Consider the Diamond Cut

1. Any expert will tell you that the cut is the most important thing to consider when buying diamonds in Clearlake. The main reason behind this is that the cut usually influences the sparkle. A diamond may be clear and feature a high quality color grade, but if the cut is poor, it may still appear dull. The dealer you buy from should be able to cut your diamond in the proper proportions. If your budget can allow it, choose a diamond with the highest cut grade.

Diamond Color

2.  Contrary to common belief, lack of color in your diamonds denotes a higher color grade. Some people go for pale yellow diamond, without knowing that it is low quality. To avoid such an experience, ask the diamond dealer to give you grade H or higher. Near colorless diamond ranges from grade G to J, but it may be quite expensive.

Clarity Diamonds can also be chosen based on their clarity levels.

3. This is usually not a very important factor to consider, considering that the precious stones usually come with imperfections, known as inclusions. These tiny imperfections may not be easy to detect, and they may only be seen through a microscope. However, the fewer there are, the higher the clarity grade of your diamonds. If your budget can be stretched further, consider buying grade VS1 grade or higher.

Consider the Diamond’s Carat Weight

4.  Unlike common belief, carat does not mean the size of the diamond, but its actual weight. Carat and cut must be considered side by side, because no matter the size of the diamond, a poor cut grade can make your precious stones look smaller. Another important fact to keep in mind is that the more the weight of the diamond, the more you will pay for it. Therefore, you should consider going for a less heavy stone with a high grade cut.

Ask for Proof of Certification

Clearlake How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all vendors provide ruby grading lab reports (also known as ruby top quality records) to their consumers. So my general suggestions to you is to maintain your cash in your pocket when taking care of such jewelry experts.

Just acquire a ruby interaction ring if it features the initial diamond high quality report.

A lab report is an independent evaluation of the 4Cs of a loose ruby and also consists of a plotted layout of the stone's quality attributes and also a graphic depiction of the rock's proportions. Having such a report allows you to compare rubies of different top qualities and eventually aids you make an even more educated purchasing choice.

A merchant could cut edges as well as not give a laboratory report or a deceitful seller might give a fake one due to the time, problem as well as expenditure he'll bear to obtaining a stone graded.

Yeah - there is a rate for grading a ruby (though that expense is eventually paid by the consumer), plus the shipping and insurance policy charges for sending out the ruby to the laboratory. As well as allow us not neglect the possibility price of a jeweler not having the diamond in his store available for a couple of weeks while the grading takes location.

Nevertheless, a ruby rating record might likewise not be readily available because the costs to obtaining one may impact also heavily on the last price of the ring. As an example, a 0.3 ct ruby ring setting you back $250 state, may cost around $75 to be graded as well as have the report number etched on the band on the diamond. As you look for that excellent ruby interaction ring for your sweetheart, you'll find that there is a hodgepodge of laboratories claiming to provide trustworthy diamond grading records. But I would only put my loan on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Lab News

Yes, all diamond quality reports are not produced equal. Within the industry, it is a consensus that both top laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Gem Profession Lab) and also the AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Qualification and Assurance Laboratory) additionally offers extremely concerned records or "diamond certifications" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the best global track record for freedom as well as consistency. As a result of their constant shade as well as clarity strictness guidelines, the globe's biggest and also most pricey diamonds have actually been sent out there for rating years. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for round great rubies.

AGS makes use of the strictest cut standards in the sector. It uses a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that could grade numerous diamond forms. As a matter of fact, it is the only cut grading system that is recognized by the clinical neighborhood.

What is more, its Ruby Quality Paper uses a special as well as proprietary 0 to 10 grading system to assess the 4 Cs - a system which is simpler to comprehend than GIA's grading system. In reality, AGS even goes the added step by relating their 0-10 score scale to other types of score. For example, the traditional VS1 diamond clarity ranking is a 3 on the AGS Ruby Top Quality Record.

