Mascotte How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Not all sellers provide diamond grading lab records (aka diamond top quality reports) to their customers. So my basic advice to you is to maintain your money in your pocket when managing such jewelers.

Only acquire a ruby engagement ring if it features the original diamond top quality record.

A laboratory report is an independent examination of the 4Cs of a loosened diamond and includes a plotted layout of the stone's clarity features and also a visuals depiction of the rock's proportions. Having such a record permits you to contrast diamonds of different high qualities and also ultimately helps you make a more notified buying decision.

A store may cut edges as well as not offer a laboratory record or a deceitful seller might provide a phony one due to the time, problem and expense he'll bear to obtaining a rock graded.

Yeah - there is a rate for grading a diamond (though that cost is eventually paid by the consumer), plus the shipping and insurance coverage fees for sending out the ruby to the laboratory. As well as allow us not fail to remember the possibility cost of a jeweler not having the ruby in his shop available for sale for a few weeks while the grading occurs.

Nonetheless, a diamond grading report might additionally not be offered due to the fact that the expenses to obtaining one may influence also greatly on the final cost of the ring. For instance, a 0.3 ct ruby ring setting you back $250 say, may set you back around $75 to be rated as well as have the record number inscribed on the girdle on the diamond. As you search for that perfect ruby involvement ring for your sweetie, you'll find that there is an alphabet soup of labs claiming to provide reputable diamond grading reports. However I would only place my loan on ...

The Premier Ruby Grading Lab Information

Yes, all ruby quality records are not produced equivalent. Within the industry, it is a consensus that the 2 top labs are GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of The U.S.A.'s Gem Trade Laboratory) and the AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories).

The GCAL (Gem Accreditation and Guarantee Lab) likewise offers extremely regarded records or "ruby certifications" as they are described by GCAL. The GIA has the strongest global online reputation for independence and also uniformity. Due to their continuous color and clearness strictness guidelines, the world's largest as well as most costly diamonds have been sent out there for grading decades. In 2006, GIA-GTL included a two-dimensional cut grading system for rounded brilliant diamonds.

AGS makes use of the strictest cut criteria in the sector. It uses a three-dimensional light performance metric that could quality several diamond forms. Actually, it is the only cut grading system that is identified by the clinical area.

Just what is more, its Ruby Top quality Paper uses an one-of-a-kind and also exclusive 0 to 10 grading system to examine the 4 Cs - a system which is easier to comprehend than GIA's grading system. Actually, AGS also goes the additional step by relating their 0-10 rating scale to various other types of ranking. As an example, the standard VS1 ruby clarity ranking is a 3 on the AGS Diamond High Quality Document.

Ruby Coverage - The Drawbacks

1. Diamond grading is not standard or regulated and therefore you might encounter rate 2 labs that use looser standards to the tier 1 grading laboratories mentioned over. If you acquire a diamond that has been graded by a rate 2 laboratory, you might wind up paying a lot more for a lower high quality diamond. So for instance, a diamond ranked a "F" in shade at a tier 2 lab could get a G, H, or lower color score at a much more reputable lab. The sector likewise marks down rubies graded by lower recognized laboratories by regarding 15-30% or even more. So either you only purchase a ruby rated by a tier 1 lab or you approve that you may be acquiring a lower high quality ruby than exactly what is mentioned on the report if that diamond is rated by a lower known lab.

2. Many huge chain stores have big contracts with minimal known laboratories with "softer" ruby grading standards. Some of these softer laboratories placed "suggested replacement worths" on the laboratory records - values which are greater than just what shops means market the diamonds for. So a salesman in a chain store could claim to you, "Look at the wonderful deal you are getting below. We are marketing you this ruby engagement ring for $2500 but the record claims that the suggested replacement worth is $4000." Wow - just what a bargain - NOT! This is why it is better that you rely on only independent rate 1 labs.

Additionally keep in mind that reliable diamond rating reports are not assessments and do not offer assessment figures. Diamond appraisals are frequently grossly filled with air and are not something you'll intend to rely on.

3. Ruby reports are filled with please notes that define that nothing is "accredited" or ensured which the labs are not accountable for mistakes. As a matter of fact, the GIA supplies a please note of sorts on their site regarding making use of the word "license." The internet site states:

"It is inaccurate to state that students, grads, their organisations, or certain gems are "licensed" by GIA. The Gemological Institute of The U.S.A. does not license any person or anything. Neither a student neither a graduate that has actually been awarded a certification or diploma, neither a treasure which has actually been graded or determined by GIA has been accredited by GIA".

