Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

Ask for Proof of Certification

Clarity Boosted Diamonds - Some Things You Should Know!

Centralia

Not all sellers give ruby grading laboratory records (also known as diamond top quality reports) to their customers. So my general advice to you is to keep your loan in your pocket when taking care of such jewelers.

Only purchase a ruby engagement ring if it features the initial diamond high quality record.

A lab report is an independent evaluation of the 4Cs of a loose diamond as well as includes a plotted diagram of the rock's quality qualities and also a graphic representation of the stone's percentages. Having such a report enables you to compare diamonds of different top qualities and eventually aids you make an even more educated acquiring choice.

A seller might cut corners and not give a laboratory report or an underhanded seller might offer a phony one due to the moment, problem as well as cost he'll birth to obtaining a rock graded.

Yeah - there is a rate for grading a diamond (though that price is at some point paid by the customer), plus the shipping as well as insurance costs for sending out the diamond to the laboratory. As well as let us not neglect the possibility expense of a jewelry expert not having the ruby in his store available for sale for a few weeks while the grading happens.

Nonetheless, a diamond grading record could additionally not be offered due to the fact that the expenses to obtaining one might influence too greatly on the final cost of the ring. For example, a 0.3 ct ruby ring costing $250 say, may set you back around $75 to be graded as well as have the record number engraved on the girdle on the diamond. As you look for that ideal ruby involvement ring for your sweetie, you'll locate that there is an alphabet soup of labs asserting to give reliable ruby grading reports. But I would just put my money on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Laboratory Reports

Yes, all diamond top quality reports are not produced equivalent. Within the industry, it is a consensus that both premier laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America's Gem Profession Lab) as well as the AGS (American Gem Culture Laboratories).

The GCAL (Treasure Qualification as well as Guarantee Laboratory) likewise supplies very related to reports or "diamond certificates" as they are referred to by GCAL. The GIA has the toughest worldwide reputation for independence and also consistency. Because of their constant color and also quality strictness guidelines, the globe's largest and most costly rubies have actually been sent out there for rating years. In 2006, GIA-GTL added a two-dimensional cut grading system for round fantastic rubies.

AGS makes use of the strictest cut requirements in the market. It utilizes a three-dimensional light performance metric that could quality several ruby forms. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is recognized by the scientific area.

Exactly what is more, its Diamond High quality Record utilizes an one-of-a-kind as well as exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to examine the 4 Cs - a system which is easier to understand than GIA's grading system. Actually, AGS even goes the additional step by relating their 0-10 rating scale to other types of score. For example, the conventional VS1 ruby clarity ranking is a 3 on the AGS Ruby Quality Record.

Diamond Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standardized or regulated and also thus you may find rate 2 labs that utilize looser standards to the rate 1 grading labs pointed out above. If you get a diamond that has been graded by a rate 2 lab, you may wind up paying a lot more for a lesser top quality ruby. So as an example, a ruby ranked a "F" in color at a rate 2 lab could obtain a G, H, or lower shade rating at an extra respectable lab. The sector likewise marks down diamonds rated by minimal recognized laboratories by regarding 15-30% or more. So either you only get a ruby graded by a tier 1 lab or you accept that you may be getting a minimal quality ruby than just what is mentioned on the record if that diamond is graded by a lower known laboratory.

2. Numerous big store have substantial contracts with lesser known laboratories with "softer" diamond grading standards. Some of these softer labs put "suggested replacement worths" on the lab reports - worths which are above just what stores intends market the rubies for. So a sales representative in a store could claim to you, "Look at the good deal you are obtaining right here. We are selling you this ruby interaction ring for $2500 but the record claims that the recommended replacement worth is $4000." Wow - exactly what an offer - NOT! This is why it is better that you trust just independent tier 1 labs.

Also keep in mind that credible diamond rating reports are not appraisals and do not use assessment numbers. Ruby evaluations are typically blatantly filled with air as well as are not something you'll desire to rely upon.

3. Ruby records are riddled with please notes that specify that absolutely nothing is "certified" or ensured which the laboratories are not responsible for errors. As a matter of fact, the GIA supplies a please note of sorts on their web site regarding making use of words "accredit." The website claims:

"It is inaccurate to state that students, grads, their companies, or specific gems are "accredited" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not license any person or anything. Neither a trainee neither a grad that has actually been awarded a certification or diploma, neither a gem which has actually been graded or identified by GIA has actually been licensed by GIA".

