Gretna How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all sellers supply ruby grading laboratory reports (aka diamond top quality reports) to their customers. So my basic advice to you is to keep your loan in your pocket when dealing with such jewelers.

Only purchase a ruby engagement ring if it includes the initial diamond quality report.

A laboratory report is an independent evaluation of the 4Cs of a loose diamond and also consists of an outlined diagram of the stone's quality characteristics and a visuals representation of the stone's percentages. Having such a record allows you to contrast diamonds of different high qualities as well as eventually assists you make a more educated buying decision.

A merchant might cut edges and also not offer a lab report or an unscrupulous seller might offer a fake one as a result of the moment, problem and expense he'll bear to obtaining a rock rated.

Yeah - there is a rate for rating a diamond (though that price is at some point paid by the customer), plus the delivery and insurance policy costs for sending the diamond to the lab. And allow us not forget the chance cost of a jewelry expert not having the diamond in his store available for a few weeks while the grading happens.

However, a diamond grading record may likewise not be offered because the expenses to obtaining one could influence too heavily on the final rate of the ring. For instance, a 0.3 ct ruby ring setting you back $250 claim, might cost around $75 to be rated and have the record number engraved on the girdle on the ruby. As you browse for that excellent diamond involvement ring for your sweetheart, you'll discover that there is an alphabet soup of laboratories asserting to give respectable ruby grading reports. However I would only place my money on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Laboratory Reports

Yes, all ruby quality records are not produced equal. Within the market, it is an agreement that both top labs are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America's Treasure Profession Laboratory) and the AGS (American Treasure Culture Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Certification and Assurance Lab) also supplies highly concerned records or "ruby certificates" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the strongest worldwide track record for independence and uniformity. Because of their constant shade and clearness strictness standards, the globe's biggest and most costly rubies have actually been sent there for rating decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded brilliant diamonds.

AGS makes use of the most strict cut criteria in the market. It uses a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that can quality numerous ruby forms. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is acknowledged by the clinical community.

What is more, its Ruby Top quality File uses a special as well as proprietary 0 to 10 grading system to evaluate the 4 Cs - a system which is much easier to comprehend than GIA's grading system. As a matter of fact, AGS even goes the added action by equating their 0-10 score range to other kinds of ranking. As an example, the traditional VS1 diamond quality rating is a 3 on the AGS Diamond Quality File.

Ruby Reporting - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standard or regulated and also for this reason you might find rate 2 laboratories that utilize looser standards to the tier 1 grading laboratories stated above. If you buy a diamond that has been rated by a rate 2 lab, you might wind up paying more for a minimal top quality ruby. So for instance, a diamond rated a "F" in shade at a rate 2 laboratory could get a G, H, or lower shade score at a much more reputable lab. The industry likewise marks down rubies graded by minimal recognized laboratories by concerning 15-30% or even more. So either you just get a ruby rated by a rate 1 lab or you approve that you could be acquiring a lower top quality diamond than just what is stated on the report if that ruby is graded by a lesser recognized lab.

2. Many large chain shops have substantial contracts with lower known labs with "softer" diamond grading standards. Some of these softer laboratories placed "suggested substitute worths" on the lab reports - worths which are above exactly what shops intends offer the diamonds for. So a salesperson in a store might say to you, "Look at the good deal you are obtaining right here. We are offering you this diamond engagement ring for $2500 however the record states that the suggested substitute worth is $4000." Wow - what a deal - NOT! This is why it is much better that you trust only independent tier 1 labs.

Likewise remember that respectable ruby grading reports are not appraisals and also do not supply appraisal figures. Diamond assessments are usually grossly inflated as well as are not something you'll desire to depend on.

3. Diamond reports are riddled with disclaimers that specify that nothing is "licensed" or guaranteed which the laboratories are not responsible for errors. As a matter of fact, the GIA uses a please note of types on their web site relating to using words "accredit." The site says:

"It is incorrect to state that students, graduates, their organisations, or specific gemstones are "licensed" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not license anybody or anything. Neither a pupil neither a grad who has actually been awarded a certification or diploma, nor a gem which has been graded or determined by GIA has been licensed by GIA".

So it is feasible that you the consumer is left holding the bag should an inaccuracy in a record is later discovered. Courts have regularly ruled that vendors, not labs, are liable for such errors. Why? Due to the fact that the laboratories suggested in advance that their reports couldn't be held responsible.

Fortunately, there are a couple ways to provide yourself more buyer security:

C. Not as excellent a remedy as acquiring a totally bound diamond but you can get a ruby that features an actual "certificate" and also not a report. "Qualified rubies do feature guaranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Accreditation Some sellers refer to a "ruby report" as a "certified ruby" however practically this is not deal with. From a legal perspective, a ruby report is a simply an expert viewpoint though in truth, elements of a diamond rating report are not simply opinions.