So it is feasible that you the customer is left holding the bag needs to an error in a record is later on discovered. Courts have regularly ruled that sellers, not laboratories, are responsible for such mistakes. Why? Due to the fact that the laboratories indicated ahead of time that their records couldn't be held accountable.

Thankfully, there are a pair means to provide yourself more purchaser protection:

A. You can fly to India where jewelers use a life time buyback plan to their clients. As well expensive to fly?

B. You can find among the 20% of US jewelry experts who offer totally bonded rubies. These are rubies that are sold with life time damage, life time trade-in and life time buyback plans.

C. Not as excellent a solution as purchasing a completely bonded diamond but you might purchase a diamond that has an actual "certificate" and not a report. "Certified rubies do include warranties" albeit for shorter periods.

Accreditation Some sellers refer to a "diamond report" as a "licensed diamond" yet technically this is not remedy. From a legal standpoint, a diamond report is a just a professional point of view though in reality, aspects of a ruby grading record are not simply point of views.

As an example, a ruby's carat (weight) could be precisely figured out as well as its cut quality by measuring its optical efficiency or by describing a computer system model. A certificate on the various other hand is a statement of reality - a file for which the provider approves lawful responsibility as well as will make restitution to the customer for errors.

Some leading ruby grading laboratories provide both reports and also certifications. AGS supplies Diamond Top quality Records (non-certified records) and Ruby Top quality Certificates. Ruby High quality Certificates are prepared specifically for AGS retail jewelers and also offers warranties from participating American Gem Society participant stores.

GCAL licenses it's diamond grading also. Its 100% money-back warranty policy is valid for a period of two years from the date on the appropriate certificate. This plan makes sure the accuracy of the cut, shade as well as clarity grades and the carat weight.

A report or certificate must will have a number on it that might or might not be engraved on a diamond. You will certainly have the ability to go into that number on the internet site of the licensing laboratory to inspect a report's credibility.

Elements Of A Ruby Grading Report Ruby rating reports are constantly evolving but certain element needs to stay the exact same. For example, the:

The Report #. This number is provided as well as tape-recorded in a laboratory's document and also could or could not be etched on a diamond's band. You could get in the record number on a rating laboratory's site to inspect the authenticity of the ruby high quality record or to obtain more information regarding the ruby. Shape & Aspect Design: This is the summary and the cutting design used for the element plan. There are 3 fundamental element styles - "brilliant cut, step cut and also mixed cutting style" and 12 fundamental shapes that include notables such as round brilliant and princess cut" rubies.

Dimensions: This refers to dimension (not weight) of a ruby. Size includes dimensions such as length, size, weight and also diameter. A measurement is commonly detailed to the hundredth of a millimeter. Dimensions play a significant role in just how a ruby glows.

Carat Weight: The weight of a ruby is determined to the hundredth of a carat and also some even supply such procedure to the thousandth of a carat weight (1.123 ct.). Carat is one of the most objective as well as the simplest to recognize of the 4Cs since all one needs to do is weight the stone. Shade Grade: This tells you the degree of shade lack in the diamond. The less shade the greater the grade.

Diamonds are typically rated from D-Z; the closer to "D" the whiter the ruby. You should never ever see ruby shade range such as (G-H, I-J-K, and more) on a diamond record. You should only see color ranges on assessments for stones that are mounted.

Clarity Quality: Virtually every diamond has actually internal imperfections called additions and also exterior flaws called acnes. A ruby is rated inning accordance with the dimension, type, location and amount of these defects.

Clarity qualities range from Remarkable (FL) - Consisted Of. Labs make use of a couple experts to quality the clearness of a ruby in order to create a more exact analysis.

Cut Grade: More recent ruby reports consist of a cut quality for typical round fantastic rubies. Cut takes right into consideration the brilliance, fire as well as scintillation of the ruby. Cut quality ranges from Exceptional - Poor.

Various other aspects you might encounter on a ruby record include the polish, symmetry, fluorescence and also percentage. Equipped with this details, you are better able to earn an assessment of the top quality of diamond that is mounted in an interaction ring.

Mascotte How to Buy a Diamond And The 4 Biggest Mistakes When Buying a Diamond

Diamonds are naturally available in a really wide range of shades. Lots of people learn about colorless diamonds and GIA's shade grading system that is used to identify a ruby's body shade ... you know D, E, F, and so on. This shade grading system is just used to identify the most usual ruby body shade of yellow nonetheless anytime a ruby is discovered in one more shade like pink, blue, environment-friendly, and so on; after that this ruby is referred to as a "" fancy diamond"".

