* Background of Diamonds

The very first recorded diamond days back around 800 B.C. in India. Some think it also dated back 6,000 years ago. The diamonds were made use of as decorative objectives as well as as amulets to fend off wicked and supply security in battle. Throughout the Dark Ages, rubies were also stated to be used as a medical help. Religious doctors also told clients that if they hold a diamond in a hand and make the indication of the cross would certainly, it would heal as well as illness and heal injuries.

Rubies became extra prominent throughout the 19th century as a result of exploration of diamond down payments in South Africa. This discovery brings about boosted supply, improved reducing and brightening techniques, and also development in economic climate. In 1979, rock hounds found the Argyle pipe in Australia which to this day is the wealthiest diamond down payment in the globe. Argyle, because after that, alone is accountable for supplying over one third of the globe's diamonds each year.

* Diamonds: Just how are they formed?

Rubies includes an allotrope of carbons that are formed in high-pressure, high-temperature problems. Diamonds are generated 90 miles under the Planet's surface area at temperature levels of concerning 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. Diamonds are created deep within the planet and also eventually, over extremely extended periods of time, press their way to the earth's surface, typically with volcanic eruptions.

The age of these rubies from beneath the surface area of the earth are from 1 to 3.3 billion years old! When diamonds are formed and also begin their ascent to the planet's surface, they undergo networks where the lava from the volcano rises to the surface area, getting diamonds along the way and also ultimately transferring them externally, where they are eventually discovered and also mined.

* The 4 C's of Diamonds

There are 4 unique attributes that figure out the value and quality of a ruby. These are the shade, cut, quality and also carat weight. Or else recognized as the 4 C's of a diamond. In the following, we will certainly speak about these features carefully.

* Color

In the last e-newsletter, we touch based on the color of gemstones as being the most essential feature due to that color is the most obvious attribute. The best ruby needs to show up clear and colorless yet this is not the instance for all diamonds. Diamonds can come in any type of color of the rainbow most usual shade is a shade of yellow or brown. The Geological Institute of America(GIA) have actually developed a guideline to quality ruby shade. This standard is composed of a lettering system that varies from the alphabet D - Z. Please see below:

D E F No Shade G H I J Almost Colorless K L M Faintly tinted, can't hardly be seen and usually yellow in color N O P Q R Gently tinted, generally yellow. Could be seen with the naked eye S T U V W X Y Z Tinted, begins with yellow and advances to brown

* Clarity

The cut a diamond is established by the diamond's proportion such as its shape, width and deepness. The cut identifies exactly what is called the diamond's "sparkle". Also if the ruby itself has excellent color and clearness, with a bad cut the diamond will certainly have a dull brilliance. This is since the cut identifies exactly how light travels within the ruby. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. has actually also developed a clearness grading system to rank ruby clarity. This grading system includes Remarkable (Fl), Inside Flawless (IF), Very Really Slightly Included (VV1 or VV2), Extremely Somewhat Consisted Of(VS1 or VS2), Somewhat Included(SI1 or SI2), and also Consisted Of(I1, I2, and also I3). Although this system had actually been added to the ruby market, it is not commonly made use of. This is because of that it took a great deal of practice and training to integrate it.

* Cut

The cut a ruby is established by the ruby's proportion such as its form, size as well as depth. The cut identifies what is called the ruby's "luster". Even if the diamond itself has best color and clarity, with an inadequate cut the ruby will certainly have a plain sparkle. This is since the cut identifies just how light trips within the ruby.

There are 3 kinds of cuts that could determine the diamond's sparkle. These are a shallow cut, a cut that is unfathomable and also excellent cut. A shallow cut is a cut of a ruby that is too low, that light traveling through it is lost under of the stone and also does not come back right into sight. This cut makes a diamond show up drab and plain. A cut that is too deep is a cut that is expensive, that light traveling through it runs away through the sides and darkens the rock. A perfect cut is a best cut on a ruby that mirrors light to the top of the rock, offering it perfect radiance.

* Carat weight

As mentioned on the last newsletter, a solitary carat(ct) considers concerning 200 milligrams or.2 grams. For smaller carat rubies that evaluate much less than a carat, it is shared as factors (pt). Factors are 1/100 of a carat weight. Carat weight of a ruby is necessary due to that bigger rubies are rarer compared to smaller sized ones, so primarily the larger the ruby the extra expensive it is. There is no typical grading system or layout that could reveal various carat weight. This is since there are a lot of variants of rubies fit as well as cut, makings stones of similar weight, look different.

