Tavares How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all sellers provide diamond grading lab records (aka ruby top quality reports) to their customers. So my general guidance to you is to keep your cash in your pocket when handling such jewelry experts.

Just buy a diamond interaction ring if it features the original diamond top quality report.

A laboratory report is an independent analysis of the 4Cs of a loose ruby as well as consists of a plotted representation of the stone's clearness qualities as well as a visuals representation of the stone's percentages. Having such a record permits you to compare rubies of various high qualities and ultimately aids you make an even more notified buying choice.

A store might reduce edges and not give a lab report or an underhanded vendor could give a fake one as a result of the time, problem and also expense he'll birth to getting a rock graded.

Yeah - there is a cost for grading a ruby (though that expense is ultimately paid by the consumer), plus the delivery and insurance policy fees for sending out the ruby to the laboratory. As well as allow us not forget the opportunity price of a jewelry expert not having the diamond in his store available for a couple of weeks while the grading takes place.

Nevertheless, a diamond grading record could also not be readily available since the expenses to obtaining one might impact also greatly on the last rate of the ring. As an example, a 0.3 ct ruby ring setting you back $250 state, could set you back around $75 to be rated and have the report number etched on the girdle on the diamond. As you look for that optimal diamond interaction ring for your sweetie, you'll discover that there is an alphabet soup of laboratories claiming to offer respectable diamond grading reports. Yet I would only place my loan on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Laboratory Information

Yes, all ruby quality records are not developed equivalent. Within the market, it is a consensus that the two premier laboratories are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Gem Profession Laboratory) and the AGS (American Gem Culture Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Certification and Guarantee Lab) also provides very concerned reports or "diamond certificates" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the toughest international reputation for independence and uniformity. As a result of their constant color as well as clarity strictness standards, the globe's biggest and most expensive diamonds have been sent out there for grading decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL added a two-dimensional cut grading system for round brilliant rubies.

AGS uses the strictest cut standards in the industry. It uses a three-dimensional light efficiency metric that can quality numerous ruby shapes. Actually, it is the only cut grading system that is recognized by the scientific community.

What is even more, its Diamond High quality Document utilizes an unique as well as exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to assess the 4 Cs - a system which is less complicated to comprehend than GIA's grading system. In reality, AGS even goes the extra step by corresponding their 0-10 rating scale to other forms of ranking. For instance, the traditional VS1 diamond clarity score is a 3 on the AGS Ruby Quality Document.

Diamond Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standard or regulated as well as therefore you might stumble upon rate 2 labs that employ looser guidelines to the tier 1 grading labs pointed out over. If you buy a ruby that has been graded by a tier 2 laboratory, you could wind up paying much more for a lower quality ruby. So as an example, a diamond ranked a "F" in color at a tier 2 laboratory might get a G, H, or lower shade ranking at a much more credible laboratory. The market additionally marks down rubies graded by minimal well-known labs by regarding 15-30% or even more. So either you just buy a diamond rated by a tier 1 laboratory or you accept that you could be getting a lesser top quality ruby compared to exactly what is mentioned on the record if that diamond is rated by a minimal well-known laboratory.

2. Several big store have big contracts with lower well-known labs with "softer" ruby grading guidelines. Several of these softer labs put "recommended replacement values" on the lab reports - worths which are more than exactly what stores plans sell the diamonds for. So a salesperson in a chain store could state to you, "Take a look at the good deal you are getting right here. We are selling you this ruby interaction ring for $2500 yet the report states that the recommended substitute worth is $4000." Wow - what a bargain - NOT! This is why it is much better that you trust only independent tier 1 labs.

Also remember that respectable diamond grading records are not appraisals and do not use assessment figures. Diamond assessments are frequently grossly filled with air and are not something you'll intend to rely upon.

3. Ruby records are filled with disclaimers that define that nothing is "certified" or ensured as well as that the labs are not responsible for errors. In fact, the GIA offers a disclaimer of types on their internet site regarding making use of words "accredit." The site says:

"It is incorrect to state that trainees, graduates, their organisations, or certain gems are "certified" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not license anybody or anything. Neither a trainee neither a grad who has actually been granted a certification or diploma, neither a treasure which has actually been graded or identified by GIA has actually been certified by GIA".

So it is possible that you the customer is left holding the bag ought to a mistake in a record is later on uncovered. Courts have frequently ruled that sellers, not labs, are accountable for such mistakes. Why? Because the laboratories suggested ahead of time that their reports could not be held responsible.