Ruby Reporting - The Drawbacks

1. Diamond grading is not standard or regulated and also thus you may find tier 2 laboratories that employ looser guidelines to the tier 1 grading labs mentioned above. If you buy a ruby that has been rated by a tier 2 lab, you might wind up paying more for a lesser quality ruby. So for instance, a ruby rated a "F" in shade at a rate 2 laboratory might get a G, H, or reduced color rating at a more trustworthy laboratory. The sector also discounts rubies rated by lower well-known labs by regarding 15-30% or more. So either you only get a ruby rated by a rate 1 lab or you approve that you may be acquiring a minimal high quality ruby compared to exactly what is specified on the report if that diamond is graded by a lesser well-known lab.

2. Several big store have significant agreements with minimal recognized laboratories with "softer" diamond grading guidelines. Some of these softer labs put "suggested substitute worths" on the lab records - values which are greater than just what stores means offer the diamonds for. So a sales representative in a store could say to you, "Check out the lot you are obtaining right here. We are selling you this ruby interaction ring for $2500 but the report claims that the suggested replacement value is $4000." Wow - what a deal - NOT! This is why it is much better that you trust only independent rate 1 labs.

Also keep in mind that trustworthy ruby rating records are not evaluations as well as don't offer evaluation figures. Diamond assessments are frequently blatantly filled with air and also are not something you'll wish to rely upon.

3. Ruby records are riddled with disclaimers that define that absolutely nothing is "certified" or guaranteed which the laboratories are not accountable for mistakes. As a matter of fact, the GIA supplies a disclaimer of kinds on their web site relating to making use of the word "certify." The site claims:

"It is inaccurate to state that students, grads, their organisations, or certain gems are "accredited" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of America does not accredit anybody or anything. Neither a trainee nor a graduate that has actually been granted a certification or diploma, neither a treasure which has been rated or identified by GIA has been certified by GIA".

So it is feasible that you the customer is left holding the bag needs to an error in a record is later uncovered. Courts have actually often ruled that vendors, not labs, are responsible for such mistakes. Why? Since the labs indicated in advance that their reports couldn't be held accountable.

The good news is, there are a pair means to give on your own much more purchaser protection:

A. You could fly to India where jewelers use a life time buyback plan to their consumers. Also expensive to fly?

B. You might find among the 20% people jewelers who offer totally bound diamonds. These are diamonds that are marketed with lifetime damage, life time trade-in and life time buyback plans.

C. Not as great a treatment as acquiring a totally bonded ruby but you might buy a ruby that features an actual "certification" as well as not a record. "Licensed diamonds do feature warranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Qualification Some sellers describe a "diamond record" as a "certified ruby" yet practically this is not remedy. From a lawful perspective, a ruby report is a just a skilled point of view though in truth, elements of a ruby rating report are not simply viewpoints.

For instance, a ruby's carat weight (weight) could be properly figured out as well as its cut grade by measuring its optical effectiveness or by referring to a computer system model. A certificate on the various other hand is a declaration of fact - a paper for which the company approves legal obligation as well as will certainly make restitution to the customer for blunders.

Some top diamond grading laboratories use both records as well as certificates. AGS supplies Ruby Top quality Documents (non-certified records) and Ruby High quality Certificates. Diamond Top quality Certificates are prepared specifically for AGS retail jewelers and also provides warranties from participating American Treasure Culture member stores.

GCAL licenses it's diamond grading additionally. Its 100% money-back assurance policy is valid for a period of two years from the date on the applicable certificate. This policy makes certain the accuracy of the cut, shade and clarity qualities and the carat weight.

A record or certificate should will have a number on it that could or might not be etched on a diamond. You will certainly have the ability to go into that number on the internet site of the certifying laboratory to check a report's legitimacy.