So it is possible that you the consumer is left holding the bag must an error in a report is later on discovered. Courts have actually often ruled that sellers, not laboratories, are in charge of such errors. Why? Since the labs indicated in advance that their reports couldn't be held responsible.

Fortunately, there are a couple means to give on your own more purchaser defense:

A. You might fly to India where jewelry experts offer a lifetime buyback policy to their clients. As well expensive to fly?

B. You might locate among the 20% people jewelers who sell totally bonded rubies. These are diamonds that are sold with lifetime breakage, lifetime trade-in as well as lifetime buyback plans.

C. Not as good a treatment as getting a fully bonded diamond yet you can get a ruby that has a real "certificate" and not a report. "Certified rubies do come with guaranties" albeit for shorter durations.

Certification Some sellers refer to a "ruby record" as a "qualified diamond" however practically this is not correct. From a legal perspective, a ruby report is a just an experienced viewpoint though in truth, facets of a ruby grading report are not just opinions.

As an example, a diamond's carat (weight) could be accurately determined in addition to its cut quality by measuring its optical efficiency or by referring to a computer model. A certificate on the various other hand is a declaration of reality - a document for which the provider accepts lawful duty and will certainly make restitution to the consumer for blunders.

Some top ruby grading laboratories provide both reports and also certifications. AGS offers Ruby High quality Papers (non-certified reports) as well as additionally Diamond Top quality Certificates. Diamond Quality Certificates are prepared solely for AGS retail jewelers as well as provides guaranties from participating American Gem Culture member stores.

GCAL accredits it's ruby grading likewise. Its 100% money-back guarantee plan stands for a period of two years from the date on the relevant certification. This policy makes certain the precision of the cut, shade and also clearness qualities and the carat weight.

A record or certification need to will have a number on it that could or could not be inscribed on a diamond. You will be able to get in that number on the site of the certifying laboratory to check a record's credibility.

Aspects Of A Ruby Grading Record Diamond grading reports are constantly progressing however specific aspect must continue to be the exact same. For example, the:

The Record #. This number is given as well as taped in a lab's record and also could or could not be engraved on a ruby's band. You could get in the record number on a rating laboratory's website to inspect the authenticity of the ruby quality record or to obtain more details about the ruby. Forming & Element Style: This is the overview and the cutting design utilized for the aspect setup. There are 3 basic aspect styles - "great cut, step cut as well as mixed reducing design" and 12 basic shapes which include notables such as rounded fantastic as well as princess cut" diamonds.

Measurements: This describes dimension (not weight) of a ruby. Size includes measurements such as length, width, weight and size. A measurement is generally detailed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Dimensions play a huge function in just how a ruby sparkles.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is measured to the hundredth of a carat and also some even provide such step to the thousandth of a carat weight (1.123 ct.). Carat weight is the most objective as well as the most convenient to recognize of the 4Cs due to the fact that all one has to do is weight the rock. Shade Grade: This tells you the level of shade lack in the ruby. The much less shade the greater the quality.

Rubies are normally rated from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You need to never see diamond shade variety such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so on) on a diamond record. You ought to just see color arrays on appraisals for stones that are mounted.

Quality Grade: Essentially every ruby has interior imperfections called inclusions as well as exterior imperfections called acnes. A diamond is rated inning accordance with the size, type, place as well as amount of these defects.

Quality grades range from Perfect (FL) - Included. Labs use a pair specialists to quality the clarity of a ruby in order to create a much more exact reading.

Cut Quality: Extra current diamond records consist of a cut grade for common round fantastic rubies. Cut takes into account the brilliance, fire as well as scintillation of the ruby. Cut quality varies from Superb - Poor.

Various other components you may find on a ruby record consist of the gloss, symmetry, fluorescence and also percentage. Equipped with this information, you are better able making an assessment of the high quality of ruby that is placed in an interaction ring.

The method the GIA determines what a ruby's cut quality need to be, for instance, differs in very specific means from the method various other certifiers like the AGS do it. In most instances, these organizations do not disclose the exact information of the procedures they make use of.

The form of a diamond likewise makes a distinction with respect to exactly how its cut quality is determined. Although there are some standard criteria that continue to be the same for any kind of kind of ruby, the precise techniques used to quality a round diamond's cut are different from those used to quality a heart-shaped diamond's cut.