Thankfully, there are a couple means to provide yourself extra customer defense:

A. You might fly to India where jewelers provide a lifetime buyback plan to their clients. As well costly to fly?

B. You might locate among the 20% of US jewelry experts who market totally adhered rubies. These are rubies that are offered with lifetime damage, lifetime trade-in as well as life time buyback policies.

C. Not as excellent a solution as purchasing a totally adhered diamond however you could acquire a ruby that features an actual "certification" and not a report. "Certified rubies do include warranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Accreditation Some sellers describe a "ruby record" as a "licensed ruby" yet practically this is not fix. From a legal viewpoint, a ruby report is a just an expert viewpoint though in reality, facets of a diamond rating report are not just viewpoints.

As an example, a diamond's carat weight (weight) can be precisely established along with its cut grade by measuring its optical effectiveness or by describing a computer design. A certification on the various other hand is a statement of truth - a document for which the provider approves lawful duty as well as will certainly make restitution to the customer for mistakes.

Some leading ruby grading laboratories provide both reports and certifications. AGS uses Diamond Top quality Records (non-certified reports) and additionally Diamond High quality Certificates. Ruby Top quality Certificates are ready solely for AGS retail jewelry experts and offers guaranties from taking part American Gem Society participant shops.

GCAL accredits it's ruby grading additionally. Its 100% money-back warranty policy is legitimate for a duration of 2 years from the day on the applicable certification. This plan ensures the accuracy of the cut, shade and quality qualities as well as the carat weight.

A report or certification need to will certainly have a number on it that could or might not be inscribed on a ruby. You will have the ability to get in that number on the site of the licensing laboratory to check a record's credibility.

Aspects Of A Ruby Grading Record Diamond grading reports are constantly advancing but certain element should stay the very same. As an example, the:

The Record #. This number is offered as well as tape-recorded in a laboratory's record as well as may or could not be etched on a ruby's girdle. You can get in the record number on a rating lab's internet site to check the authenticity of the diamond quality record or to obtain more details about the ruby. Shape & Facet Design: This is the summary as well as the reducing design made use of for the aspect plan. There are 3 standard element designs - "dazzling cut, action cut and mixed cutting design" and 12 basic forms that include notables such as round great and also princess cut" rubies.

Dimensions: This refers to dimension (not weight) of a ruby. Dimension consists of measurements such as size, size, weight as well as size. A measurement is typically listed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Measurements play a significant function in how a diamond glows.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is measured to the hundredth of a carat and also some also provide such procedure to the thousandth of a carat (1.123 ct.). Carat is one of the most objective and also the most convenient to recognize of the 4Cs due to the fact that all one needs to do is weight the rock. Shade Quality: This tells you the level of shade absence in the ruby. The much less color the greater the quality.

Rubies are typically graded from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You ought to never see diamond shade array such as (G-H, I-J-K, as well as so on) on a ruby record. You need to only see shade arrays on assessments for stones that are mounted.

Quality Grade: Basically every ruby has inner flaws called additions and outside imperfections called acnes. A diamond is graded according to the size, type, place as well as quantity of these flaws.

Clarity qualities vary from Remarkable (FL) - Consisted Of. Labs utilize a pair experts to grade the clarity of a ruby in order to generate a much more exact reading.

Cut Quality: A lot more current ruby reports include a cut quality for conventional round great diamonds. Cut takes right into factor to consider the brilliance, fire and scintillation of the ruby. Cut grade varies from Superb - Poor.

Various other aspects you might find on a diamond report include the polish, symmetry, fluorescence as well as percentage. Armed with this info, you are better able to make an analysis of the high quality of ruby that is installed in an engagement ring.

The Big 4 Cs For Loose Diamonds

Tavares

Just how are ruby cut qualities designated?

This is where points begin to get made complex. The methods utilized to quantitatively assess the top quality of a cut differ. The means the GIA establishes exactly what a ruby's cut grade must be, for instance, varies in really certain methods from the means various other certifiers like the AGS do it. In the majority of situations, these organizations don't divulge the specific details of the processes they utilize.

The form of a diamond likewise makes a distinction with regard to exactly how its cut grade is determined. Although there are some basic requirements that stay the same for any type of type of diamond, the precise techniques made use of to grade a round diamond's cut are different from those made use of to grade a heart-shaped diamond's cut.

The remainder of this explanation will certainly concentrate on round rubies, as this is by much one of the most usual diamond shape. One of the factors influencing the cut grade of a round ruby is the variety of elements it has. Aspects are the level, specified areas externally of a diamond. The aspects on round rubies are normally triangular. Currently, it's assumed that the ideal round ruby need to have 33 elements on the crown (the area of the ruby that sits above the band, which itself is the best point of the ruby) and also 25 on the structure (the lower, much longer section of the diamond). When there are blemishes externally of the ruby, cutters might include added elements in order to obscure them. This results in a destruction in the total top quality of the cut.

