It is used in wedding celebration rings to stand for endless love or utilized as gifts/jewelry to be offered to liked ones. However the ruby is a lot greater than its timeless elegance.

The ruby derives its name from the Greek work adamas implying unequalled. In solidity, there is no comparison. The diamond prices in the Mohs scale a 10 which is the hardest material on Earth. Its cutting resistance is 140 times that of the ruby and sapphire, the gems(Corundum) that are next in the Mohs range in hardness. The diamond's optical buildings such as radiance and inflexibility make it distinct and easily distinguished from other imitations. Take pleasure in!

* Background of Diamonds

The initial tape-recorded diamond go back around 800 B.C. in India. Some believe it even went back 6,000 years ago. The rubies were used as decorative functions and as talismans to prevent evil and also provide defense in fight. During the Dark Ages, rubies were even mentioned to be made use of as a medical help. Religious physicians also told individuals that if they hold a ruby in a hand and also make the indicator of the cross would certainly, it would treat as well as health problem as well as recover wounds.

Diamonds ended up being extra prominent during the 19th century because of discovery of diamond down payments in South Africa. This exploration leads to boosted supply, enhanced reducing as well as brightening techniques, and also growth in economy. In 1979, geologists found the Argyle pipe in Australia which to this date is the wealthiest ruby deposit worldwide. Argyle, ever since, alone is accountable for providing over one third of the world's diamonds every year.

* Diamonds: Exactly how are they formed?

Rubies includes an allotrope of carbons that are formed in high-pressure, high-temperature problems. Diamonds are generated 90 miles under the Planet's surface at temperature levels of regarding 2200 levels Fahrenheit. Rubies are formed deep within the planet as well as at some point, over incredibly long periods of time, push their way to the planet's surface area, generally through volcanic eruptions.

The age of these rubies from underneath the surface area of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years of ages! When rubies are formed and also start their ascent to the earth's surface, they undergo channels where the lava from the volcano climbs to the surface area, grabbing diamonds along the road and also at some point depositing them externally, where they are eventually discovered as well as mined.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are four distinctive attributes that establish the worth and top quality of a ruby. These are the color, cut, quality as well as carat weight. Otherwise known as the 4 C's of a diamond. In the following, we will certainly discuss these features carefully.

* Color

In the last newsletter, we touch based on the shade of gems as being one of the most vital attribute due to the fact that color is one of the most evident function. The ideal ruby ought to appear clear and also colorless however this is not the situation for all rubies. Rubies can be available in any shade of the rainbow most common color is a color of yellow or brownish. The Geological Institute of The U.S.A.(GIA) have developed a standard to quality ruby color. This standard includes a text system that ranges from the alphabet D - Z. Please see listed below:

D E F No Color G H I J Almost Colorless K L M Faintly tinted, can not rarely be seen as well as normally yellow in color N O P Q R Gently tinted, normally yellow. Can be seen with the naked eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, begins with yellow and also progresses to brownish

* Quality

The cut a diamond is identified by the ruby's proportion such as its shape, width as well as deepness. The cut establishes what is called the diamond's "luster". Even if the diamond itself has ideal color and also quality, with an inadequate cut the ruby will certainly have a plain sparkle. This is because the cut establishes exactly how light journeys within the diamond. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. has likewise developed a clarity grading system to place ruby quality. This grading system includes Flawless (Fl), Internally Flawless (IF), Really Very Slightly Consisted Of (VV1 or VV2), Very Slightly Included(VS1 or VS2), Slightly Included(SI1 or SI2), and also Included(I1, I2, as well as I3). Although this system had actually been added to the diamond market, it is not commonly utilized. This is because of that it took a great deal of practice as well as training to incorporate it.

* Cut

The cut a ruby is identified by the diamond's proportion such as its shape, width and deepness. The cut establishes what is called the diamond's "sparkle". Even if the ruby itself has excellent color and also clearness, with a bad cut the ruby will have a boring sparkle. This is since the cut identifies exactly how light trips within the diamond.

There are 3 sorts of cuts that could determine the diamond's sparkle. These are a superficial cut, a cut that is too deep as well as excellent cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a diamond that is too low, that light taking a trip through it is shed on the base of the rock and also does not come back into sight. This cut makes a diamond appear drab as well as boring. A cut that is unfathomable is a cut that is expensive, that light traveling via it runs away via the sides and also dims the stone. An ideal cut is an excellent cut on a ruby that reflects light to the top of the stone, providing it best radiance.