All-natural Fancy rubies could be very expensive as well as sometimes a lot more pricey compared to a comparable size anemic ruby. An excellent example of a Fancy ruby is the well known 45.52 carat weight expensive deep blue diamond, the Hope Ruby, which is on screen in the Smithsonian Natural History Gallery in Washington, DC.

A shade boosted ruby is a 100% all-natural ruby that has had its shade changed. As well as finest of all, color enhanced rubies been available in an extremely large selection of shades at really cost effective prices!

A little bit of history- For many, lots of years it has actually been well known that a diamond's shade might be "" boosted"" by putting a little bit of colored substance on the surface area of a ruby as well as much like magic ... a ruby that had a visible yellowish color would certainly alter to an extra appealing near colorless ruby. Unfortunately, this kind of shade improved ruby could alter back to its initial body shade if this tinted compound was inadvertently removed. In more current years, the technology of shade boosted rubies has gone exceptionally advanced. It is currently feasible to entirely transform the shade of a diamond! These procedures are taken into consideration long-term because it does continue to be steady when subjected to everyday typical problems. The shade will not fade if subjected to sunlight or be washed off by harsh chemicals.

Exactly how is it done? The wanted result of any of these therapies is to have an extra valuable diamond. A less valuable ruby would be a diamond that has a reduced body shade or often a reduced quality. The shade enhanced diamond therapy business recognize if they begin off with a certain kind of ruby and also procedure it for a particular amount of time that they ought to end up with a specific color however it does not constantly function by doing this. This is a science that does call for some art in their processes ... the only procedure that gives constant outcomes is the layer procedure.

The three processes are as follows- Process # 1- HPHT Color Improved Diamonds- High Pressure/ Heat (HPHT) treatment can improve the color of particular sorts of brownish rubies and also thus raise their worth. General Electric has created a procedure that virtually is a mechanical simulation of a ruby's creation in nature. The shade enhanced diamond will certainly be heated up to a very heat under an extremely high, maintained pressure. Faults in the crystal structure are after that repositioned leading to a modification of the ruby's color. Due to the fact that the problems of HPHT are extremely just like diamond's original development, only a well outfitted lab will have the ability to positively determine this kind of color improved diamond. HPHT wased initially utilized to transform yellow-colored rubies into more valuable fancy colored boosted rubies, however currently it is additionally utilized to change some out of favor brownish diamonds right into preferred anemic colored boosted rubies.

Process # 2- Irradiated Color Improved Diamonds- OK ... do not start obtaining all delighted since you saw the word irradiated! This is a 100% risk-free procedure that is really comparable to what is used to preserve food by revealing it to a stream of Gamma rays. The color improved ruby procedure is performed in several various methods however the outcomes are all the exact same. You begin with a reduced color (P, Q, R, and so on) 100% all-natural ruby that has currently been cut and also brightened, then it is exposed to a stream of fast electrons. During this component of the process the diamond will rely on a very dark shade because several of the atoms in the diamond's crystal structure have now been dislocated and also this then has influenced the method light travel through the ruby. Next the diamond undergoes a regulated home heating (annealing) process, this permits several of those atoms to relocate (partly fixed) in order to obtain a desired shade.

Refine # 3- Layered Shade Enhanced Diamonds- The coating on refined rubies describes a slim synthetic layer that changes the shade of the ruby. The layer could either be of the preferred color or could cause a tinted interference-effect. Regrettably sometimes this procedure is done to deceive a buyer. It is a fairly simple process to perform, it has been around for several years (although the layers products are a lot better now), and it does not need a great deal of pricey high tech devices. Just recently, I've seen some pink layered rubies on the market, they are really eye-catching ... and naturally you would need to acquire them knowing that they have actually been covered and follow your jewelry expert's standards about possessing and looking after these color boosted diamonds. The finishing could be put on the whole of a diamond's surface area, simply the bottom of the ruby, or to a narrow zone near the girdle. A well-applied finish could change the shade by several shade quality. Some finishes could be gotten rid of via steaming in acid, strong cleansing options, or even house chemicals. Occasionally dots or larger areas of purple or blue ink are painted on the ruby to assist combat a yellow-colored shade. The diamond's setting will generally cover the dots, so they are challenging to see in a placed stone.

So, is a shade boosted ruby right for you? Maybe ... natural elegant color rubies can be beautiful however they are expensive! Shade enhanced diamonds are inexpensive as well as enable many individuals to have a vibrantly colored ruby. Ask your local jeweler if they have any kind of Fancy rubies ... either all-natural or shade improved diamonds. It is constantly fascinating, and also fun, to look at something different!