The rest of this description will certainly focus on round diamonds, as this is by far the most common diamond shape. Among the factors affecting the cut grade of a round diamond is the variety of aspects it has. Elements are the level, defined areas on the surface area of a ruby. The aspects on round rubies are typically triangular. Currently, it's assumed that the perfect round ruby must have 33 aspects on the crown (the section of the diamond that rests over the band, which itself is the best point of the diamond) as well as 25 on the pavilion (the lower, longer area of the diamond). When there are imperfections on the surface of the diamond, cutters could add extra facets in order to cover them. This causes a degradation in the general high quality of the cut.

While the element matter is generally concurred after as an excellent way of evaluating the quality of a diamond cut, there are other points on which gemologists often disagree. Several of the various other elements used by some authorities to assist figure out cut qualities consist of the elevation of the diamond's crown, the depth of the structure, the size of the table (the top of the crown), and the angles of the crown as well as pavilion.

The American Standard benchmark for round rubies requires a crown height of 16.2%, structure depth of 43.1%, and also table diameter of 53% of the complete girdle diameter. The Ideal Great benchmark, nonetheless, requires 19.2% crown height, 40% structure depth, and also 56.5% table size. While these differences could be tough for beginners to recognize, they are a good picture of the troubles connected with developing an easy assessment of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some disputes regarding the exact percentages that comprise the perfect ruby cut, for possible ruby buyers, one of the most crucial thing to comprehend is that diamond accreditations offered by companies like the AGS and also GIA are reliable as well as significant. Which diamond reduced grade represents the best worth?

Which type of diamond is best for you mainly depends on your budget. For purchasers who want to buy them, suppliers typically recommend rubies with the greatest feasible cut qualities. However, this might be due to some self-interest on their component.

The other 3 Cs have an influence on diamond rates as well, so it can be difficult to determine the specific distinction in rate between an Ideal or Superb cut ruby and also a Very Great cut. For laid-back buyers and also budget-conscious capitalists alike, diamonds with an Extremely Good or Great cut grade could stand for an excellent value. This is because, while they can be extra economical than or else equivalent Suitable or Outstanding cut rubies, the noticeable difference in quality is very little.

At the exact same time, don't hesitate to utilize your discernment. * History of Diamonds

The first tape-recorded diamond dates back around 800 B.C. in India. Some believe it also went back 6,000 years ago. The rubies were made use of as decorative objectives as well as likewise as talismans to ward off wicked and supply protection in fight. During the Dark Ages, rubies were also mentioned to be made use of as a medical aid. Spiritual physicians also told people that if they hold a diamond in a hand as well as make the indicator of the cross would, it would certainly heal and disease as well as recover wounds.

Diamonds came to be extra preferred throughout the 19th century because of exploration of diamond down payments in South Africa. This exploration brings about boosted supply, enhanced reducing and polishing strategies, as well as development in economy. In 1979, rock hounds found the Argyle pipeline in Australia which to this date is the wealthiest ruby down payment on the planet. Argyle, since after that, alone is accountable for providing over one third of the globe's rubies annually.

* Diamonds: Exactly how are they formed?

Rubies is composed of an allotrope of carbons that are formed in high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. Diamonds are created 90 miles under the Planet's surface area at temperatures of concerning 2200 levels Fahrenheit. Rubies are developed deep within the planet and ultimately, over very extended periods of time, push their method to the planet's surface, generally with volcanic eruptions.

The age of these diamonds from below the surface area of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years of ages! When rubies are created and begin their ascent to the planet's surface area, they go through channels where the magma from the volcano rises to the surface, grabbing diamonds in the process and ultimately depositing them externally, where they are at some point located as well as extracted.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are four unique features that establish the value and also top quality of a ruby. These are the color, cut, clarity and also carat. Otherwise recognized as the 4 C's of a ruby. In the complying with, we will discuss these functions carefully.

* Color

In the last newsletter, we touch based on the color of gemstones as being one of the most crucial attribute due to the reality that shade is one of the most obvious attribute. The perfect ruby ought to show up clear as well as colorless yet this is not the instance for all rubies. D E F No Shade G H I J Almost Colorless K L M Faintly colored, cannot hardly be seen and usually yellow in shade N O P Q R Gently tinted, usually yellow. Could be seen with the nude eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, begins with yellow as well as advances to brownish

* Clarity

The cut a ruby is figured out by the ruby's percentage such as its shape, size and depth. The cut identifies what is called the ruby's "sparkle". Also if the ruby itself has excellent color and also quality, with a poor cut the ruby will certainly have a dull luster. This is because the cut figures out exactly how light journeys within the diamond. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. has also designed a quality grading system to rate diamond clearness. This grading system includes Flawless (Fl), Internally Perfect (IF), Very Very Slightly Included (VV1 or VV2), Very Slightly Included(VS1 or VS2), Slightly Included(SI1 or SI2), as well as Consisted Of(I1, I2, and also I3). Although this system had actually been contributed to the ruby sector, it is not extensively made use of. This is due to that it took a whole lot of practice as well as training to incorporate it.