* Carat weight

As mentioned on the last e-newsletter, a solitary carat weight(ct) considers concerning 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller sized carat weight rubies that consider less than a carat, it is revealed as points (pt). Points are 1/100 of a carat weight. Carat weight of a ruby is necessary because of the fact that larger rubies are rarer than smaller sized ones, so primarily the larger the diamond the extra costly it is. There is no standard grading system or representation that could reveal various carat weight. This is due to the fact that there are a lot of variations of rubies in form and cut, that makes stones of similar weight, look different.

* Replica Diamonds

Given that rubies are the most important and also rarest of all the gemstones, initiatives have been made to replicate and even improve rubies using more economical alternatives. A great deal of times, truthful errors have actually been made and also these choices or other gems such as spinel were often perplexed with real rubies. In many cases, some dishonest individuals attempt to market these options to misfortunate customers in order to revenue. Listed below we will certainly discuss concerning these options as well as methods to determine them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

Synthetic diamonds are rubies that are expanded produced in a lab. The first known situations of diamond synthesis were asserted to be recorded between 1879 - 1928, yet this was never confirmed. It had not been up until the 1940's where research began in the USA, Sweden, Soviet Union started researching. Artificial rubies are otherwise understood as High Pressure Heat (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) rubies. The name of both these synthetic diamonds obtains from the procedures utilized to create them. A few of these synthetic diamonds could either have higher, lower or comparable qualities compared to that of a ruby. Therefore, these artificial rubies are used for abrasives, reducing and also polishing devices, as well as switches over in power plant.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond compounds that are used to duplicate the look or even the form of a diamond. The most fundamental and well known simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at simple view could sparkle greater than a ruby as well as it is less dense, suggesting that a 1 carat weight CZ will be a lot larger than a 1 carat diamond. Nowadays, a much more preferred simulant is moissanite, which has all the exact same attributes of a ruby. These features consist of firmness (Moissanite-9.25 and diamond-10 in Mohs range), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 as well as ruby -2.42) and also diffusion (Moissanite -.104 and also diamond -.044). This makes it difficult to set apart both at ordinary view as well as would certainly usually need testers to tell the distinction. In the next section we will talk about how to recognize moissanites and also various other replicas.

* Genuine or Counterfeit?

An old method of recognizing diamonds is to do a scrape test. This requires damaging a diamond with one more diamond which is devastating and also is seldom made use of nowadays. The best and also most dependable method to evaluate for diamonds is to use testers that utilize thermal conductivity. These testers include battery powered thermistors placed with a retractable copper idea. This tester works by injecting the heat into the evaluated rock and afterwards the gadget gauges the quantity of warmth that it conducts. Nonetheless thermal conductivity testers functions best to distinguish rubies and its other simulants, it will not assist distinguish lab developed or artificial rocks. To be able to determine these, certain optical methods are required. Laboratories make use of methods such as spectroscopy, microscopy and also luminescence in order to figure out a particular rocks beginning. The ordinary person could use loupes and also microscopes to distinguish artificial rocks. Natural diamonds normally have minor blemishes and problems such as incorporations or some type of foreign product, which will not be discovered in synthetics.

What You Should Know When Buying a Diamond Ring

Centralia

Exactly how are diamond cut qualities designated?

This is where points begin to obtain complicated. The techniques made use of to quantitatively analyze the top quality of a cut vary. The method the GIA establishes what a diamond's cut quality ought to be, for example, varies in very specific means from the way other certifiers like the AGS do it. For the most parts, these companies don't divulge the precise details of the processes they utilize.

The form of a diamond likewise makes a difference with regard to just how its cut grade is determined. Although there are some fundamental standards that continue to be the exact same for any kind of kind of ruby, the exact techniques made use of to quality a round diamond's cut are various from those used to grade a heart-shaped diamond's cut.

The rest of this explanation will concentrate on round rubies, as this is without a doubt one of the most common diamond form. Among the variables influencing the cut quality of a round diamond is the number of aspects it has. Aspects are the level, specified areas on the surface area of a ruby. The aspects on round rubies are typically triangular. Currently, it's believed that the optimal round diamond ought to have 33 elements on the crown (the area of the ruby that sits over the band, which itself is the largest factor of the ruby) as well as 25 on the structure (the lower, much longer area of the diamond). When there are blemishes on the surface area of the diamond, cutters may add added elements in order to obscure them. This leads to a degradation in the general high quality of the cut.

While the element matter is usually decideded upon as an excellent way of judging the quality of a diamond cut, there are various other factors on which jewelers regularly differ. Some of the other factors made use of by some authorities in order to help establish cut grades include the height of the ruby's crown, the depth of the pavilion, the size of the table (the top of the crown), and also the angles of the crown and also structure.