* Replica Diamonds

Given that rubies are the most beneficial and rarest of all the gemstones, initiatives have actually been made to replicate and even boost rubies using less costly choices. A great deal of times, honest mistakes have actually been made and also these alternatives or other gemstones such as spinel were in some cases perplexed with actual rubies. Sometimes, some deceitful people attempt to market these choices to misfortunate buyers in order to earnings. Below we will review regarding these choices and also means to determine them.

* Synthetic Diamonds

Artificial diamonds are rubies that are expanded manufactured in a lab. The initial recognized cases of diamond synthesis were asserted to be recorded between 1879 - 1928, but this was never ever confirmed. It had not been till the 1940's where research study began in the United States, Sweden, Soviet Union began investigating. Synthetic diamonds are otherwise referred to as High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) rubies or Chemical Vapor Down Payment (CVD) rubies. The name of both these synthetic rubies stems from the processes used to create them. Several of these artificial diamonds might either have better, lesser or similar features compared to that of a diamond. Therefore, these artificial rubies are used for abrasives, cutting as well as polishing tools, and also switches over in power stations.

* Simulants

Simulants are non-diamond compounds that are utilized to reproduce the look as well as the form of a diamond. One of the most fundamental and also well known simulant is cubic zirconia (CZ). CZ at simple view can glimmer more than a ruby as well as it is much less dense, indicating that a 1 carat weight CZ will certainly be a lot bigger compared to a 1 carat diamond. Nowadays, a more popular simulant is moissanite, which has all the same characteristics of a diamond. These qualities consist of firmness (Moissanite-9.25 and diamond-10 in Mohs scale), refractive index(Moissanite -2.65 as well as diamond -2.42) and also dispersion (Moissanite -.104 and ruby -.044). This makes it difficult to differentiate both at ordinary sight as well as would certainly commonly need testers to discriminate. In the following area we will certainly review ways to recognize moissanites as well as other imitations.

* Genuine or Fake?

An old method of determining diamonds is to do a scrape test. This requires scratching a ruby with one more diamond which is damaging as well as is rarely utilized nowadays. The best and most trusted means to evaluate for rubies is to make use of testers that make use of thermal conductivity. These testers contain battery powered thermistors installed with a retracting copper suggestion. This tester works by injecting the warmth into the checked stone then the gadget determines the quantity of heat that it performs. However thermal conductivity testers functions best to identify diamonds as well as its various other simulants, it will certainly not assist distinguish lab developed or synthetic rocks. To be able to identify these, certain optical methods are needed. Laboratories utilize techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy as well as luminescence in order to identify a certain rocks beginning. The average person could use loupes and microscopes to distinguish artificial rocks. All-natural diamonds typically have minor blemishes and flaws such as incorporations or some kind of foreign product, which will not be located in synthetics.

How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Pierson

How are diamond cut qualities assigned?

This is where things start to get complicated. The techniques utilized to quantitatively assess the quality of a cut vary. The means the GIA determines what a diamond's cut quality should be, as an example, differs in really particular methods from the way various other certifiers like the AGS do it. In many cases, these companies don't disclose the specific information of the processes they make use of.

The shape of a diamond likewise makes a distinction with regard to just how its cut grade is established. Although there are some standard standards that remain the exact same for any type of kind of ruby, the exact methods utilized to quality a round diamond's cut are different from those made use of to quality a heart-shaped diamond's cut.

The remainder of this explanation will concentrate on round diamonds, as this is by much one of the most typical diamond form. One of the variables affecting the cut grade of a rounded diamond is the number of elements it has. Elements are the level, specified locations on the surface area of a ruby. The aspects on round diamonds are normally triangular. Presently, it's assumed that the perfect round ruby ought to have 33 aspects on the crown (the area of the diamond that sits over the band, which itself is the best factor of the ruby) and 25 on the structure (the reduced, longer area of the diamond). When there are flaws on the surface of the ruby, cutters might include added aspects in order to obscure them. This results in a deterioration in the general top quality of the cut.

While the aspect matter is generally decideded upon as a good means of judging the top quality of a ruby cut, there are other factors on which jewelers frequently differ. A few of the various other factors utilized by some authorities to assist determine cut grades consist of the height of the ruby's crown, the depth of the structure, the diameter of the table (the top of the crown), as well as the angles of the crown as well as pavilion.

The American Criterion criteria for rounded diamonds requires a crown height of 16.2%, pavilion deepness of 43.1%, and also table diameter of 53% of the overall band diameter. The Suitable Fantastic criteria, nonetheless, asks for 19.2% crown elevation, 40% structure deepness, and 56.5% table diameter. While these distinctions could be challenging for novices to determine, they are an excellent illustration of the troubles associated with developing an easy analysis of a diamond's cut.