Elements Of A Ruby Grading Record Diamond grading reports are always developing yet specific element should continue to be the same. As an example, the:

The Report #. This number is given and tape-recorded in a lab's record and might or may not be engraved on a ruby's band. You could get in the record number on a grading lab's web site to examine the authenticity of the ruby high quality record or to obtain even more info concerning the diamond. Forming & Facet Style: This is the synopsis as well as the cutting design used for the facet arrangement. There are 3 basic element styles - "brilliant cut, step cut and also mixed cutting design" and also 12 basic forms that include notables such as round great as well as princess cut" rubies.

Measurements: This refers to dimension (not weight) of a ruby. Dimension includes dimensions such as size, width, weight and also size. A dimension is normally detailed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Measurements play a significant role in just how a diamond glows.

Carat weight Weight: The weight of a diamond is determined to the hundredth of a carat weight and some also supply such procedure to the thousandth of a carat (1.123 ct.). Carat weight is one of the most objective as well as the easiest to recognize of the 4Cs since all one needs to do is weight the rock. Shade Grade: This informs you the degree of shade absence in the diamond. The much less shade the greater the quality.

Rubies are typically graded from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You ought to never see diamond color array such as (G-H, I-J-K, and more) on a diamond record. You should only see shade ranges on appraisals for stones that are mounted.

Clearness Grade: Virtually every ruby has actually internal blemishes called additions as well as outside blemishes called imperfections. A diamond is graded according to the size, type, location as well as amount of these defects.

Clarity grades vary from Remarkable (FL) - Included. Labs use a couple experts to grade the clearness of a diamond in order to create a more precise reading.

Cut Quality: A lot more current ruby records consist of a cut grade for typical round great rubies. Cut takes into account the luster, fire and also scintillation of the ruby. Cut grade ranges from Outstanding - Poor.

Other components you could find on a ruby report consist of the gloss, symmetry, fluorescence and also percentage. Armed with this information, you are much better able making an assessment of the top quality of diamond that is placed in an engagement ring.

* History of Diamonds

The initial tape-recorded diamond dates back around 800 B.C. in India. Some think it also dated back 6,000 years earlier. The diamonds were made use of as ornamental purposes as well as as talismans to prevent bad and provide security in fight. During the Dark Ages, rubies were also mentioned to be used as a medical aid. Religious medical professionals also informed patients that if they hold a ruby in a hand and make the indication of the cross would, it would certainly heal as well as disease and heal injuries.

Rubies came to be extra preferred throughout the 19th century because of discovery of diamond deposits in South Africa. This discovery causes increased supply, enhanced cutting and also brightening methods, and also growth in economic climate. In 1979, rock hounds found the Argyle pipeline in Australia which to this date is the richest ruby deposit worldwide. Argyle, given that then, alone is responsible for supplying over one third of the globe's diamonds annually.

* Diamonds: How are they created?

Rubies includes an allotrope of carbons that are formed in high-pressure, high-temperature problems. Rubies are generated 90 miles under the Earth's surface area at temperature levels of about 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Rubies are formed deep within the planet and also at some point, over extremely lengthy durations of time, push their way to the earth's surface area, generally with volcanic eruptions.

The age of these diamonds from beneath the surface of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years of ages! When rubies are formed and also begin their climb to the earth's surface, they experience channels where the lava from the volcano increases to the surface area, selecting up rubies along the means as well as at some point transferring them on the surface, where they are at some point found as well as extracted.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are 4 distinctive characteristics that establish the worth and also high quality of a ruby. These are the color, cut, clearness and also carat. Or else recognized as the 4 C's of a diamond. In the adhering to, we will chat concerning these attributes thoroughly.