* Cut

The cut a ruby is established by the ruby's proportion such as its shape, width and deepness. The cut identifies exactly what is called the ruby's "brilliance". Even if the ruby itself has best color and also quality, with a poor cut the diamond will have a dull radiance. This is because the cut establishes how light trips within the ruby.

There are 3 types of cuts that could identify the ruby's sparkle. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is unfathomable and suitable cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a ruby that is also low, that light traveling through it is lost on the bottom of the rock and also does not return into view. This cut makes a diamond show up drab as well as plain. A cut that is too deep is a cut that is expensive, that light taking a trip via it gets away with the sides as well as darkens the rock. An ideal cut is an ideal cut on a diamond that mirrors light to the top of the rock, providing it ideal brilliance.

* Carat

As mentioned on the last e-newsletter, a solitary carat(ct) weighs concerning 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller sized carat diamonds that consider less compared to a carat, it is expressed as factors (pt). Points are 1/100 of a carat. Carat weight of a diamond is vital because of that larger diamonds are rarer than smaller sized ones, so basically the larger the ruby the much more expensive it is. There is no basic grading system or layout that can reveal various carat weight. This is due to the fact that there are so lots of variants of diamonds in shape as well as cut, which makes stones of similar weight, look different.

* Replica Diamonds

Since diamonds are the most useful and rarest of all the gems, initiatives have been made to duplicate or even enhance diamonds using cheaper alternatives. A whole lot of times, sincere mistakes have actually been made and also these choices or other gems such as spinel were in some cases puzzled with actual diamonds. Sometimes, some deceitful individuals aim to offer these alternatives to misfortunate buyers in order to profit. Listed below we will certainly review concerning these alternatives and ways to determine them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

The initial recognized instances of diamond synthesis were asserted to be recorded in between 1879 - 1928, however this was never ever confirmed. It had not been till the 1940's where research study started in the USA, Sweden, Soviet Union started investigating. Synthetic diamonds are or else understood as High Stress High Temperature Level (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) diamonds. The name of both these artificial rubies originates from the procedures made use of to develop them. A few of these synthetic rubies could either have higher, minimal or comparable features than that of a diamond. Consequently, these synthetic diamonds are made use of for abrasives, reducing and polishing devices, and also switches over in power plant.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond materials that are made use of to duplicate the appearance or even the form of a ruby. One of the most fundamental and popular simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at simple view could sparkle greater than a ruby and it is less thick, suggesting that a 1 carat weight CZ will be a lot bigger than a 1 carat weight diamond. Nowadays, a more preferred simulant is moissanite, which has just the same features of a diamond. These qualities consist of solidity (Moissanite-9.25 and also diamond-10 in Mohs range), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 and ruby -2.42) and also diffusion (Moissanite -.104 as well as ruby -.044). This makes it hard to set apart the 2 at plain view as well as would commonly require testers to discriminate. In the following section we will talk about ways to recognize moissanites as well as various other replicas.

* Real or Fake?

An old technique of recognizing diamonds is to do a scratch examination. This requires scratching a diamond with an additional diamond which is destructive as well as is seldom used nowadays. The finest as well as most reliable means to examine for diamonds is to utilize testers that make use of thermal conductivity. These testers are composed of battery powered thermistors installed with a retractable copper pointer. This tester works by infusing the warmth into the checked stone and after that the tool measures the amount of warm that it conducts. Nevertheless thermal conductivity testers functions best to differentiate rubies and also its various other simulants, it will certainly not assist identify lab created or artificial rocks. To be able to identify these, particular optical techniques are required. Laboratories make use of methods such as spectroscopy, microscopy and also luminescence in order to figure out a certain stones origin. The average individual could utilize loupes and microscopes to differentiate synthetic stones. All-natural diamonds usually have small blemishes and also defects such as inclusions or some sort of international material, which will certainly not be found in synthetics.