For instance, a diamond's carat (weight) can be precisely identified as well as its cut quality by measuring its optical efficiency or by describing a computer system version. A certification on the various other hand is a declaration of reality - a record for which the provider accepts legal responsibility as well as will make restitution to the customer for mistakes.

Some top diamond grading laboratories supply both records as well as certificates. AGS uses Diamond Quality Files (non-certified records) and Diamond Quality Certificates. Diamond Quality Certifications are ready exclusively for AGS retail jewelry experts and provides warranties from getting involved American Gem Society member stores.

GCAL accredits it's diamond grading likewise. Its 100% money-back guarantee policy is valid for a period of two years from the date on the applicable certification. This plan ensures the precision of the cut, shade and also quality grades and also the carat weight.

A report or certificate must will certainly have a number on it that might or may not be etched on a diamond. You will be able to enter that number on the site of the accrediting laboratory to check a report's legitimacy.

Aspects Of A Diamond Grading Record Ruby rating records are always evolving yet specific element must remain the same. For instance, the:

The less color the higher the grade.

Diamonds are usually rated from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the diamond. You must never see ruby color array such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so on) on a diamond report. You need to just see color ranges on appraisals for stones that are mounted.

Clearness Grade: Basically every diamond has actually internal imperfections called incorporations and also outside blemishes called imperfections. A ruby is graded according to the dimension, kind, place as well as amount of these defects.

Other elements you could stumble upon on a ruby record include the gloss, proportion, fluorescence as well as proportion. Equipped with this information, you are much better able to make an evaluation of the quality of ruby that is installed in an engagement ring.

Gretna How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Diamonds are naturally readily available in a really large range of shades. Many people find out about colorless diamonds as well as GIA's shade grading system that is used to classify a ruby's body shade ... you understand D, E, F, and so on. This shade grading system is only utilized to identify the most common diamond body shade of yellow nonetheless anytime a diamond is located in an additional color like pink, blue, eco-friendly, and so on; after that this diamond is referred to as a "" elegant ruby"".

All-natural Fancy diamonds can be extremely expensive as well as many times extra costly compared to a comparable size anemic ruby. An excellent example of a Fancy diamond is the well known 45.52 carat weight fancy deep blue ruby, the Hope Ruby, which gets on screen in the Smithsonian Nature Museum in Washington, DC.

A color boosted ruby is a 100% all-natural ruby that has had its color transformed. And also most importantly, color improved diamonds can be found in a very vast choice of shades at extremely affordable costs!

A little history- For numerous, several years it has actually been popular that a diamond's color can be "" improved"" by placing a little colored substance externally of a ruby and just like magic ... a ruby that had a recognizable yellow-colored shade would change to an extra eye-catching near anemic ruby. Sadly, this sort of shade improved ruby might change back to its initial body color if this colored substance was unintentionally eliminated. In more current years, the modern technology of shade enhanced diamonds has gone extremely advanced. It is currently possible to completely transform the color of a ruby! These procedures are thought about long-term because it does stay secure when subjected to everyday typical problems. The shade will not fade if subjected to sunlight or be washed off by harsh chemicals.

Just how is it done? The desired result of any of these therapies is to have a much more valuable diamond. A much less marketable ruby would be a ruby that has a low body color or sometimes a reduced clarity. The shade improved ruby treatment business understand if they start with a specific kind of ruby and also process it for a particular amount of time that they ought to wind up with a particular shade yet it does not constantly work that method. This is a science that does call for some art in their procedures ... the only process that provides consistent outcomes is the finish procedure.

The three procedures are as complies with- Refine # 1- HPHT Color Enhanced Diamonds- High Stress/ Heat (HPHT) treatment could boost the shade of specific kinds of brown rubies and also hence enhance their value. General Electric has actually established a procedure that virtually is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's creation in nature. The shade improved ruby will be heated up to an extremely high temperature level under a really high, maintained pressure. Faults in the crystal framework are after that reorganized resulting in a change of the diamond's color. Due to the fact that the problems of HPHT are extremely just like ruby's initial development, only a well furnished laboratory will certainly be able to positively recognize this type of shade improved diamond. HPHT was first made use of to turn yellow-colored diamonds right into even more marketable fancy colored boosted rubies, now it is additionally made use of to change some out of favor brownish diamonds into better colorless colored improved diamonds.