* Shade

In the last e-newsletter, we touch based on the shade of gemstones as being one of the most essential feature due to the reality that shade is the most apparent attribute. The excellent diamond must appear clear as well as colorless yet this is not the situation for all diamonds. Rubies can be available in any type of color of the rainbow most common shade is a shade of yellow or brown. The Geological Institute of America(GIA) have actually devised a guideline to quality diamond shade. This guideline consists of a lettering system that ranges from the alphabet D - Z. Please see below:

D E F No Color G H I J Virtually Anemic K L M Faintly tinted, can not barely be seen and also normally yellow in color N O P Q R Gently tinted, typically yellow. Can be seen with the naked eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, begins with yellow and also proceeds to brown

* Clarity

The cut a ruby is identified by the diamond's proportion such as its shape, width as well as depth. The cut identifies just what is called the diamond's "luster". Even if the ruby itself has perfect shade and also clearness, with an inadequate cut the diamond will have a plain luster. This is since the cut establishes just how light travels within the diamond. The Gemological Institute of America has additionally created a clearness grading system to rate diamond clearness. This grading system includes Remarkable (Fl), Internally Flawless (IF), Really Extremely A Little Consisted Of (VV1 or VV2), Really Somewhat Included(VS1 or VS2), Somewhat Consisted Of(SI1 or SI2), and Consisted Of(I1, I2, as well as I3). Although this system had been contributed to the diamond market, it is not widely used. This is due to the reality that it took a whole lot of method as well as training to incorporate it.

* Cut

The cut a diamond is determined by the ruby's proportion such as its form, size and also deepness. The cut identifies exactly what is called the ruby's "luster". Also if the diamond itself has ideal shade and also quality, with a poor cut the diamond will certainly have a dull sparkle. This is since the cut figures out exactly how light journeys within the diamond.

There are 3 kinds of cuts that can figure out the ruby's luster. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is also deep and also excellent cut. A shallow cut is a cut of a ruby that is too reduced, that light traveling through it is shed under of the rock as well as does not come back right into sight. This cut makes a ruby show up lifeless and plain. A cut that is unfathomable is a cut that is expensive, that light taking a trip via it escapes with the sides and also dims the rock. An ideal cut is a best cut on a ruby that reflects light to the top of the rock, giving it ideal radiance.

* Carat

As stated on the last e-newsletter, a single carat weight(ct) evaluates about 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller sized carat weight rubies that evaluate less than a carat, it is expressed as points (pt). Factors are 1/100 of a carat weight. Carat weight of a diamond is important due to the fact that larger rubies are rarer compared to smaller ones, so generally the larger the ruby the more costly it is. There is no standard grading system or representation that can show different carat weight. This is since there are a lot of variations of rubies in shape as well as cut, that makes rocks of comparable weight, look various.

* Replica Diamonds

Since diamonds are the most valuable as well as rarest of all the gems, efforts have actually been made to replicate or also enhance diamonds making use of less costly choices. A great deal of times, honest blunders have actually been made as well as these choices or other gems such as spinel were often perplexed with actual diamonds. Sometimes, some unethical people aim to sell these choices to misfortunate purchasers in order to earnings. Below we will certainly discuss concerning these options and means to determine them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

Synthetic diamonds are rubies that are expanded manufactured in a lab. The first known cases of diamond synthesis were asserted to be recorded in between 1879 - 1928, however this was never ever verified. It wasn't up until the 1940's where study started in the United States, Sweden, Soviet Union started investigating. Artificial diamonds are or else referred to as High Stress High Temperature Level (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) diamonds. The name of both these artificial rubies stems from the processes utilized to produce them. Some of these artificial rubies might either have better, lower or comparable features than that of a diamond. Consequently, these artificial rubies are made use of for abrasives, reducing and also brightening tools, as well as switches in power terminals.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond substances that are utilized to duplicate the appearance or even the shape of a ruby. One of the most fundamental as well as popular simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at simple sight could shimmer even more than a diamond as well as it is much less thick, suggesting that a 1 carat weight CZ will be much larger compared to a 1 carat weight diamond. Nowadays, an extra popular simulant is moissanite, which has all the exact same characteristics of a diamond. These characteristics include firmness (Moissanite-9.25 and diamond-10 in Mohs range), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 and diamond -2.42) and also dispersion (Moissanite -.104 and diamond -.044). This makes it tough to separate both at simple view as well as would frequently need testers to discriminate. In the next section we will talk about the best ways to identify moissanites and other replicas.