Under normal wear the irradiated as well as HPHT color enhanced diamonds will have no problems of the shade fading away. The only consideration will be when you need to have any type of service done on the piece of fashion jewelry. If this kind of color improved diamond is subjected to too much quantities of warmth it might influence the shade. The jewelry expert will require to understand that the diamond is a color improved ruby prior to any type of job is done and after that the jeweler will have the ability to pick the very best strategy. Shade improved diamonds are now additionally made use of as the little accent rubies around a larger anemic ruby. There are lots of exciting pieces of fashion jewelry offered with small blue, yellow, black, or environment-friendly shade boosted rubies.

Since you learn about shade enhanced rubies and also somebody attempts to sell you on exactly what they call an all-natural fancy tinted ruby yet it goes to a very bargain rate ... you will certainly recognize that something simply does not appear right about the offer. A report from a highly regarded grading laboratory should come with natural Fancy tinted diamonds that are marketed as all-natural. If you deal with a trustworthy business as well as you have been assured regarding exactly what you are buying, after that you will certainly decrease the opportunity of something bad occurring to you. Just like any scenario including a pricey purchase of something that very few people are well versed in, education and learning should be a crucial part of your strategy. This is even a lot more vital if you intend to buy a color boosted ruby. Begin With the Basics When Interested in Acquiring Diamond Jewelry.

Mascotte

In an ideal world with unlimited budgets and an infinite supply of diamonds, everyone would have beautifully cut "D Flawless" diamonds. In the real world every diamond is unique. There are plenty of gorgeous diamonds to go around - you just need to know how to find one. Choosing a diamond is about balancing several factors to make the most of your budget. Each factor contributes to the beauty and prestige of your diamond. I will explain these factors so you will be prepared to make an informed decision about your diamond purchase.

FACTOR 1: CARAT WEIGHT

People often use the word Carat when discussing how big a diamond is, however "Carat" actually refers to the weight of a diamond. There is no rule as to what carat weight you should buy, but you'll doubtless have heard that "bigger is better." If you ask me, I think bigger is great but you shouldn't forget about the other aspects of a diamond's quality.

A useful tip: if you're looking at Certified Diamonds, you may find it valuable to compare the diameters of different diamonds. Since every diamond is individually cut, some may appear larger than others of the same weight.

FACTOR 2: SHAPE

Approximately 75% of diamonds sold worldwide are Round Brilliants. Rounds diamonds are the most popular, most brilliant, and most expensive. If you are purchasing a diamond as a surprise, Round Brilliant is generally your safest bet.

There is no real hierarchy of shapes being better or worse - it is truly a matter of personal preference. Princess Cuts are the second most popular, and a classic alternative to round diamonds. Cushion Cuts are trendy and have a beautiful vintage look. If you want something different but not too crazy, try an Oval Cut, Asscher Cut, or Radiant Cut diamond.

While no shape is better, there are some significant differences between shapes. Take for example, the radiant cut vs the emerald cut. Though they are a similar shape, the extra facets of the radiant cut give it additional fire and sparkle. If you prefer the emerald cut's understated elegance, consider that it's easier to spot any imperfections and select a higher clarity grade.

Another tip: Diamonds (even round diamonds) may not be perfectly symmetrical. It's nothing to worry about if your diamond's width does not precisely match its height, but if your diamond is much longer than it is wide it may not be what you're expecting. This is especially the case in shapes like Cushion and Oval, where a more asymmetrical diamond might look "skinny", with much of the fire and brilliance concentrated at the ends.

FACTOR 3: CUT

"Cut" refers to a diamond's finish and proportions, and is critical in determining its beauty. Getting the angles right ensures a beautiful diamond that's full of life. In many cases it can be more difficult to spot flaws in a fiery, brilliant diamond. Cut is generally graded in five categories: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, and Excellent. Excellent is the highest graded awarded by GIA (whereas other labs may use terms like "ideal" or numbers like "0"). If you want to play safe, stick to "Very Good" and "Excellent" cuts when you choose your diamond.

FACTOR 4: CLARITY

Almost all diamonds have naturally¬ occurring features called "inclusions." Inclusions form as the diamond crystallizes deep underground, and they are unique to each diamond. They take many different forms, and can help you identify a diamond as your own. However, large and prominent inclusions can detract from the beauty of a diamond.