The American Criterion criteria for round rubies calls for a crown height of 16.2%, pavilion deepness of 43.1%, as well as table diameter of 53% of the complete girdle diameter. The Suitable Brilliant criteria, nevertheless, asks for 19.2% crown elevation, 40% pavilion depth, and 56.5% table diameter. While these distinctions might be hard for beginners to determine, they are an excellent picture of the troubles related to creating an easy assessment of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some disagreements regarding the precise percentages that make up the ideal ruby cut, for possible diamond customers, one of the most vital thing to understand is that ruby qualifications offered by organizations like the AGS as well as GIA are trustworthy and also purposeful. Trustworthy diamond suppliers base the rates at which they deal diamonds on the cut along with the remainder of the "four Cs." When you acquire a diamond, you don't have to stress over the perception of exactly what makes an excellent diamond cut altering a lot that the value of your ruby will be significantly influenced.

Which ruby cut grade stands for the most effective worth?

Which type of ruby is best for you largely relies on your spending plan. For purchasers who are willing to purchase them, suppliers generally recommend rubies with the greatest possible cut grades. Nonetheless, this might be because of some self-interest on their component.

The various other three Cs have an effect on ruby costs also, so it can be difficult to determine the specific distinction in cost between a Suitable or Superb cut ruby as well as an Excellent cut. For informal buyers and also budget-conscious investors alike, rubies with an Excellent or Great cut quality can represent an outstanding value. This is because, while they could be much more economical compared to otherwise equivalent Perfect or Outstanding cut rubies, the visible distinction in top quality is minimal.

At the same time, really feel totally free to utilize your discretion. If, for instance, you find a diamond with a Perfect cut ranking which has good ratings in the other classifications and also is still within your spending plan, after that you ought to absolutely consider it, as long as you're dealing with a reputable supplier.

Rating Rough Diamonds!

Centralia

Diamonds are normally available in a very wide variety of shades. Lots of people find out about anemic rubies and also GIA's color grading system that is used to categorize a diamond's body shade ... you recognize D, E, F, and so on. This shade grading system is only used to categorize the most common diamond body color of yellow nevertheless anytime a ruby is discovered in one more color like pink, blue, environment-friendly, etc.; after that this diamond is referred to as a "" elegant ruby"".

Natural Fancy rubies can be extremely pricey and also sometimes more pricey compared to a similar dimension anemic ruby. A very good example of a Fancy ruby is the well known 45.52 carat fancy deep blue ruby, the Hope Diamond, which gets on display in the Smithsonian Nature Museum in Washington, DC.

A color enhanced ruby is a 100% all-natural diamond that has had its color altered. And also finest of all, shade improved diamonds been available in a very large option of colors at extremely cost effective prices!

A little bit of background- For numerous, years it has actually been popular that a diamond's shade can be "" boosted"" by placing a bit of colored material on the surface area of a ruby and also simply like magic ... a ruby that had a visible yellow-colored color would transform to a more attractive near anemic ruby. Sadly, this sort of color improved diamond could change back to its original body shade if this tinted compound was accidentally gotten rid of. In more current years, the innovation of shade enhanced rubies has actually gone exceptionally advanced. It is now feasible to entirely transform the color of a diamond! These processes are taken into consideration irreversible because it does continue to be steady when subjected to daily normal problems. The color will certainly not fade if subjected to sunlight or be cleaned off by rough chemicals.

Just how is it done? The preferred outcome of any of these treatments is to have a more marketable ruby. A much less marketable ruby would be a diamond that has a low body shade or in some cases a reduced clearness. The shade improved ruby treatment companies recognize if they start with a specific sort of diamond and also process it for a specific quantity of time that they must wind up with a specific color yet it does not always function in this way. This is a science that does require some art in their processes ... the only process that provides constant results is the finishing procedure.

The three procedures are as follows- Refine # 1- HPHT Color Improved Diamonds- High Pressure/ Heat (HPHT) therapy could boost the shade of certain sorts of brownish diamonds as well as therefore enhance their value. General Electric has established a procedure that practically is a mechanical simulation of a diamond's development in nature. The shade boosted diamond will be warmed up to a really heat under a very high, stabilized pressure. Faults in the crystal structure are then repositioned causing a modification of the ruby's color. Because the conditions of HPHT are extremely just like ruby's initial development, just a well furnished laboratory will certainly be able to favorably recognize this type of shade boosted ruby. HPHT wased initially used to transform yellow-colored diamonds right into more marketable fancy tinted enhanced rubies, and now it is likewise made use of to transform some unpopular brownish rubies into even more preferable colorless tinted improved diamonds.