* Real or Counterfeit?

An old approach of identifying diamonds is to do a scratch test. This requires scratching a diamond with another ruby which is damaging and is hardly ever utilized nowadays. The ideal as well as most trustworthy way to check for rubies is to make use of testers that utilize thermal conductivity. These testers contain battery powered thermistors placed with a retractable copper tip. This tester works by injecting the warmth onto the tested rock as well as then the device gauges the amount of warm that it conducts. Nevertheless thermal conductivity testers functions best to identify diamonds and its other simulants, it will certainly not help differentiate lab developed or synthetic rocks. To be able to identify these, certain optical strategies are needed. Laboratories make use of methods such as spectroscopy, microscopy as well as luminescence in order to establish a specific rocks origin. The average person can utilize loupes and microscopic lens to identify synthetic stones. Natural diamonds typically have small imperfections as well as defects such as incorporations or some kind of foreign product, which will certainly not be located in synthetics.

Clearlake How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Diamonds are normally readily available in an extremely variety of colors. Many individuals learn about anemic rubies and also GIA's shade grading system that is utilized to classify a ruby's body color ... you recognize D, E, F, and so on. This color grading system is only utilized to categorize the most typical ruby body color of yellow nevertheless anytime a ruby is discovered in an additional color like pink, blue, environment-friendly, and so on; after that this diamond is referred to as a "" expensive diamond"".

Natural Fancy diamonds could be really costly and also numerous times much more costly compared to a similar size anemic ruby. A great instance of a Fancy diamond is the infamous 45.52 carat weight expensive deep blue ruby, the Hope Ruby, which gets on screen in the Smithsonian Natural Background Museum in Washington, DC.

A shade boosted ruby is a 100% all-natural diamond that has had its shade transformed. And also finest of all, shade improved rubies come in a really vast option of colors at very inexpensive prices!

A little bit of background- For several, years it has been popular that a ruby's shade can be "" enhanced"" by putting a little bit of colored compound externally of a ruby and also much like magic ... a diamond that had a recognizable yellowish color would alter to a more attractive near colorless ruby. However, this kind of shade enhanced diamond might transform back to its initial body shade if this tinted substance was accidentally eliminated. In more current years, the modern technology of shade boosted diamonds has actually gone very high tech. It is now possible to completely transform the shade of a diamond! These procedures are thought about permanent since it does continue to be stable when revealed to day-to-day normal problems. The shade will certainly not discolor if subjected to sunshine or be washed off by rough chemicals.

How is it done? The desired end result of any one of these treatments is to have a much more valuable ruby. A much less valuable diamond would be a diamond that has a low body color or occasionally a lower quality. The color boosted ruby treatment companies recognize if they begin off with a certain sort of ruby as well as procedure it for a certain quantity of time that they ought to wind up with a specific shade however it does not constantly work in this way. This is a science that does need some art in their procedures ... the only process that provides regular outcomes is the layer process.

The three processes are as adheres to- Process # 1- HPHT Shade Boosted Diamonds- High Pressure/ Heat (HPHT) therapy could improve the color of certain sorts of brownish diamonds and also hence raise their value. General Electric has actually established a procedure that pretty much is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's creation in nature. The color improved ruby will certainly be warmed up to a very heat under a very high, stabilized stress. Faults in the crystal framework are then rearranged causing an alteration of the ruby's shade. Due to the fact that the conditions of HPHT are really comparable to diamond's initial development, only a well geared up lab will certainly have the ability to favorably identify this sort of color improved diamond. HPHT was initially made use of to transform yellowish diamonds right into more valuable fancy tinted boosted rubies, and now it is also used to change some undesirable brownish rubies into more desirable anemic tinted boosted rubies.