What You Had to Know When Purchasing a Ruby Ring

Centralia

Just how are diamond cut grades designated?

This is where things begin to get complicated. The methods made use of to quantitatively evaluate the high quality of a cut vary. The method the GIA establishes exactly what a diamond's cut quality should be, for example, differs in extremely specific means from the way other certifiers like the AGS do it. In many cases, these organizations don't divulge the precise details of the processes they make use of.

The shape of a ruby additionally makes a distinction with regard to how its cut quality is established. Although there are some fundamental standards that stay the exact same for any kind of diamond, the specific techniques made use of to grade a round ruby's cut are different from those utilized to quality a heart-shaped ruby's cut.

The rest of this description will concentrate on round rubies, as this is without a doubt one of the most typical diamond shape. One of the elements impacting the cut quality of a rounded ruby is the number of aspects it has. Facets are the flat, specified areas on the surface of a ruby. The aspects on round rubies are generally triangular. Currently, it's thought that the perfect round ruby should have 33 aspects on the crown (the area of the ruby that sits over the girdle, which itself is the best factor of the diamond) as well as 25 on the structure (the lower, much longer area of the ruby). When there are flaws on the surface of the ruby, cutters could add added elements in order to obscure them. This causes a degradation in the general high quality of the cut.

While the element matter is normally set as an excellent way of judging the top quality of a diamond cut, there are various other points on which gemologists frequently differ. A few of the various other variables made use of by some authorities in order to help determine cut qualities consist of the elevation of the ruby's crown, the deepness of the structure, the diameter of the table (the top of the crown), and also the angles of the crown as well as pavilion.

The American Standard benchmark for rounded rubies calls for a crown elevation of 16.2%, structure deepness of 43.1%, as well as table size of 53% of the overall band diameter. The Perfect Dazzling standard, nonetheless, asks for 19.2% crown elevation, 40% pavilion depth, and also 56.5% table size. While these differences could be hard for novices to determine, they are a great illustration of the difficulties related to producing a basic assessment of a ruby's cut.

Although there are some arguments regarding the exact proportions that make up the perfect diamond cut, for prospective ruby customers, the most important thing to recognize is that diamond certifications supplied by organizations like the AGS and GIA are trustworthy and meaningful. Trusted diamond vendors base the costs at which they deal rubies on the cut along with the remainder of the "4 Cs." When you buy a diamond, you don't need to stress over the understanding of exactly what makes a great ruby cut transforming so much that the value of your diamond will certainly be significantly influenced.

Which ruby reduced grade stands for the most effective worth?

Which kind of diamond is best for you mainly relies on your spending plan. For purchasers who want to acquire them, vendors generally advise rubies with the greatest feasible cut grades. Nevertheless, this might be due to some self-interest on their part.

The other 3 Cs have an influence on ruby rates as well, so it can be tough to evaluate the exact distinction in cost between an Ideal or Exceptional cut ruby and an Extremely Great cut. For casual customers and budget-conscious investors alike, rubies with a Really Good or Great cut quality can stand for an exceptional worth. This is because, while they can be much more economical than otherwise equivalent Ideal or Outstanding cut diamonds, the noticeable difference in quality is minimal.

At the same time, do not hesitate to use your discretion. If, for instance, you stumble upon a ruby with a Perfect reduced score which has great scores in the other classifications and is still within your spending plan, then you need to absolutely consider it, as long as you're taking care of a trusted vendor.

5 Tips on What To Look For When Buying Diamonds For Wedding Rings

A wedding, or an engagement in  Centralia, is one of the most important events in every couple’s life. One of the best ways of making the experience memorable is by choosing the right ring to symbolize the love you have for one another. While most couples would like to get the most beautiful ring they can lay their hands on, budgetary restrictions can be a challenge. However, it is possible to find an ideal ring based on your budget.

For anyone looking for precious diamonds for engagement rings and wedding rings in Centralia, they should consider going about the process carefully. There are various dealers in the market, some of who may sell you fake diamonds. Here are a few useful tips on what to look for when looking for precious diamonds for engagement or wedding rings.

Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in Centralia. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

5. There is nothing as unfortunate as buying diamonds for your special event only to realize that they are of poor quality, or that they were stolen. To avoid such an eventuality, always ask the dealer in Centralia to show you the copy of diamond certification.

With these tips, you should be able to make the right choice when buying precious diamonds in Centralia for you engagement or wedding.

Centralia How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