Although there are some disagreements regarding the precise percentages that make up the best ruby cut, for prospective diamond purchasers, the most crucial thing to comprehend is that diamond accreditations offered by companies like the AGS and also GIA are credible as well as significant. Reputable ruby suppliers base the rates at which they deal diamonds on the cut as well as the remainder of the "four Cs." When you acquire a ruby, you do not have to stress over the perception of just what makes an excellent ruby cut transforming a lot that the worth of your ruby will certainly be dramatically affected.

Which diamond cut grade stands for the very best value?

Which type of ruby is best for you largely depends on your spending plan. For buyers who agree to acquire them, suppliers generally suggest diamonds with the highest feasible cut grades. Nevertheless, this may be due to some self-involvement on their component.

The other 3 Cs have an effect on diamond prices as well, so it can be difficult to assess the specific distinction in rate in between an Ideal or Excellent cut ruby and an Excellent cut. For laid-back customers as well as budget-conscious financiers alike, rubies with a Very Great or Good cut quality can represent an excellent value. This is because, while they could be more budget-friendly than otherwise equivalent Ideal or Superb cut diamonds, the visible distinction in top quality is very little.

At the very same time, really feel complimentary to use your discretion. If, for instance, you find a diamond with an Ideal cut ranking which has great rankings in the other categories and also is still within your spending plan, then you need to certainly consider it, as long as you're dealing with a trusted supplier.

Pierson How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all vendors offer diamond grading lab records (aka ruby high quality records) to their customers. So my general recommendations to you is to maintain your cash in your pocket when managing such jewelry experts.

Only buy a ruby interaction ring if it features the initial diamond top quality report.

A laboratory report is an independent assessment of the 4Cs of a loosened diamond and consists of an outlined representation of the rock's quality attributes and also a graphic representation of the rock's percentages. Having such a record permits you to compare diamonds of various qualities and inevitably helps you make an even more informed buying choice.

A merchant might reduce edges and also not give a laboratory record or an underhanded vendor could give a phony one as a result of the moment, difficulty and cost he'll birth to obtaining a rock rated.

Yeah - there is a rate for grading a ruby (though that expense is ultimately paid by the customer), plus the delivery and insurance coverage fees for sending the diamond to the lab. And let us not forget the chance expense of a jeweler not having the diamond in his shop available for sale for a couple of weeks while the grading takes area.

Nevertheless, a diamond grading record could additionally not be offered since the expenses to obtaining one may influence also greatly on the final price of the ring. As an example, a 0.3 ct diamond ring costing $250 say, might set you back around $75 to be graded and also have the report number etched on the band on the diamond. As you look for that optimal diamond interaction ring for your sweetie, you'll find that there is an alphabet soup of labs asserting to supply reputable diamond rating records. Yet I would only put my loan on ...

The Premier Diamond Grading Lab News

Yes, all ruby high quality records are not developed equal. Within the industry, it is an agreement that the 2 leading labs are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America's Gem Trade Laboratory) and the AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Certification and Guarantee Laboratory) also supplies highly pertained to records or "ruby certificates" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the greatest international track record for independence and consistency. As a result of their constant shade and also clarity strictness standards, the world's largest and also most costly rubies have actually been sent there for grading decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for round dazzling rubies.

AGS uses the strictest cut standards in the market. It makes use of a three-dimensional light performance metric that can quality numerous ruby forms. In fact, it is the only cut grading system that is acknowledged by the clinical area.

Exactly what is more, its Ruby Top quality Paper uses a special and exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to evaluate the 4 Cs - a system which is much easier to understand than GIA's grading system. As a matter of fact, AGS also goes the extra action by relating their 0-10 score range to various other kinds of rating. For instance, the standard VS1 diamond clarity rating is a 3 on the AGS Diamond Top Quality File.

Ruby Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Ruby grading is not standardized or controlled and also therefore you may encounter rate 2 labs that employ looser standards to the rate 1 grading labs pointed out over. If you acquire a diamond that has actually been graded by a tier 2 laboratory, you could end up paying more for a lesser quality ruby. So for instance, a ruby rated a "F" in shade at a rate 2 laboratory could get a G, H, or lower shade ranking at an extra trustworthy laboratory. The industry also discounts diamonds rated by lower known laboratories by concerning 15-30% or more. So either you just purchase a diamond graded by a rate 1 lab or you approve that you might be getting a minimal quality ruby compared to what is mentioned on the record if that diamond is rated by a minimal well-known laboratory.

2. Lots of big chain shops have huge contracts with lesser known laboratories with "softer" diamond grading guidelines. A few of these softer labs put "suggested substitute values" on the laboratory records - values which are above exactly what shops means market the rubies for. So a salesperson in a store might claim to you, "Check out the good deal you are obtaining right here. We are selling you this ruby involvement ring for $2500 however the record states that the suggested replacement worth is $4000." Wow - what a bargain - NOT! This is why it is much better that you rely on just independent tier 1 labs.