There are many different types of inclusions, and not all are created equal. If your diamond certificate has an "inclusion map," check where the inclusions are. Try to find a diamond with inclusions near the edge where they will be masked by sparkle or hidden by the setting of your diamond. If your budget is limited, I recommend buying "SI" clarity or better. "SI" stands for "Slightly Included." With close inspection you can usually spot the inclusions in an SI¬ graded diamond, but these inclusions will most likely not be visible once your diamond is set in jewellery. If you want to be sure your diamond will look "eye clean", even up close, I recommend selecting a VS2 clarity diamond or better. "VS" stands for "Very Slight Inclusion," and imperfections in VS clarity stones are rarely seen by the naked eye.

FACTOR 5: COLOUR

The term "colour" usually refers to how much warm tint is in a diamond. The scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (very strongly tinted yellow or brown). Pure white diamonds are considered more desirable, and are more expensive. Warmer¬-hued diamonds (such as K, L, and M) are not necessarily less attractive, but they are significantly less valuable.

Conventional wisdom is to select J colour or better. Personally, I love G and H colour diamonds ¬- they hit the "sweet spot" where most people will not notice colour in the diamond unless they're doing a direct comparison. However, an I or J colour diamond that is well cut and has a lot of life can give you a beautiful diamond at a bargain price.

Depending on how they are cut, different diamonds will display colour differently. This is why colour grades are assigned by looking at a diamond upside¬down. Generally, more¬ brilliant diamonds show their colour less than less brilliant diamonds.

FACTOR 6: FLUORESCENCE

Fluorescence has a bad rep, and most of it is unfair. Diamond Fluorescence refers to how a diamond responds when subjected to ultra¬violet light. Fluorescent diamonds can glow any one of several colours, but the most common is blue. In rare cases fluorescence can cause your diamond to have a milky appearance when viewed in direct daylight. This is most often the case with strong or very strong fluorescence and D/E/F colour diamonds.

However, there are many, many more cases where blue fluorescence is a positive thing. Imagine you were shining a blue light on a yellow diamond... the blue tint can make your diamond look whiter. If your diamond falls in the "near colourless," "lightly tinted," or "tinted" range I recommend looking for medium blue or faint blue fluorescence.

Warning: Green, red, and yellow fluorescence are rare, and they will not have the same benefit. If you are interested in a diamond that has strong blue, very strong blue, green, red, or yellow fluorescence, I recommend asking your salesperson to show you your diamond outside in natural daylight. If you're buying online, contact the seller prior to making your purchase so they can examine the diamond first in natural daylight.

FACTOR 7: GRADER

This should always be your first question: Says who? Every diamond grading laboratory has different standards, so comparing diamonds graded by different sources is extremely unreliable. One grader might grade a diamond K SI2, and another might call that same diamond F VS2. I know that sounds crazy, but I see it happen all the time.

The most reputable and consistent grading laboratories are GIA, AGS, IGI, and HRD. GIA is considered the global standard worldwide. AGS is a popular alternative in the U.S.A. while IGI and HRD are more common in Europe.

EGL is tricky because there are EGL labs all over the world, and some of them do a great job while others can be less reliable. We strongly recommend caution when buying an EGL certified diamond unless it's from EGL-¬USA.

Many diamonds are assigned grades by valuation companies and in-¬house graders. If your diamond does not come with a report from a major laboratory, you should always ask where the grader trained. He or she should be certified by a major grading laboratory: GIA, AGS, IGI, or HRD. Be smart and be cautious about reports done by uncertified shop owners, salespeople, or valuation companies.

SELECTING YOUR DIAMOND

You can choose to purchase your diamond online, or from a retail store. If you prefer to purchase your diamond in a retail store, avoid the big chains and shop with smaller independent jewellers. Many independent jewellers are actually significantly less expensive than their large competitors. (You don't have to take my word for it - shop around and you'll quickly learn that this is true). This way you'll buy a better quality diamond and - if you wish - you'll have the opportunity to design your own hand-made engagement ring setting.

If you choose to shop online, I would recommend comparing prices and service across several websites. Be sure that the company ships from your country - otherwise you'll be hit with expensive duty and GST. Always make sure you call or e-mail customer service and have them hand-inspect your diamond before you complete your purchase. Sometimes a diamond may seem like a great deal, but it could have an unfortunate inclusion, asymmetrical cut, or be negatively impacted by fluoresence. And above all, make sure you have an easy and affordable way to return the diamond if it doesn't turn out as you'd hoped. Online shopping is the best way to get a great deal on a diamond for your engagement ring, diamond studs, or pendant - just review this article, be reasonably cautious, and have fun.