Process # 2- Irradiated Shade Boosted Diamonds- OK ... do not start obtaining all delighted because you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% secure process that is extremely just like exactly what is used to protect food by subjecting it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color boosted diamond procedure is carried out in numerous different means however the outcomes are all the same. You start with a low shade (P, Q, R, and so on) 100% natural diamond that has currently been cut and polished, after that it is subjected to a stream of rapid electrons. Throughout this part of the process the diamond will certainly resort to a really dark shade since several of the atoms in the diamond's crystal framework have now been dislocated as well as this consequently has influenced the means light go through the diamond. Next the diamond goes through a controlled heating (annealing) procedure, this enables several of those atoms to move (partially fixed) in order to acquire a desired shade.

Refine # 3- Layered Shade Boosted Diamonds- The layer on refined rubies refers to a slim synthetic layer that alters the shade of the diamond. The layer can either be of the wanted shade or can cause a colored interference-effect. Regrettably sometimes this procedure is done to trick a customer. It is a reasonably easy procedure to perform, it has actually been around for years (although the finishings products are much better now), and it does not need a great deal of expensive advanced tools. Recently, I have actually seen some pink coated rubies on the market, they are really eye-catching ... as well as obviously you would certainly need to purchase them recognizing that they have actually been layered as well as follow your jewelry expert's guidelines about possessing and also taking care of these shade enhanced rubies. The coating can be used to the whole of a diamond's surface area, just all-time low of the ruby, or to a slim area near the girdle. A well-applied finishing could alter the shade by one or even more color quality. Some finishes could be gotten rid of with steaming in acid, solid cleansing options, and even family chemicals. In some cases dots or bigger locations of purple or blue ink are paintinged on the ruby to help counteract a yellow-colored shade. The diamond's setup will generally cover the dots, so they are tough to see in a mounted stone.

So, is a color improved ruby right for you? Maybe ... natural fancy shade diamonds could be gorgeous yet they are pricey! Shade enhanced rubies are inexpensive and also enable many individuals to own a brilliantly colored diamond. Ask your local jewelry expert if they have any Fancy rubies ... either all-natural or color improved rubies. It is always interesting, as well as enjoyable, to take a look at something different!

Under normal wear the irradiated as well as HPHT color improved diamonds will certainly have no worry of the shade fading away. The only factor to consider will be when you have to have any type of sort of service done on the item of fashion jewelry. If this kind of color enhanced diamond is subjected to too much quantities of warmth it might affect the color. The jeweler will have to know that the diamond is a shade improved ruby prior to any type of work is done and afterwards the jeweler will certainly have the ability to choose on the most effective strategy. Color improved rubies are currently also utilized as the tiny accent diamonds around a bigger anemic ruby. There are lots of interesting pieces of precious jewelry readily available with tiny blue, yellow, black, or eco-friendly color improved rubies.

Currently that you learn about color boosted rubies as well as a person tries to offer you on what they call a natural expensive tinted diamond however it goes to an incredibly bargain rate ... you will certainly understand that something simply does not appear right regarding the offer. A record from a reputable grading laboratory must go along with 100% natural Fancy tinted diamonds that are marketed as natural. If you manage a credible firm and you have actually been comforted regarding what you are getting, then you will decrease the possibility of something negative happening to you. As with any type of scenario including a pricey purchase of something that few people are experienceded in, education and learning should be a crucial part of your strategy. This is much more crucial if you intend to buy a shade boosted diamond. Bud Boland has been in the jewelry organisation for 40 years and also has actually done everything from watchmaking, diamond setup, fashion jewelry making, as well as has actually been a Jeweler for nearly 35 years. He is a Grad Jeweler from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), which is also the location where he was a Trainer. He has instructed concerning diamonds to thousands of students from all around the globe

The Big 4 Cs For Loose Diamonds

Clearlake

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