Process # 2- Irradiated Shade Improved Diamonds- OK ... do not begin obtaining all thrilled because you saw words irradiated! This is a 100% secure process that is really much like what is used to protect food by revealing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color improved diamond process is done in numerous various methods yet the outcomes are all the very same. You begin with a reduced shade (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% all-natural ruby that has already been reduced and also polished, then it is revealed to a stream of quick electrons. Throughout this component of the process the diamond will certainly count on a really dark color since several of the atoms in the diamond's crystal framework have actually currently been disjointed and also this subsequently has impacted the way light go through the ruby. Next the ruby goes with a controlled heating (annealing) procedure, this permits some of those atoms to move (partly repaired) in order to get a preferred shade.

Process # 3- Covered Color Boosted Diamonds- The layer on polished rubies refers to a thin fabricated layer that modifies the color of the diamond. The finish could either be of the preferred shade or could cause a colored interference-effect. Regrettably occasionally this process is done to deceive a buyer. It is a relatively very easy process to carry out, it has actually been around for several years (although the coverings products are much better now), and it does not need a great deal of expensive high technology devices. Recently, I have actually seen some pink layered diamonds on the marketplace, they are extremely eye-catching ... as well as of training course you would certainly have to buy them recognizing that they have actually been layered as well as follow your jeweler's guidelines concerning having and looking after these color boosted rubies. The finish can be used to the whole of a ruby's surface, simply all-time low of the diamond, or to a narrow zone near the girdle. A well-applied covering can alter the shade by several color grade. Some coverings could be gotten rid of with boiling in acid, strong cleaning services, and even family chemicals. Occasionally dots or larger locations of purple or blue ink are paintinged on the diamond to help counteract a yellow-colored color. The diamond's setting will generally cover the dots, so they are hard to see in an installed rock.

So, is a shade enhanced diamond right for you? Perhaps ... natural expensive shade rubies could be gorgeous however they are pricey! Color enhanced rubies are budget-friendly as well as enable many individuals to possess a brightly tinted diamond. Ask your neighborhood jewelry expert if they have any Fancy rubies ... either natural or shade boosted diamonds. It is always fascinating, and also fun, to look at something various!

Under regular wear the irradiated as well as HPHT shade boosted rubies will have no problems of the shade fading away. The only factor to consider will be when you need to have any sort of solution done on the item of jewelry. If this kind of shade enhanced ruby is exposed to extreme amounts of warm it might influence the shade. The jeweler will certainly need to recognize that the diamond is a color boosted ruby before any job is done and afterwards the jewelry expert will certainly be able to select the most effective program of activity. Shade enhanced rubies are currently also made use of as the small accent rubies around a bigger anemic ruby. There are many exciting items of precious jewelry offered with tiny blue, yellow, black, or green color boosted rubies.

Since you learn about shade improved diamonds as well as someone attempts to market you on what they call an all-natural fancy colored ruby however it is at an extremely bargain price ... you will certainly understand that something just does not appear right regarding the offer. A record from a highly regarded grading lab ought to go along with all natural Fancy tinted diamonds that are marketed as natural. If you deal with a trusted firm and also you have been reassured about exactly what you are buying, then you will decrease the possibility of something negative occurring to you. As with any type of scenario including a pricey purchase of something that very few people are experienceded in, education and learning needs to be an important component of your plan. This is much more important if you prepare to purchase a shade improved diamond. Bud Boland has actually remained in the jewelry organisation for 40 years and also has actually done everything from watchmaking, diamond setting, precious jewelry making, as well as has actually been a Jeweler for almost 35 years. He is a Graduate Jeweler from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is additionally the area where he was an Instructor. He has actually shown about rubies to thousands of trainees from all over the globe

5 Tips on What To Look For When Buying Diamonds For Wedding Rings

A wedding, or an engagement in  Centralia, is one of the most important events in every couple’s life. One of the best ways of making the experience memorable is by choosing the right ring to symbolize the love you have for one another. While most couples would like to get the most beautiful ring they can lay their hands on, budgetary restrictions can be a challenge. However, it is possible to find an ideal ring based on your budget.

For anyone looking for precious diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings in Centralia, they should consider going about the process carefully. There are various dealers in the market, some of who may sell you fake diamonds. Here are a few useful tips on what to look for when looking for precious diamonds for engagement or wedding rings.

Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in Centralia. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Centralia to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in Centralia for you engagement or wedding.

Centralia How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