Also remember that respectable diamond rating records are not appraisals and do not supply evaluation figures. Diamond evaluations are typically blatantly inflated and also are not something you'll want to rely upon.

3. Ruby reports are riddled with disclaimers that define that absolutely nothing is "certified" or guaranteed and that the laboratories are not answerable for errors. Actually, the GIA supplies a please note of sorts on their web site relating to making use of words "accredit." The web site claims:

"It is inaccurate to state that students, graduates, their businesses, or specific gems are "licensed" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not certify anyone or anything. Neither a student nor a graduate who has been awarded a certification or diploma, neither a gem which has been graded or identified by GIA has been accredited by GIA".

So it is possible that you the customer is left holding the bag needs to an error in a record is later found. Courts have frequently ruled that vendors, not labs, are accountable for such errors. Why? Since the laboratories suggested beforehand that their records could not be held responsible.

Luckily, there are a pair methods to offer yourself extra buyer defense:

A. You can fly to India where jewelry experts supply a lifetime buyback policy to their clients. Too pricey to fly?

B. You might locate one of the 20% people jewelers that sell completely bound diamonds. These are rubies that are offered with lifetime breakage, life time trade-in and also life time buyback policies.

C. Not as excellent a solution as acquiring a fully bonded diamond however you could acquire a ruby that features an actual "certification" as well as not a record. "Licensed diamonds do include guaranties" albeit for shorter durations.

Accreditation Some sellers describe a "ruby report" as a "certified ruby" yet technically this is not remedy. From a lawful standpoint, a diamond report is a simply an experienced point of view though in actuality, facets of a diamond rating record are not just viewpoints.

For instance, a diamond's carat weight (weight) can be properly determined along with its cut quality by gauging its optical efficiency or by describing a computer system design. A certification on the various other hand is a declaration of reality - a record for which the company approves legal obligation as well as will make restitution to the consumer for blunders.

Some top ruby grading laboratories provide both records as well as certificates. AGS offers Diamond Quality Documents (non-certified records) and Diamond Quality Certificates. Diamond Quality Certifications are ready solely for AGS retail jewelry experts and also uses guaranties from taking part American Gem Culture participant stores.

GCAL certifies it's diamond grading also. Its 100% money-back warranty plan stands for a period of two years from the day on the appropriate certificate. This policy makes sure the accuracy of the cut, shade as well as clearness grades as well as the carat weight.

A record or certificate should will certainly have a number on it that may or could not be inscribed on a diamond. You will have the ability to go into that number on the website of the licensing lab to examine a record's credibility.

Elements Of A Diamond Grading Record Diamond rating reports are constantly evolving however particular component needs to stay the very same. For example, the:

The Record #. This number is provided and also videotaped in a lab's record and also may or might not be etched on a diamond's girdle. You can enter the record number on a rating lab's site to check the authenticity of the ruby top quality report or to obtain even more information concerning the diamond. Forming & Aspect Style: This is the rundown as well as the reducing style used for the element setup. There are 3 standard aspect designs - "great cut, step cut as well as combined cutting style" as well as 12 fundamental shapes that include notables such as round fantastic and princess cut" diamonds.

Dimensions: This describes dimension (not weight) of a diamond. Dimension includes measurements such as size, width, weight as well as diameter. A dimension is typically listed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Measurements play a big function in exactly how a diamond shines.

Carat Weight: The weight of a diamond is measured to the hundredth of a carat and some also provide such measure to the thousandth of a carat weight (1.123 ct.). Carat weight is one of the most objective and the easiest to comprehend of the 4Cs because all one needs to do is weight the stone. Color Quality: This informs you the level of shade lack in the ruby. The less shade the higher the grade.

Rubies are typically rated from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the diamond. You should never see ruby color variety such as (G-H, I-J-K, and so forth) on a ruby report. You need to just see color ranges on assessments for rocks that are mounted.

Quality Grade: Basically every diamond has inner blemishes called additions and exterior flaws called blemishes. A ruby is graded according to the size, type, location and also amount of these defects.

Clearness grades range from Remarkable (FL) - Included. Labs make use of a couple professionals to grade the clearness of a ruby in order to create a much more exact reading.

Cut Quality: More current ruby records consist of a cut grade for conventional round great diamonds. Cut takes into factor to consider the brilliance, fire as well as scintillation of the ruby. Cut grade varies from Superb - Poor.

Other components you could come across on a ruby report include the polish, symmetry, fluorescence and also percentage. Equipped with this information, you are much better able to earn an analysis of the quality of ruby that is placed in an involvement ring.

Just how Do You Know If The Ruby Is Fake Or Actual Ruby?

Pierson

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
