes and microscopic lens to differentiate synthetic stones. Natural diamonds normally have minor flaws and flaws such as incorporations or some kind of foreign material, which will not be located in synthetics.

5 Tips on What To Look For When Buying Diamonds For Wedding Rings

A wedding, or an engagement in  Sterling, is one of the most important events in every couple’s life. One of the best ways of making the experience memorable is by choosing the right ring to symbolize the love you have for one another. While most couples would like to get the most beautiful ring they can lay their hands on, budgetary restrictions can be a challenge. However, it is possible to find an ideal ring based on your budget.

For anyone looking for precious diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings in Sterling, they should consider going about the process carefully. There are various dealers in the market, some of who may sell you fake diamonds. Here are a few useful tips on what to look for when looking for precious diamonds for engagement or wedding rings.

Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in Sterling. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Sterling to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in Sterling for you engagement or wedding.

Sterling How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