Refine # 2- Irradiated Color Boosted Diamonds- OK ... do not begin getting all excited because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% secure procedure that is really just like just what is made use of to protect food by revealing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The shade improved ruby procedure is performed in several different means yet the outcomes are all the exact same. You start with a reduced shade (P, Q, R, etc.) 100% all-natural ruby that has already been cut and brightened, after that it is subjected to a stream of fast electrons. During this part of the procedure the ruby will certainly rely on a very dark shade due to the fact that several of the atoms in the ruby's crystal structure have actually now been disjointed and also this in turn has affected the way light passes via the ruby. Next the diamond goes with a controlled home heating (annealing) procedure, this permits several of those atoms to transfer (partly repaired) in order to get a desired shade.

Process # 3- Layered Color Boosted Diamonds- The coating on refined diamonds refers to a slim synthetic layer that changes the color of the diamond. The layer can either be of the wanted shade or could create a tinted interference-effect. Regrettably in some cases this procedure is done to deceive a buyer. It is a relatively easy process to execute, it has been around for years (although the coatings materials are better currently), and also it does not call for a whole lot of expensive advanced tools. Lately, I've seen some pink layered rubies on the marketplace, they are very eye-catching ... as well as naturally you would certainly have to buy them knowing that they have been layered and also follow your jewelry expert's guidelines regarding owning as well as looking after these color boosted rubies. The finishing could be related to the whole of a diamond's surface area, just the base of the diamond, or to a slim zone near the girdle. A well-applied layer can change the shade by several color grade. Some layers could be eliminated through steaming in acid, solid cleansing remedies, or perhaps family chemicals. Sometimes dots or bigger locations of purple or blue ink are repainted on the ruby in order to help combat a yellowish color. The ruby's setting will normally cover the dots, so they are hard to see in an installed rock.

So, is a color boosted ruby right for you? Possibly ... all-natural elegant color diamonds can be stunning however they are expensive! Shade boosted diamonds are affordable and enable many individuals to possess a brilliantly tinted ruby. Ask your local jeweler if they have any type of Fancy diamonds ... either natural or color enhanced rubies. It is always interesting, as well as enjoyable, to check out something different!

Under normal wear the irradiated and HPHT shade boosted rubies will certainly have not a problem of the color fading away. The only factor to consider will be when you should have any type of service done on the item of precious jewelry. If this kind of color improved diamond is subjected to too much quantities of warmth it may impact the shade. The jeweler will certainly should understand that the ruby is a shade enhanced ruby prior to any kind of job is done as well as then the jeweler will certainly have the ability to choose the most effective strategy. Shade boosted diamonds are now also made use of as the little accent rubies around a bigger anemic ruby. There are several exciting items of precious jewelry available with small blue, yellow, black, or eco-friendly color enhanced diamonds.

Since you find out about shade improved diamonds and a person aims to sell you on exactly what they call a natural expensive tinted diamond but it is at a super bargain price ... you will certainly recognize that something simply does not appear best concerning the offer. A report from a reputable grading lab need to accompany 100% natural Fancy colored diamonds that are marketed as all-natural. If you deal with a respectable company and also you have actually been reassured concerning exactly what you are purchasing, then you will reduce the possibility of something bad happening to you. Just like any circumstance including a pricey acquisition of something that very few individuals are well versed in, education and learning ought to be a crucial part of your plan. This is much more important if you prepare to acquire a color improved diamond. Bud Boland has actually remained in the jewelry company for 40 years and also has done everything from watchmaking, ruby setup, fashion jewelry making, as well as has been a Jeweler for nearly 35 years. He is a Graduate Jeweler from GIA (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.), which is additionally the area where he was a Teacher. Gretna How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Diamonds are normally available in an extremely variety of colors. Lots of people recognize concerning anemic diamonds and GIA's color grading system that is made use of to categorize a diamond's body shade ... you know D, E, F, etc. This shade grading system is only made use of to categorize one of the most common ruby body shade of yellow however anytime a ruby is located in an additional color like pink, blue, green, etc.; after that this diamond is referred to as a "" fancy ruby"".

All-natural Fancy diamonds could be very expensive and also lots of times extra expensive compared to a similar size anemic diamond. An extremely excellent example of a Fancy diamond is the well known 45.52 carat fancy deep blue ruby, the Hope Diamond, which is on screen in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, DC.

A shade enhanced ruby is a 100% natural diamond that has actually had its shade changed. As well as most importantly, color enhanced diamonds come in a very wide option of colors at very cost effective costs!

A little history- For several, several years it has been well known that a diamond's shade can be "" improved"" by putting a little bit of tinted substance externally of a ruby and also just like magic ... a ruby that had a noticeable yellow-colored color would transform to an extra appealing near anemic diamond. Regrettably, this type of shade improved diamond can transform back to its original body shade if this tinted compound was unintentionally eliminated. In even more recent years, the modern technology of color enhanced rubies has gone very high technology. It is now feasible to totally alter the shade of a ruby! These procedures are thought about long-term due to the fact that it does continue to be stable when exposed to day-to-day typical conditions. The shade will not fade if subjected to sunshine or be cleaned off by rough chemicals.