While the aspect matter is typically concurred upon as a good means of evaluating the high quality of a ruby cut, there are other points on which gemologists often disagree. Some of the various other elements used by some authorities to assist determine cut grades include the height of the ruby's crown, the deepness of the structure, the size of the table (the top of the crown), as well as the angles of the crown and pavilion.

The American Criterion benchmark for rounded rubies asks for a crown elevation of 16.2%, pavilion deepness of 43.1%, as well as table diameter of 53% of the complete girdle size. The Ideal Brilliant criteria, nonetheless, requires 19.2% crown height, 40% structure depth, as well as 56.5% table diameter. While these differences might be hard for beginners to discern, they are an excellent illustration of the troubles related to producing an easy evaluation of a diamond's cut.

Although there are some arguments regarding the exact proportions that make up the excellent diamond cut, for potential diamond customers, the most vital thing to understand is that diamond accreditations given by organizations like the AGS and GIA are reliable and meaningful. Trustworthy diamond vendors base the prices at which they deal diamonds on the cut along with the rest of the "four Cs." When you buy a diamond, you do not need to worry regarding the perception of exactly what makes a great ruby cut changing so much that the value of your ruby will be dramatically influenced.

Which ruby cut grade stands for the most effective value?

Which type of ruby is best for you largely depends on your budget. For buyers that agree to purchase them, suppliers usually recommend rubies with the highest possible cut grades. Nonetheless, this may result from some self-involvement on their part.

The various other 3 Cs have an influence on diamond prices also, so it could be difficult to evaluate the exact distinction in rate between a Perfect or Outstanding cut diamond and a Really Good cut. For informal customers and also budget-conscious financiers alike, diamonds with an Excellent or Good cut quality can stand for an excellent worth. This is because, while they can be more economical compared to otherwise equivalent Suitable or Exceptional cut rubies, the noticeable distinction in high quality is very little.

At the exact same time, don't hesitate to use your discernment. If, as an example, you encounter a ruby with an Ideal cut rating which has good scores in the other classifications and is still within your budget plan, then you ought to definitely consider it, as long as you're taking care of a credible supplier.

* Background of Diamonds

The initial tape-recorded diamond go back around 800 B.C. in India. Some believe it also went back 6,000 years back. The diamonds were used as attractive objectives and as amulets to prevent wicked and also provide security in fight. During the Dark Ages, rubies were even mentioned to be made use of as a medical help. Spiritual doctors also informed people that if they hold a diamond in a hand as well as make the indication of the cross would certainly, it would treat as well as health problem and also heal injuries.

Diamonds became extra popular throughout the 19th century due to exploration of diamond down payments in South Africa. This discovery causes boosted supply, boosted reducing as well as polishing strategies, as well as growth in economy. In 1979, rock hounds located the Argyle pipe in Australia which to this date is the richest ruby deposit on the planet. Argyle, given that then, alone is liable for supplying over one third of the world's rubies each year.

* Diamonds: Just how are they formed?

Rubies includes an allotrope of carbons that are formed in high-pressure, high-temperature conditions. Rubies are generated 90 miles under the Planet's surface at temperature levels of about 2200 levels Fahrenheit. Diamonds are developed deep within the earth and also eventually, over exceptionally extended periods of time, push their way to the earth's surface area, usually with volcanic eruptions.

The age of these diamonds from below the surface of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years old! When rubies are created and start their climb to the planet's surface area, they experience channels where the magma from the volcano rises to the surface, grabbing diamonds in the process and also eventually depositing them externally, where they are eventually discovered and also extracted.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are 4 unique features that establish the worth and also quality of a ruby. These are the shade, cut, quality and also carat. Or else recognized as the 4 C's of a diamond. In the adhering to, we will discuss these attributes in information.

* Color

In the last e-newsletter, we touch based on the shade of gems as being one of the most crucial feature because of that color is one of the most apparent attribute. The ideal ruby ought to show up clear and also anemic however this is not the case for all rubies. Rubies can come in any shade of the rainbow most common color is a shade of yellow or brownish. The Geological Institute of America(GIA) have actually created a standard to quality diamond color. This guideline contains a text system that ranges from the alphabet D - Z. Please see below:

D E F No Color G H I J Almost Colorless K L M Faintly colored, can not barely be seen and also generally yellow in color N O P Q R Gently tinted, normally yellow. Can be seen with the nude eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, starts from yellow and proceeds to brownish

* Clarity

The cut a ruby is established by the ruby's percentage such as its form, width and depth. The cut establishes exactly what is called the diamond's "luster". Even if the diamond itself has ideal color and also quality, with a bad cut the ruby will have a boring luster. This is due to the fact that the cut identifies how light trips within the diamond. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. has also developed a clarity grading system to rate diamond clearness. This grading system consists of Perfect (Fl), Inside Perfect (IF), Very Extremely Slightly Consisted Of (VV1 or VV2), Really A Little Included(VS1 or VS2), A Little Consisted Of(SI1 or SI2), as well as Consisted Of(I1, I2, as well as I3). Although this system had actually been contributed to the diamond market, it is not commonly made use of. This is due to that it took a great deal of technique and training to integrate it.