Just how is it done? The wanted result of any of these treatments is to have a much more marketable diamond. A less valuable diamond would certainly be a diamond that has a reduced body shade or in some cases a reduced clarity. The color enhanced ruby therapy companies know if they begin with a particular sort of diamond as well as process it for a specific amount of time that they need to end up with a specific color but it does not always work by doing this. This is a scientific research that does call for some art in their procedures ... the only process that gives constant results is the finishing process.

The 3 procedures are as follows- Refine # 1- HPHT Color Enhanced Diamonds- High Stress/ Heat (HPHT) therapy could improve the shade of certain sorts of brownish rubies and thus raise their worth. General Electric has actually created a process that practically is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's creation in nature. The color boosted diamond will be warmed up to an extremely high temperature under a really high, maintained pressure. Mistakes in the crystal framework are then repositioned causing a change of the ruby's shade. Due to the fact that the problems of HPHT are extremely just like ruby's original development, only a well outfitted lab will certainly be able to positively identify this kind of color enhanced ruby. HPHT wased initially used to turn yellowish rubies into even more valuable fancy tinted boosted diamonds, now it is additionally utilized to change some out of favor brownish rubies right into better anemic tinted boosted rubies.

Process # 2- Irradiated Shade Enhanced Diamonds- OK ... do not begin getting all thrilled because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% risk-free process that is really much like what is used to preserve food by revealing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The shade enhanced diamond process is done in several various methods however the outcomes are just the same. You start with a reduced shade (P, Q, R, and so on) 100% natural ruby that has already been cut as well as polished, after that it is exposed to a stream of fast electrons. Throughout this component of the process the diamond will certainly count on a really dark color since some of the atoms in the ruby's crystal structure have currently been dislocated and this consequently has influenced the method light travel through the ruby. Next the diamond experiences a controlled heating (annealing) process, this allows several of those atoms to move (partly repaired) in order to obtain a wanted color.

Refine # 3- Coated Color Enhanced Diamonds- The finish on polished rubies refers to a slim synthetic layer that alters the color of the diamond. The coating could either be of the wanted color or could cause a tinted interference-effect. Sadly often this process is done to deceive a buyer. It is a reasonably very easy procedure to perform, it has been around for many years (although the coatings materials are far better now), and also it does not need a whole lot of pricey high technology tools. Recently, I have actually seen some pink layered rubies on the market, they are really appealing ... as well as obviously you would certainly need to acquire them recognizing that they have actually been covered and follow your jeweler's standards regarding having and also looking after these color improved rubies. The coating could be put on the entire of a ruby's surface, simply all-time low of the diamond, or to a slim zone near the band. A well-applied covering can change the color by several color quality. Some coverings could be removed with boiling in acid, solid cleaning solutions, and even house chemicals. Sometimes dots or bigger areas of purple or blue ink are painted on the ruby in order to help combat a yellowish color. The diamond's setting will usually cover the dots, so they are hard to see in a placed stone.

So, is a shade boosted diamond right for you? Perhaps ... natural expensive shade diamonds could be gorgeous yet they are pricey! Color improved rubies are budget-friendly as well as enable many individuals to own a vibrantly tinted ruby. Ask your regional jeweler if they have any Fancy rubies ... either natural or shade improved rubies. It is constantly intriguing, as well as fun, to consider something various!

Under typical wear the irradiated and HPHT shade enhanced rubies will have no worry of the shade fading away. The only consideration will be when you require to have any kind of service done on the item of precious jewelry. If this kind of shade improved diamond is subjected to excessive amounts of warm it might affect the shade. The jewelry expert will should recognize that the diamond is a shade boosted diamond before any kind of job is done then the jeweler will certainly have the ability to choose the ideal strategy. Shade enhanced diamonds are now likewise used as the little accent rubies around a bigger colorless diamond. There are lots of interesting pieces of precious jewelry offered with tiny blue, yellow, black, or green color improved rubies.

Now that you find out about shade boosted diamonds and also a person attempts to market you on what they call a natural fancy colored diamond but it is at an incredibly bargain price ... you will certainly know that something just does not seem appropriate about the deal. A record from a revered grading laboratory must go along with all natural Fancy colored rubies that are marketed as natural. If you handle a credible business and you have actually been reassured concerning just what you are purchasing, then you will certainly lessen the opportunity of something poor occurring to you. As with any scenario involving a costly purchase of something that not many people are well versed in, education needs to be a vital part of your strategy. This is a lot more crucial if you plan to acquire a shade boosted ruby. He is a Graduate Gemologist from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is likewise the location where he was a Trainer. Start With the Basics When Fascinated in Acquiring Ruby Precious Jewelry.

Gretna

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