* Cut

The cut a diamond is identified by the ruby's percentage such as its form, width and also depth. The cut identifies just what is called the ruby's "luster". Even if the diamond itself has excellent shade and quality, with an inadequate cut the diamond will certainly have a plain radiance. This is due to the fact that the cut figures out just how light travels within the ruby.

There are 3 sorts of cuts that can identify the diamond's sparkle. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is unfathomable and perfect cut. A superficial cut is a cut of a diamond that is as well low, that light traveling through it is shed on the base of the rock as well as does not return right into view. This cut makes a diamond show up lifeless and plain. A cut that is as well deep is a cut that is also high, that light taking a trip via it gets away via the sides and also dims the rock. An ideal cut is a perfect cut on a diamond that mirrors light to the top of the stone, offering it perfect brilliance.

* Carat

As specified on the last newsletter, a solitary carat(ct) weighs about 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller carat weight diamonds that evaluate much less compared to a carat weight, it is shared as points (pt). Points are 1/100 of a carat. Carat weight of a ruby is essential due to that larger rubies are rarer than smaller sized ones, so generally the larger the diamond the more pricey it is. There is no conventional grading system or layout that can reveal various carat weight. This is due to the fact that there are numerous variants of diamonds in shape as well as cut, that makes rocks of similar weight, look different.

* Imitation Diamonds

Because diamonds are the most beneficial as well as rarest of all the gemstones, efforts have been made to duplicate or also enhance diamonds utilizing less costly alternatives. A lot of times, truthful blunders have actually been made as well as these options or other gems such as spinel were in some cases puzzled with genuine rubies. In some cases, some unethical people attempt to market these choices to misfortunate customers in order to earnings. Below we will review regarding these choices and means to determine them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

Synthetic rubies are rubies that are grown produced in a lab. The first recognized instances of ruby synthesis were claimed to be recorded in between 1879 - 1928, yet this was never ever verified. It wasn't till the 1940's where research began in the USA, Sweden, Soviet Union began investigating. Artificial rubies are otherwise referred to as High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) diamonds or Chemical Vapor Deposit (CVD) rubies. The name of both these synthetic diamonds stems from the processes made use of to create them. Some of these synthetic diamonds might either have greater, lower or similar attributes compared to that of a ruby. Therefore, these artificial diamonds are used for abrasives, cutting and polishing devices, and switches in power plant.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond materials that are utilized to replicate the appearance or even the form of a ruby. The most standard and also well known simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at simple sight could sparkle even more than a ruby and it is less thick, implying that a 1 carat weight CZ will certainly be much larger compared to a 1 carat weight ruby. Nowadays, a much more preferred simulant is moissanite, which has just the same features of a diamond. These features consist of firmness (Moissanite-9.25 and also diamond-10 in Mohs scale), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 as well as diamond -2.42) as well as diffusion (Moissanite -.104 and also ruby -.044). This makes it tough to distinguish both at ordinary view as well as would certainly frequently need testers to discriminate. In the next section we will certainly discuss the best ways to identify moissanites as well as various other imitations.

* Real or Fake?

An old technique of identifying rubies is to do a scrape test. This needs damaging a diamond with another diamond which is destructive as well as is rarely used nowadays. The most effective as well as most reputable means to examine for diamonds is to make use of testers that make use of thermal conductivity. These testers include battery powered thermistors placed with a retracting copper suggestion. This tester functions by infusing the warmth into the examined stone as well as after that the device determines the quantity of warm that it carries out. However thermal conductivity testers works best to identify rubies and also its various other simulants, it will not aid distinguish lab created or artificial stones. To be able to determine these, certain optical methods are required. Laboratories utilize techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy and also luminescence in order to figure out a specific stones beginning. The ordinary person could use loupes as well as microscopes to differentiate synthetic stones. Natural diamonds usually have small imperfections as well as flaws such as inclusions or some kind of foreign product, which will not be found in synthetics.

How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Tavares

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
